She was admitted to the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles six weeks ago suffering from congestive heart failure.
She died surrounded by her children, her publicist Sally Morrison said.
Liz first gained stardom as a child and appeared in more than 50 films. She won Oscars for her performances in Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
She was equally famous for her extraordinary beauty and her stormy personal life, including eight marriages and a series of physical ailments.
Despite numerous health scares over a number of years the actress, notably married to Richard Burton on two occasions, continually fought back.
Dame Elizabeth was also noted for a lengthy and close friendship with the singer Michael Jackson who died in June 2009. He accompanied to a gala tribute evening at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2000.
