A charity is calling on the Government to introduce
standardised cigarette packs in the UK after a new survey suggested they
are more likely to put teenagers off smoking than current front-of-pack
health warnings.
In December last year, Australia became the first country in the world to introduce such a measure. Cigarette packs and other tobacco products are all sold in packets with a standardised brown colour, with only the brand name and graphic warnings visible.
Plans to mimic the measure in England were put on hold in July when the Government announced the proposal would be postponed until ministers had a chance to assess its impact Down Under.
New BHF research found that only a third (36%) of UK teenagers are deterred from smoking by current cigarette packs compared to almost half (48%) of their Australian counterparts.
The survey, of 2,000 people aged 13 to 18 from the UK and 500 from Australia, found that three-quarters of British teenagers would support such a measure.
The charity found that one in 10 UK teens made the incorrect assumption that certain cigarette brands are healthier than others, compared to just one in 20 Australian youngsters.
BHF chief executive Simon Gillespie said: "The message from our young people is loud and clear: current health warnings aren't up to the job and the UK Government must step up to the mark and introduce standardised packs.
"Smoking kills 100,000 people in the UK every year and we simply can't wait any longer for legislation.
"Australia has led the way on standardised packs, the Scottish Government has committed, and now the rest of the UK must act to protect future generations from a deadly habit."
The charity also called on politicians to rally behind new legislation which could see standardised packs introduced in the UK and other laws which could see larger graphic health warnings placed on cigarette packs across the European Union.
A Department of Health spokesperson said: "The UK Government supports the proposed Europe-wide controls that would introduce a ban on flavoured cigarettes and strict rules on front-of-pack health warnings.
"We take very seriously the potential for standardised packaging to reduce smoking rates, but in light of the differing views, we have decided to wait until the emerging impact of the decision in Australia can be measured, and then we will make a decision in England."

The Director of Public Prosecutions has said it was
"right" not to charge two doctors over claims that they agreed to carry
out abortions based on the sex of an unborn baby.
In an investigation by The Daily Telegraph last year, the doctors from Manchester and Birmingham were secretly filmed agreeing to a termination.
The undercover reporter had said she was pregnant with a girl and wanted an abortion because an earlier girl pregnancy had been affected by a chromosomal abnormality.
Last month Mr Starmer said he had decided against a prosecution and promised to set out his reasons after the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt called for "urgent clarification".
In a letter to the Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC he said the cases were "by no means clear cut".
He said the Abortion Act only requires two doctors to agree that the mental or physical health risks of continuing with a pregnancy would be greater than terminating it.
It would not be possible to prove that the doctors in this case had agreed to a termination on the grounds of gender alone, he said.
He added that it may be possible to show that they had failed to carry out a sufficiently robust assessment of the patient. But the evidence was not strong and there were no clinical guidelines that doctors must follow.
"There is a real risk that different juries would reach different decisions on essentially the same facts," he said.
In the wake of the Telegraph's investigation the British Medical Association issued ethical guidance for doctors.
It said it was "normally unethical to terminate a pregnancy on the grounds of foetal sex alone". But it is permissible if there are severe sex-link clinical disorders.
It also said the views of the woman about the sex of the foetus on her situation should be "carefully considered" and doctors could conclude the circumstances were so severe that they provided a legal and ethical justification for termination.
Mr Starmer warned that individual cases may merit a prosecution in future.
Both doctors have been referred to the General Medical Council and have had conditions imposed on their practice.
Mr Grieve said he was satisfied that Mr Starmer had taken the decision "properly and conscientiously".
"I understand that the question in these cases was not whether this was a gender-specific abortion, but whether the doctors made a proper, considered medical judgement," he said.

Why are the pornography and sex slave businesses dominated by Jews?

allegations as a smear campaign fueled by political rivals. Metzger and
his Sephardi counterpart, Rabbi Shlomo Amar, were elected as Israel's chief rabbis April 14 by a 150-member public committee.
Since then, however, opposition to Metzger has grown. In
the latest development, a Tel Aviv accountant filed a petition Monday
in the High Court of Justice challenging Metzger's appointment. It will
be heard by a three-judge panel. The petition claims that allegations of
fraud and other improprieties involving Metzger were not fully
investigated because of his 1998 pledge
not to stand for chief rabbi of Tel Aviv. Metzger's spokesman, Roni
Rimon, told the Israeli daily Ma'ariv that the petition was full of "lies, lies and more lies" produced by "professional slanderers.".
Metzger
had been accused of forging witnesses' signatures on marriage contracts
and unlawfully demanding payment for performing weddings, the daily
Ha'aretz reported. As a result of the allegations, Metzger's permit to
serve as a chief rabbi of a major city was revoked. However, it was
reinstated several months later after a hearing before three senior
Israeli rabbis -- including Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron, a former Sephardi
chief rabbi -- who accepted Metzger's explanations and his commitment to
leave the Tel Aviv race, the paper said.
The petition also argues that the Metzger, 50,
who previously was rabbi of north Tel Aviv, was not qualified to fill
the chief rabbi's duties as head of the country's rabbinic court system
because he never had been a religious judge or rabbi of a major city.
The petition maintained that the elections committee for the chief rabbi
was not adequately informed of the misconduct allegations against
Metzger. In related development, Ma'ariv recently published what it said
were sexual harassment allegations involving Metzger. Three weeks
before Metzger's election as chief rabbi, the paper reported, it learned
of complaints from four adult men who claimed Metzger had touched their
arms, legs and chests and expressed admiration for their muscular
physiques.

A
prominent Park Avenue rabbi had a mistress nearly half his age sign a
bizarre cohabitation contract - promising she’d get liposuction, become
better educated and continue their already hot-and-heavy sexual
relationship in exchange for half his house, the woman claims in a
bombshell lawsuit. Janet Pizzo says
she had a seven-year affair with the married Metropolitan Synagogue
Rabbi Joel Goor - which included recurring steamy sex in his rabbinical
office while he lied to his wife about his whereabouts. But
their courtship crumbled when she suspected him of having another
girlfriend, and he’s since become vindictive. She even caught him on
audio tape threatening to prance around their Bronx home naked in front of her 17-year-old daughter.
“You’ve got to move,” Goor says, according to an audio tape reviewed by The Post. “This is my house . . . I’m allowed to walk around nude in my house. So you better tell [her daughter] Mary,” Goor told Pizzo. “I’m allowed to walk round this house . . . and I’m going to.”. Goor’s lawyer declined to comment on the allegations.

woman of her home and for failing to report that he was a sex offender
when he applied for his notary public. Brauner was released on $85,000 bail…”
Another article reports “The most ‘far-flung and exotic fugitive investigation ever conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service’ ended early Sunday with convicted child molester Alan Horowitz in custody on U.S. soil. Alan Horowitz was convicted in 1991 on 34 counts of child molestation. Officers from the U.S. Marshals service arrested the 60-year-old at Newark Liberty International Airport after a 15-hour flight from New Delhi, India. The ordained Orthodox rabbi and former child psychologist was arrested on May 22 at a seaside resort… He is being held at a correctional facility in New Jersey and will appear before an extradition judge on July 16th before being taken to New York to face a parole violation charge there. He also faces a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.”

Yehuda Kolko was arrested in New York City following a long-term
investigation, police said.He was charged with four counts of sexual
abuse, including two felony counts, and endangering the welfare of a
child. The alleged victim was in the first grade during the 2002-03 school year." May 5, 2006 Rabbi Yudi Kolko and Yeshiva Torah Temimah were hit with a $20 million civil lawsuit accusing him of molesting two students more than 25 years ago.One of the alleged victims said Rabbi Yehuda Kolko, 60, sexually assaulted him when he was a seventh-grade student. September 12, 2007 — Rabbi Yehuda Kolko was re-arrested on
new charges for allegedly molesting another boy at at Yeshiva Torah
Temimah. Rabbi Kolko’s wife was able to raise the bail to $50,000 bond, $25,000 cash within the hour and he was released in time to pray at evening Rosh Hashanah services. April 2, 2008 – Another civil suit is filed against Rabbi Yehuda Kolko and Yeshiva Torah Temimah. The latest case involves the alleged sexual abuse of a minor, identified as John Doe No. 6, was enrolled at the school when they were between the ages of 11 and 13.

rabbi and his religious school are being sued by two men who claim they
were sexually abused as children more than a quarter-century ago. One man, identified as John Doe No. 1, says Rabbi Yehuda Kolko, 60, molested him when he was in the seventh-grade at Yeshiva-Mesivta Torah Temimah in Brooklyn in the 1970s, the Daily News reported. The man, now 48,
said at a news conference that Kolko had him sit on his lap while the
rabbi was driving him to school and also abused him at a summer camp. The second man says he was molested 10 years later when he was a seventh grader. Jeffrey
Herman, a Miami lawyer representing John Doe No. 1, accuses the school
of protecting the rabbi by intimidating boys who had been abused.
Kolko cannot face criminal charges under New York law because of a three-year statute of limitations.

A Brooklyn rabbi and his yeshiva were hit with a $20 million civil lawsuit yesterday, accusing him of molesting two students more than 25 years ago. One of the alleged victims said Rabbi Yehuda Kolko, 60, sexually assaulted him when he was a seventh-grade student attending Yeshiva-Mesivta Torah Temimah, an Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn, religious school. "It happened in his car on the way to school and at recess during summer camp," the 48-year-old man said at a press conference. The plaintiff, identified by his Miami lawyer, Jeffrey Herman, only as John Doe No. 1, was allegedly molested during the early 1970s over a two-year period, Herman said. The alleged victim charges that Kolko had
instructed him to sit on his lap and hold the steering wheel while they
were in Kolko's car on the way to school as the rabbi molested him. Herman, who claims there are at least 15 victims, charges
that school officials waged a campaign of intimidation and concealment
against victims and their families to bury the accusations against the
rabbi. School officials could not be reached for comment. kolko, who lives in Midwood in a red-brick house on E. 22nd St., could not be reached for comment. The other plaintiff, who was not present, was identified as a 38-year-old man who was allegedly sexually abused when he was also a seventh-grader in the 1980s. Authorities said Sunday that Stanley Z. Levitt was charged with indecent assault and battery on a child. The 64-year-old Levitt is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Suffolk Superior Court. Levitt was arraigned last year on four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child. Prosecutors say he assaulted two boys about 11 years old who attended the Maimonides School in Brookline where he taught between 1974 and 1977.
Prosecutors say the third person approached them after reading media
accounts. Authorities say he also was a sixth grader at the school that
employed Levitt in the mid-1970s.

SYDNEY, Australia (JTA) – A sex scandal at a fervently Orthodox Jewish school in Melbourne has sparked a furious debate in Australia’s Jewish community. Malka Leifer, the Israeli-born principal of the fervently Orthodox Adass Israel Girls’ School, was accused on the front page of last week’s Australian Jewish News of sexual abuse , setting off a media storm in Australia.
The
story also sparked a blistering war of words within the Jewish
community about whether the newspaper should have aired the community’s
dirty laundry in public. Under the headline “Adass principal flees Australia in disgrace,” the newspaper reported last week that Leifer fled the country on March 5 – 24 hours after the school board confronted her with allegations of sexual misconduct involving former students. Leifer denied the allegations, according to the president of the Adass Israel synagogue, Binyomin Koppel.
In a statement, Koppel confirmed that Leifer, the principal for five years, was “suspended from all school duties” and had left the country on the evening of March 5. A
mother of eight in her late 40s, Leifer is believed to have gone to her
parents’ home in the fervently Orthodox enclave of Bnei Brak, a Tel
Aviv suburb.
At
least three alleged victims, recent graduates who became teachers at
the school, are believed to have come forward to counselors with
allegations of misconduct by Leifer. There are about 1,200 members
of the Adass Israel community, an insular community of fervently
Orthodox Jews, many of whose primarly language is Yiddish.
In the wake of the scandal, Adass Israel has hired psychologists to counsel the school’s 250 students as well as staff, teachers and former students. Meanwhile, a furious debate has raged over whether the newspaper should have reported the salacious story.
One
letter-writer whose missive was published in this week’s edition of the
Australian Jewish News called for a boycott of the newspaper for the “shame and humiliation rendered on Melbourne Jewry.”
A second accused the weekly of “tabloid-like behavior” that was “disgraceful and outrageous.” The
editor, another wrote, should be “reprimanded by the owners” for
“transgressing the laws of lashon hara” – the ban on gossip. Letter writers also came to the paper’s defense. One said the paper did its job “with sensitivity and compassion,” and that it had an “obligation” to publish the allegations because “our children need to be protected.”.
In a strongly worded editorial, the newspaper argued that it was “nonsense” to suggest that it should have refrained from publishing the news. “That
there could be an alleged sexual predator in one of our schools will
not make our friends think any worse of us, nor will it breed a new
generation of anti-Semites,” the editorial argued. “It simply proves again that our community, like any, has its flaws.”
The fury surrounding publication of the story recalled a similar controversy several years ago in the United States, when The New York Jewish Week published allegations of sexual abuse by Baruch Lanner, a rabbi who worked in the Orthodox Union’s youth movement. Lanner was later convicted of sexual abuse and sentenced to seven years in prison. In
Australia, the story about Adass Israel spread quickly on the internet,
on radio talk shows and in the Australian press, which ran with
headlines like “Principal ‘molested schoolgirls,’ ” and “Fury over girls school sex claims.”.
The Adass community has been traumatized by the scandal. “The mere allegation has gone to the very core of the Torah principles, ethos and practices of that whole community,” said Norman Rosenbaum, an attorney for the school and brother of Yankel Rosenbaum, the yeshiva student who was murdered during New York’s 1991 Crown Heights riots. “It is devastating. This has shattered people.”

Francis Mission, on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, in South Dakota.
Recently, Father Clarence Vavra, now of Minnesota, has confessed to
abusing boys while at St. Francis in 1975, according to Ken Bear Chief, a
paralegal and investigator with Tamaki Law Firm, in Washington State.

bill in the South Dakota legislature that appears intended to give
several dozen Native American childhood-sexual-abuse plaintiffs their
day in court may do just the opposite. According to several legislators,
Senate Bill 130 is supposed to fix problems caused by a 2010 law that
retroactively blocked the Native lawsuits against the Catholic Church,
which ran the boarding schools where the abuse allegedly took place.
However, others claim the new proposal makes matters worse by reinstating the statute of limitations in effect “on the date the abuse occurred,” according to the bill’s language. For the plaintiffs in question, that was the mid-20th century, when the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse shut the courthouse door three years after the abuse, or one year after the victim turned 18—a birthday that’s long past for them.
SB 130’s final sentence slams the door and locks it, according to attorney Michael Shubeck, of the Law Offices of Gregory Yates, in Rapid City; he and Yates have Native clients whose cases were terminated under the 2010 law. Shubeck noted that in a kind of circular logic, this part of the bill says that if a legislative action (like the 2010 law) killed valid cases, SB 130 would revive them.
But, said Shubeck, the short mid-20th-century statute of limitations that SB 130 puts into play means the lawsuits can never be valid. End of story.
Dr. Barbara Charbonneau-Dahlen read SB 130’s draft language and was also concerned. Charbonneau-Dahlen is Chippewa and filed a suit alleging abuse at St. Paul’s Indian Mission School, in Marty, South Dakota. She e-mailed the South Dakota Legislative Research Council, which had written the bill, saying, “If SB 130 stays as is, we would go back to the 1960 rule, and we would again be denied our day in court.”
Charbonneau-Dahlen contends the bill should be rewritten to make the applicable statute of limitations the one in effect when a lawsuit was filed. For her and other Native plaintiffs, that would be the longer time span South Dakota legislated in 1996, since all their suits were filed after that date. A nursing PhD and scholar, Charbonneau-Dahlen called the 1960s understanding of the psychology of childhood sexual abuse, and the shorter time frame that accompanied it, “antiquated.”
A state official who was close to the situation but authorized to speak only on background, insisted that the draft version of SB 130 did not reinstate the restrictive 1960s statute of limitations, though he said the bill could have been better written. He added that it might be kinder to advise the plaintiffs to forget about their lawsuits.
