Lesbian Couple Celebrate The Birth Of Twin Boys After Using Sperm From Gay Donor
Lesbian couple celebrate the birth of twin boys after using free sperm from a gay donor who advertises his services on Facebook. Rebecca and Vikki Lomax found licensed sperm clinic too expensive. They Found Kenzie Kilpatrick’s Facebook page advertising his services for free. He has tried to help 50 women and fathered 10 babies by nine of them. Rebecca gave birth in May to twins Samuel and Alfie thanks to Kilpatrick.
Rebecca and Vikki Lomax always wanted children after their white wedding in October 2013.
However, they found the cost of using sperm from a licensed clinic too expensive at around £1,500 a go.
Then they hit across Kenzie Kilpatrick, 26, who had set up a Facebook page to advertise his services for free. Demand for Mr Kilpatrick’s sperm has been so great he has tried to help 50 women with the result of fathering ten babies by nine of them. Six of the nine have given birth producing two girls and five boys – including the set of twins for the Lomaxes. Three more babies are said to be on the way. But Mr Kilpatrick, a former carer from Birmingham, was criticised by a local charity Kids Need Both Parents who claimed he had opened himself up to potential problems by donating directly to couples instead of via a licensed clinic.
Happy parents Rebecca, a janitor, and Vikki, a bar worker, however, have nothing but praise for their donor – and say they are hoping he will help them have another child.
Vikki, 23, said: ‘Going on Facebook might be an unusual way of having kids. But we’re not ashamed of how we got our lovely family. Kenzie’s generosity has changed our lives.’
Rebecca, 27, who gave birth to the little boys, added: ‘Having our twin sons is a dream come true.’
The couple, from Bolton, said they didn’t think having a family would be possible after they met in 2011. Vikki said: ‘Families and friends weren’t shocked when we came out as gay … But I think both our mothers felt sad we might not make them grandparents.’
The pair could not afford the cost of using a licensed clinic but then Rebecca stumbled on Mr Kilpatrick’s website, Drama Free UK Sperm donors.
She said: ‘On it there were men advertising their sperm and women who were looking for sperm donors. Originally we began talking to another man but Kenzie was so helpful – he said if we had any worries to go to him and he would help. He was so kind we decided we wanted him to donate his sperm and thankfully he was happy to oblige.’ In September last year the women travelled to Birmingham, staying in a hotel where they met Mr Kilpatrick. The three signed a contract stating Mr Kilpatrick will not have any access to any baby and the couple would not ask him for any money to help bring them up. Mr Kilpatrick also told them he did not have any health issues and had been tested for sexually-transmitted diseases.
Vikki said: ‘Kenzie provided four sample pots over the weekend and each time Rebecca artificially inseminated herself.’ To their delight two weeks later Rebecca discovered she was pregnant.
Rebecca said: ‘There is a history of twins in my family. But we were still shocked and thrilled when at the routine 12-week scan we found it was twins.’
On May 16, the babies were delivered by C-section. Samuel, weighing 6lb 12oz, was delivered first followed a minute later by brother Alfie, 6lb 4.5oz.
Vikki said: ‘They were perfect and we celebrated by sending Kenzie a photo of them on Facebook.’
The twins have not met their father but the Lomaxes say they will be honest with the children about how they were conceived. ‘We are happy this was not an anonymous donation and Kenzie is happy our sons know he is their biological parent. But other than that he won’t have anything to do with their upbringing.’
Mr Kilpatrick has now decided to end his days as a sperm donor – although he will provide donations to women he’s already helped so they can have siblings. He recently said he is not attached to the babies he has fathered. ‘I have helped people make a family, you can’t beat that feeling,’ he said.
WHAT THE LAW SAYS…
Medical experts have warned that unlicensed sperm donors could create a ‘ticking timebomb’. Official guidelines limit the number of families that legitimate donors can help create to a maximum of ten.
But couples who use an unlicensed donor risk his children potentially living close to each other, meaning half-brothers and sisters may meet and unwittingly have children of their own. Under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008, Kenzie Kilpatrick has no legal obligation to provide for the Lomaxes children because they are in a civil partnership. They are officially the twins’ two parents.
Cara Nuttall, of law firm Slater and Gordon, said: ‘If the couple weren’t civil partners and this was not through a clinic, he would be considered the legal father.’
