Bab'Aziz (2005) | The Prince That Contemplated His Soul | Dolby® TrueHD Bab'Aziz - The Prince That Contemplated His Soul (2005)
A visual poem of incomparable beauty, this masterpiece from director Nacer Khemir (Wanderers of the Desert) begins with the story of a blind dervish named Bab’Aziz and his spirited granddaughter, Ishtar.
Together they wander the desert in search of a great reunion of dervishes that takes place just once every thirty years.
With faith as their only guide, the two journey for days through the expansive, barren landscape. To keep Ishtar entertained, Bab’Aziz relays the ancient tale of a prince who relinquished his realm in order to remain next to a small pool in the desert, staring into its depths while contemplating his soul.
As the tale of the prince unfolds, the two encounter other travelers with stories of their own – including Osman, who longs for the beautiful woman he met at the bottom of a well, and Zaid, who searches for the ravishing young woman who fled from him after being seduced by his songs.
Filled with breathtaking images and wonderful music, Nacer Khemir has created a fairytale-like story of longing and belonging, filmed in the enchanting and ever-shifting sandscapes of Tunisia and Iran. Director Nacer Khemir’s past cinematic achievements include his award-winning features Les Baliseurs du Désert (Wanderers of the Desert ), awarded Grand Prix of the Festival des Trois Continents in 1984, and Le Collier Perdu de la Colombe (The Dove’s Lost Necklace ), which won the Special Jury Prize at Locarno in 1991.
The script was written by Nacer Khemir with the participation of screenwriter Tonino Guerra (Amarcord, Night of the Shooting Stars, Blowup and L’Avventura).

Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi Balkhi was a 13th century Muslim Sufi saint. After so many centuries his message of Love is being rediscovered and spread by people around the world. Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi Balkhi or as commonly known as Rumi has written a few books among them is his famous Masnavi in Persian language. His main theme in his books are Love of Allah(god), which made him love humanity, nature and everything good. In his burning in the flame of love he has written many poems and couplets. The Love of Allah was ignited in his heart by his spiritual teacher(Murshid/ Shaikh) Shams e Tabrizi who took Rumi as his only student(seeker/ salik) throughout his life. To this day Rumi's spiritual tradition continues known as Mevlavi Spiritual Order of Islamic Sufism( similar to Naqshbandia, Qadriya, Chistia, Soharwardia, Naqshbandiah Owaisiah spiritual orders), they are also known as whirling dervishes. Rumi's message is of Love, which people need the most in these days. There is great wisdom in his poetry and his message of Love is for all.

One of the 20th century’s most prolific scholars of Islamic mysticism, (Sufism) Henry Corbin (1903-1978) was Professor of Islam & Islamic Philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the University of Tehran. (Iran)
Corbin’s central project was to provide a framework for understanding the unity of the religions of the Book: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. His great work: “Alone with the Alone: Creative Imagination in the Sufism of Ibn Arabi “is a classic initiatory text of visionary spirituality that transcends the tragic divisions among the three great monotheisms.
Corbin’s life was devoted to the struggle to free the religious imagination from fundamentalisms of every kind.
Mystic, philosopher, poet, sage, Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi is one of the world's great spiritual teachers.
Ibn 'Arabi was born in Murcia, Spain in 1165 and his writings had an immense impact throughout the Islamic world and beyond. The universal ideas underlying his thought are of immediate relevance today. Please visit: Ibnarabisociety.org Music: Armand Amar

Shaikh Kabir Helminski is a Sufi master of the 700 year old Mevlevi order, the lineage of Jalaluddin Rumi. Sufism (tasawwuf) is the inner, spiritual, mystical dimension of Islam. Its aim is the development of Presence and Love. Its method is the practice of dhikr, the remembrance of God with every breath.
