execution by cannon

Human beings have long showed remarkable ingenuity at getting rid of their fellow human beings, especially perhaps human beings that they do not like. Once the cannon was invented it was only a matter of time before someone tied a prisoner to the front and lit a fuse, blowing his body into a constellation of pain, the head dropping neatly in front. There are reports of ‘blown from gun’ or ‘blown from cannon’ all over the world, from Iran to Brazil and from Central Asia to the Caribbean. However, there is no question that the natural home of this form of punishment was India. The punishment was used, meanwhile, longest in Afghanistan, just to the north of the Raj. The following passage dates to 1842 though cannons would be used to dispatch prisoners until the 1930s in that rather terrifying area of central Asia.

A little before sunset the horse artillery guns were drawn out, and presently the three criminals were brought to the ground [of killing]… the three men were then tied with ropes to the guns, their backs against the muzzle. The rope, fastened to one the spokes of the wheel, passed round the arms, over the muzzle of the gun, round the other arm, and then to the spoke of the opposite wheel, which kept the body fixed. The prisoners, with their wrists tied together, crying incessantly, ‘There is no God but God, and Mahomet is the prophet of God!’ Just as everything was ready, the prisoner in the middle was let loose, having been pardoned by the Schah [a day to remember], and the noise made the other two turn their heads. At that instant the priming fired, and an explosion took place. I could only see the body nearest to me for the thick clouds of smoke. One arm and shoulder blade was driven perpendicularly upwards, at least 100 feet; the other arm and part of the body were found right forward, yards off, with the hand torn away. The explosion produced a shower of blood and small particles of flesh. On going to the gun I found the head separate, as if it had been purposely severed from the body, and lying between the wheels; close to it were the lower limbs, trunkless, upturned on the ground, with part of the intestines twisted round one leg.

There are accounts from Afghanistan of kites haunting the killing sites to actually claim body parts as they sailed into the air: another description has a western diplomat injured by a flying limb. Why though was being blown by cannon so terrible: if Beach was given a choice between the electric chair and a large gun, he’d strap himself to the barrel in his enthusiasm to avoid old sparky? Much of the horror comes down perhaps to the disintegration of the body, that is particularly resented by Muslims and Christians (particularly Catholics)… There was presumably a lot of cleaning up to do as well. The British writer who described the acts here had no doubts that gentlemen did not blow even the worst criminals from cannons: ‘the… description of  execution will serve to illustrate the barbarous character of the people into whose power our countrymen, and some of our countrywomen, have unhappily fallen’, i.e. the Afghans.

 http://www.strangehistory.net/2015/05/05/execution-by-cannon/

Yet the British themselves later used cannons for executions, particularly martial executions where native soldiers (Beach has found no example of British troops blowing British troops from the canon) had mutinied. The most important took place at the time of the Indian Mutiny (1857) where Indian soldiers who had risen in revolt were routinely blown from the cannon. There is at least one case where a British officer excused this action by saying (General Chamberlain, 35 Regiment) that he killed two of his men thus out of respect for their Brahman status: ‘I wished to save them from the pollution of the hangman’s touch’. There is also at least one case (Nurgoond 1858) where an Indian requested the cannon but was refused it by British officials. However, the suspicion is that this was the most ghastly death the British had at their disposal and it was done as an act of revenge against natives who had carried out or who had planned atrocities on British civilians (including blowing from the cannon). It would be interesting to trace its place in martial law: or was this just an improvised ‘judicial’ act?

These British acts in India are seen as atrocities as well of course, by Indian nationalists and professors of colonialism. The cannon punishment was introduced by Europeans and only taken up unwillingly by the locals… But does this stand up, in the least, to historical scrutiny? In the two centuries before the mutiny most records Beach has found have Indian princes, not Europeans use the punishment. In 1790/91, for example, one Captain Rutledge, a British subject, was blown to pieces by a cannon on the instructions of Tipu Sultan. Of course, Europeans may have introduced the idea. The very earliest record of execution by cannon dated to 1509 and Portuguese tactics of intimidation in Sri Lanka. But cannons had arrived in Europe from the east where they had been around since the thirteenth century, including India. It is quite possible that inventive Muslim despots in the north had already been taking apart their criminal class with cannon balls before European ships arrived off Madras. Can anyone drag execution by cannon back into pre-colonial times in India or elsewhere? Drbeachcombing AT yahoo DOT com

Three afterthoughts. First, the Wikipedia page on this is fabulous, a real credit to its writer: are we seeing a slow change in the quality of Wikipedia? Second, it could be argued that the last instance of blown by cannon dates not to Afghanistan in the 1930s but to North Korea in 2012 when the Great Leader’s vice minister of war was dispatched with a carefully aimed mortar round: Christ… Third, how is it possible that after several decades of study and writing Beach only today learnt that ‘cannon’ is spelt with two ns?

25 may 2015: Séb J writes in to point out that we are now killing people with anti-aircraft guns. Now guess which country they’d do that in…

Subject: Mad British Colonialist Legacy. The Hidden Tears of Punjab, by ANDRE VLTCHEK

A lane, a narrow passage to Jallianwala Bagh Garden inside the old city of Amritsar, in the state of Punjab. It is a monument now, one of the testaments to madness and crimes committed by the British Empire during its colonial reign over Sub-Continent.
This is where, on April 13 1919, thousands of people gathered, demanding release of two of their detained leaders, Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifuddin. It was right before the day of Baisakhi, the main Sikh festival, and the pilgrims came to the city, in multitudes, from all corners of Punjab.
The British Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer brought fifty Gurkha riflemen to a raised bank, and then ordered them to shoot at the crowd.
Bipan Chandra, an Indian historian, wrote in his iconic work, “India’s Struggle for Independence”:
“On the orders of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, the army fired on the crowd for ten minutes, directing their bullets largely towards the few open gates through which people were trying to run out. The figures released by the British government were 370 dead and 1200 wounded. Other sources place the number dead at well over 1000.”
While reading through the draft of this essay, my friend and comrade, renowned Canadian international lawyer Christopher Black, added:
“… At the investigation into the Amritsar massacre, General Dyer said his only regret was that he had not killed more people. He also used armoured cars to block the entrances and machine guns were also used on the crowd. After that the British made people in the streets crawl on the stomachs when they passed a British officer. Terrible, terrible things-and what the British did in Kenya in the 50’s is worse than what the Nazis did in Europe.”
Jallianwala Bagh is now a monument, a testament, a warning. There are bullet holes clearly marked in white, penetrating the walls of surrounding buildings. There is a well, where bodies of countless victims had fallen. Some people had chosen to jump, to escape the bullets.
There is a museum, containing historic documents: statements of defiance and spite from the officials of British Raj, as well as declarations of several maverick Indian figures, including Rabindranath Tagore, one of the greatest writers of India, who threw his knighthood back in the face of the British oppressors, after he learned about the massacre.
There are old black and white photos of Punjabi people tied to the polls, their buttocks exposed, being flagged by shorts-wearing British soldiers, who were apparently enjoying their heinous acts.
There is also a statement of General Dyer himself. It is chilling, arrogant and unapologetic statement:
“I fired and continued to fire until the crowd dispersed, and I consider this is the least amount of firing which would produce the necessary moral and widespread effect it was my duty to produce if I was to justify my action. If more troops had been at hand the casualties would have been greater in proportion. It was no longer a question of merely dispersing the crowd, but one of producing a sufficient moral effect from a military point of view not only on those who were present, but more especially throughout the Punjab. There could be no question of undue severity.”
Not everyone in India is outraged by former crimes of the British Empire. Some want to forget and to “move on”, especially those closely linked to the establishment; to the new corporate and pro-Western India, where education is being privatized, mass media controlled by big business interests, and progressive ideologies buried under unsavory layers of greed.
At the grounds of Jallianwala Bagh, Anand P. Mishra, Professor at O. P. Jindal Global University, Haryana, spreads his arms:
“This happened almost 100 years ago and I don’t hold any grudges towards British, anymore.”
But when I approach Ms. Garima Sahata, a Punjabi student, she does not hide her feelings towards the British Empire and the West:
“I feel ager, thinking what they had done to our people. I think it is important for us to come here and to see the remnants of the massacre. I still feel angry towards the British people, even now… but in a different way… They are not killing us the same way, as they used to in the past, but they are killing us nevertheless.”
***
The British Empire was actually based on enforcing full submission and obedience on its local subjects, in all corners of the world; it was based on fear and terror, on disinformation, propaganda, supremacist concepts, and on shameless collaboration of the local “elites”. “Law and order” was maintained by using torture and extra-judiciary executions, “divide and rule” strategies, and by building countless prisons and concentration camps.
To kill 1.000 or more “niggers,” to borrow from the colorful, racist dictionary of Lloyd George, who was serving as British Prime Minister between 1916 and 1922, was never something that Western empires would feel ashamed of. For centuries, the British Kingdom was murdering merrily, all over Africa and the Middle East, as well as in the Punjab, Kerala, Gujarat, in fact all over the Sub-Continent. In London the acts of smashing unruly nations were considered as something “normal”, even praiseworthy. Commanders in charge of slaughtering thousands of people in the colonies were promoted, not demoted, and their statues have been decorating countless squares and government buildings.
The British Empire has been above the law. All rights to punish “locals” were reserved. But British citizens were almost never punished for their horrendous crimes committed in foreign lands.
When the Nazis grabbed power in Germany, they immediately began enjoying a dedicating following from the elites in the United Kingdom. It is because British colonialism and German Nazism were in essence not too different from each other.
Today’s Western Empire is clearly following its predecessor. Not much has changed. Technology improved, that is about all.
***
Standing at the monument of colonial carnage in Punjab, I recalled dozens of horrific crimes of the British Empire, committed all over the world:
I thought about those concentration camps in Africa, and about the stations where slaves who were first hunted down like animals were shackled and beaten, then put on boats and forced to undergo voyages to the “new world” – voyages that most of them never managed to survive. I thought about murder, torture, flogging, raping women and men, destruction of entire countries, tribes and families. It is all connected: colonialism, present-day riots in Baltimore, horrid ruins of Africa.
In Kenya, near Voi, I was shown a British prison for resistance cadres, which was surrounded by wilderness and dangerous animals. This is where the leaders of local rebellions were jailed, tortured and exterminated.
In Uganda, I was told stories about how British colonizers used to humiliate local people and break their pride: in the villages, they would hunt down the tallest and the strongest man; they would shackled him, beat him up, and then the British officer would rape him, sodomize him in public, so there would be no doubts left of who was in charge.
In the Middle East, people still remember those savage chemical bombings of the “locals”, the extermination of entire tribes. Winston Churchill made it clear, on several occasions: “I do not understand the squeamishness about the use of gas,” he told the House of Commons during an address in the autumn of 1937. “I am strongly in favour of using poisonous gas against uncivilised tribes.”
In Malaya, I was told, as the Japanese were approaching, British soldiers were chaining locals to the cannons, forcing them to fight and die.
The Brits triggered countless famines all over India, killing dozens of millions. To them, Indian people were not humans. When Churchill was begged to send food to Bengal that was ravished by famine in 1943, he replied that it was their own fault for “breeding like rabbits” and that the plague was “merrily” culling the population. At least 3 million died.
Wherever the British Empire, or any other European empire, grabbed control over the territory – in Africa, Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia, in Sub-Continent, Oceania – horror and brutality reigned.
***
V. Arun Kumar, MPhil in International Organization and researcher at Jawaharlal Nehru University, expressed his feelings regarding Partition, doubtlessly one more terrible result of the British “divide and rule” policy:
“India and Pakistan, two children born out of the same mother’s womb have today reached at a juncture where no mother would bear. From their birth and to more than sixty years down the history, India and Pakistan has gained the label of archenemies. These two countries have fought numerous wars over a narrow thread that divides them – which they call as border. State machinery on the both sides has constructed massive hatred-mongering propaganda programs, which ensure constant creation of fear psychosis in the minds of people against the other. Even when two countries are not in actual war, they are always in a state of war. A visit to Wagah border between India and Pakistan, one can see the mockery of peace, when soldiers on the both side perform a war like aggressive drill manoeuvre while opening the gates at the border. And the sea of people on both sides enthusiastically claps shouting abusive slogans on the other country- forgetting that they are abusing their own siblings.”
Beautifully said, and so true!
Only 30 kilometers from Amritsar, one of the most grotesque events on earth takes place: “Lowering of the Flag” on the Indian/Pakistani border. Here, what is often described as the perfectly choreographed expression of hate, takes place in front of thousands of visitors from both countries.
Wagah Border has even tribunes built to accommodate aggressive spectators. It goes everyday like this:
“Death to Pakistan! Long Live India!”
“Death to India!
Long live Pakistan!”
“Hindustaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan Zindabad!!!!!!” They shout here, “Long Live India!!!!” and those endless spasms are immediately followed by barks glorifying India and insulting Pakistan. And vice versa.
Border guards, male and female, are then performing short marches, at a tremendously aggressive and fast pace, towards the border gate. The public, sick from the murderous heat and the fascist, nationalist idiocy, speeches and shouts, is roaring.
As I am made to sit on the pavement, right next to the border gate of Wagah, squeezed between two corpulent women wearing sweat-soaked saris, flies are buzzing all over my cameras. Here I feel hate being omnipresent: there is hate expressed by the Indian crowd towards Pakistan, hate of the border guards towards its own unruly crowd, even hate of the crowd towards me, a daring foreigner who came, most likely, to poke fun at this insane martial ceremony.
The issue is so explosive, that my friends from nearby Lahore conveniently “forgot” to supply me with their quote. Few people in New Delhi “forgot” as well.
***
Now, Punjab is split, because that old “divide and rule” scheme was applied here meticulously, as it was almost everywhere at the Sub-Continent.
The British never really left: they live in the minds of the Indian elites.
Punjab suffered terribly during the Partition, and later, too, from brutality of the Indian state. In fact, almost entire India is now suffering, unable to shake off those racist, religious and social prejudices.
Delhi behaves like a colonialist master in Kashmir (where it is committing one of the most brutal genocides on earth), the Northeast and in several other areas. Indian elites are almost as ruthless and barbaric as were the British colonizers; the faces changed, but the power system remained almost intact.
It goes without saying that the Indian elites, disciples and admirers of the British Raj, are treating its own people with similar spite and cruelty.
***
The seeds sown by the British Raj have been inherited by several successive states of the Sub-Continent. They are now growing, blooming into a tremendous toxic and murderous insanity. Instead of turning against the homicidal elites, the poor majority is yelling nationalist slogans.
Everything here is deeply connected: the colonial torture, the post-colonial genocides, the prostitution of the local elites, who are offering themselves to the Western rulers of the world, the over-militarization, the institutionalized spite for the poor and for the lower castes and classes.
Confusion is omnipresent. Words and terminology have lost their meanings. Dust, injustice, pain and insecurity are everywhere.
Anyone who claims that colonialism is dead is either a liar or a madman.
And if this – the direct result of colonialism – is “democracy”, then we should all, immediately, take a bus in the opposite direction!

VANCOUVER, BC – In this moving interview with Alfred Lambremont Webre, Rev. Kevin Annett, Secretary of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State - www.itccs.org - details the recent roles of the Tribunal and its Common Law Courts of Justice leading to the historic resignation of Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) and the serving of arrest warrants on Pope Francis I for personal involvement in child trafficking and other crimes. Kevin Annett characterizes Pope Francis I Jesuit “humility and poverty” profile as damage control by a criminal organization. He also discusses common law justice courts starting up in England and the USA.

VANCOUVER, BC - In an interview from Spain with Joshua JD Lemmens of Radio Warrior.ca and Alfred Lambremont Webre of ExopoliticsTV, Kevin Annett, field secretary of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State gave a wide-ranging update on the first two weeks of the Brussels trial before the International Common Law Court of Justice of Pope Jorge Bergoglio, Jesuit Superior General Adolfo Pachon and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. As part of the Prosecutor's corroborating evidence, secret archives from the Jesuit Order were introduced into the Court record that describe in detail the so-called “Magisterial Privilege” compelling the participation of every new Pope in the Ninth Circle sacrifice of new born children.

During the first week of the Brussels trial, The Chief Prosecutor told the Court, “These archives clearly indicate a premeditated plan for centuries by the Jesuits to ritually murder kidnapped newborn babies and then consume their blood, born of a twisted notion of deriving spiritual power from the lifeblood of the innocent and thereby assuring the political stability of the Papacy in Rome. Every Pope was expected to and did in fact participate in these monstrous rituals ... These acts are not only genocidal but systemic and institutionalized in nature, and indict the Roman Catholic Church and the Jesuits as a whole, and every Pope since at least in the year 1773.”

The same collection of Jesuit archival records make reference to a child sacrificial cult known as The Knights of Darkness, established by the Nazi Waffen S.S. Division in 1933 with Jesuit backing. The archives identify former Pope Benedict, Joseph Ratzinger, as a member of the Knights and as an S.S. Chaplain's assistant at the Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany, where he participated in sacrificial rites using children transported to the camp or kidnapped from political prisoners.

The latter practice was a common Jesuit undertaking in Spain, Argentina and other fascist regimes, and one implicating chief defendant Jorge Bergoglio while he was a priest, Bishop and front man for the military junta in Argentina during the 1970's.

Commencing on Tuesday, April 8 after an opening Court session the day before, the case by the Citizen Prosecutor's Office presented evidence directly linking all three chief defendants with the planning and execution of child trafficking networks within the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, and with the practice and concealment of the ritual rape, torture and killing of children.

Along with considerable documentation, the Prosecutor introduced notarized affidavit statements from eight eyewitnesses to these crimes, including videotaped interviews with two adolescent women who claim to have been tortured and raped by chief defendant Jorge Bergoglio, alias “Pope Francis”, during the spring of 2009 and 2010, at horrific cult functions connected to the “Ninth Circle” child sacrifice network.

“Survivors of these rituals describe newborn babies being chopped to pieces on stone altars, and their remains were then consumed by the participants” described the Chief Prosecutor to the Court.

“The survivors during the 1960's period were forced to rape and mutilate other children, and then cut their throats with ceremonial daggers. Former Pope Benedict, Joseph Ratzinger, Dutch Cardinal Alfrink, and Prince Bernhard were among the cult participants, according to these survivors. But significantly, the more recent incidents in 2009 and 2010 involved exactly the same kinds of ritualized murder of newborn infants in rural Holland and Belgium."

Other witnesses described their personal knowledge of efforts by the defendants to conceal the involvement of not only the Catholic and Anglican church, but the British, Belgian and Dutch royal families, in the ritual killing of Mohawk Indian children at the Brantford residential school in Ontario, Canada.

These killings span over seventy years and include the period between 1942 and 1945 when exiled Dutch Queen Wilhemina and her family lived in Canada, and participated in Ninth Circle rituals at the Mohawk Indian school.

Introduced documentation* indicates that, to assist and conceal such involvement of Dutch “royals” in these cult killings, the Canadian government and Privy Council Office in London granted “extra-territorial exemption” to the Dutch royals from all criminal, civil and military jurisdiction while in Canada.      (* The Canada Gazette , Issue No. 232, December 26, 1942, Ottawa)

Dutch and Belgian royal participants in the rape and killing of Mohawk children and newborns included Bilderberger founder Crown Prince Bernhard and King Hendrick, consort to Queen Wilhelmina of Holland.

Brussels EU Parlament Candidate Statement

Brussels candidate for the EU Parliamentary elections on May 25, 2014 Melanie Vritshan stated, "Natural and Customary Law allows for the establishment of popular courts of justice when the existing legal and governmental authorities are subverting the law and justice, or aiding those who do. Common Law arose historically to uphold the liberties of the people against tyranny, whether religious or secular, and accordingly, has universal jurisdiction when convened as a jury court by more than twelve duly sworn men and women.

"The International Common Law Court of Justice (ICLCJ) was established as the legal and judicial arm of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and state (ITCCS), with the help of legal experts, judges and survivors of church terror and imperial genocide in more than a dozen countries."

Why Isn’t Canada Taking Action to Find More Than 1,000 Missing Aboriginal Women?

Why Isn’t Canada Taking Action to Find More Than 1,000 Missing Aboriginal Women?

Over the last few weeks we’ve heard an international amber alert to bring back the nearly 300 Nigerian girls who were recently abducted by a notoriously violent "Islamic" militant group from their school dormitories.
To imagine little girls being brutally kidnapped "simply for their desire to get an education" is a horror to imagine, yet here we are. As the world holds out hope that these young women will be brought home safely, I ask that you add another group of women to your thoughts and prayers: Canada’s aboriginal women.
A recent report from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has found reports of more than 1,000 missing or murdered aboriginal women in the country. Eighty-seven percent of these women are mothers. “If you put it into context, it means that over the last 30 years, 40 aboriginal women and girls didn’t — every year — did not come home to see their families,” said New Democratic Party status of women critic Niki Ashton.

Despite cries for a national government inquiry, the government has been uncooperative and instead offered to conduct another study regarding the missing women. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said, “Our government from the very outset has said, as one of its priorities — one of its most important priorities — tackling crime including violence against women and girls.”
If that were true in practice, the government would be taking real action to find justice for these women, not conducting another study that will inevitably show how many aboriginal women have been endangered.
In Nigeria the government has also been slow to provide any support to finding the missing girls. There are even reports linking the First Lady of Nigeria to the arrest of Naomi Mutah Nyadar, the leader of the #BringBackOurGirls protests.
Despite government inaction, the global call to bring these girls safely home has been tremendous, especially on social media platforms like Twitter where the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls has been trending for the last two weeks.
But where is the international outcry for Canada’s aboriginal women? Where’s the clever hashtag spotlighting the issue online for all to see?
It might pull at your heart strings more to imagine young girls being kidnapped from school, but imagine all the young girls in Canada who are now motherless due to this horrific injustice. Canada’s missing and murdered women and mothers will not be dismissed or forgotten here.
Whether it be school girls in Nigeria or aboriginal women in Canada the message for both is the same: girls and women aren’t valued.
In order for there to be any real protections for women and girls in Canada, Nigeria, or anywhere in the world for that matter, we need to first understand why women are so vulnerable to violence and then break down the societal beliefs that make it impossible for women to be seen as equals. Until then women and girls will continue to be the targets of violence, and governments won’t feel the urgency to find justice for its victims.
You can help the aboriginal women of Canada by signing our petition demanding that the government conduct a national inquiry on the matter.
