Mohammad Rafi (Urdu: محمد رفیع; 24 December 1924 -- 31 July 1980), was an North Indian playback singer whose career spanned four decades.[1]

He won a National Award and 6 Filmfare Awards. In 1967, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India.[2]

In a career spanning about 40 years, Rafi sang over 26,000 film songs.[3]

His songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans, and from slow melancholic tunes to fast and melodious fun filled songs. He had a strong command of Hindi and Urdu and a powerful range that could accommodate this variety.[4]

He sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Konkani, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, Maghi, Maithili and Assamese. He also recorded a few English, Persian, Spanish and Dutch songs.An article in Times of India, published on 24 July 2010 sums up his voice as, "If there are 101 ways of saying "I love you" in a song, Mohammed Rafi knew them all. The awkwardness of puppy love, the friskiness of teen romance, the philosophy of unrequited love and the anguish of heartbreak - he could explore every crevice of ardour. It wasn't just love, his voice could capture the navras of life - a failed poet's melancholy, a fiery unionist's vim, a debt-ridden farmer's despair, really anybody at all. Rafi, whose career spanned nearly four decades, was a singer for every season and every reason."[5]

I love and listen to songs since my childhood up to my 70th year on this Earth - in English, French, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Bosnian, etc. But, I spend all my nights listening to Hindustani (Urdu and Hindi) songs of OLD (not modern!) and I never found more beautiful and soul moving songs than these old gems. And without diminishing the merits of other singers, both male and female, Muhammad Rafi stands out and is unique.

As Lata Mangeshkar said once, Rafi is God-gifted. But, instead of sharing this to the world, the Hindustani modernists have adopted the Western way of popular culture. Old Indian films were bad enough although with exceptional poetry, music, lyrics and voices, but modern songs are FAKE and do not move souls anymore as Indian humanity has lost its soul as the rest of the world!

I will die listening to OLD Hindustani songs although I understand only a few words. This one song comes straight from a Heavenly Paradise although I do not believe in the one taught and promised by some religions.

There could have been two reasons for the taking of Rafi's breath. 1. Female singers normally have a long breath than males. This has been apparent from various songs' duets. 2. Rafi wanted a variey as in the 2nd alaap he tooka breath before the last part, while in 3rd he took it even just after the middle. 3. Surraya was a more establshed & senior singer at that time. Rafi never had breath problem, otherwise he could never have sung 'O'Duniya key rakhwaley' which is one of the most difficult1

WHEN RAFI SAHAAB SAT SINGING ON THE FOOT-PATH OF BANDRA!

We all know about the golden voice of Mohammed Rafi Sahaab (1924-1980) who was the most versatile playback singer of the Hindi screen. Among the thousands of his songs of various genres, there are also many heart-rending numbers that convey the plight of the poor. In fact, these songs have kept alive the memory of those movies which otherwise would have long been foregotten.

That Rafi Sahaab had a golden heart as well is also generally acknowledged and there are countless stories of how he helped the people in financial distress or how he doled out money for charity. Incredulous as it may sound, here’s another story by an eye-witness, one Jaffer Wali, who has written about seeing Mohammed Rafi singing on the footpath to raise money for charity. Jaffer Wali was a Std.V kid at that time. Based on his information, I am hereby presenting an abridged version in my own words:

Rafi Sahaab never used to miss his Friday prayers which he offered in the BaRee Masjid at Bandra. Once, after the Friday prayers, Rafi sahaab as usual walked past the famous Lucky Restaurant down to the petrol-pump to hail a taxi for home. There he was accosted by three persons of the Sikh community. They told him that they had come from the Guru Nanak Charity Clinic which was located on the Station Road, Bandra. They needed some donation immediately. Now, right on the road, Rafi Sahaab had nothing with him. Even the coins that he used to carry in his handkerchief while leaving for prayers had already been distributed to the wayside needy people. What was he to do? The enterprising Rafi Sahaab didn’t lose his heart. He took the Sardars along with him towards the Riyaz Restaurant on the Station Road where old KabbaRi shops existed. There, from one of the shops he borrowed a harmonium. Notwithstanding his immaculate white churidar pajama, white kurta and a white skull-cap he sat down on the footpath under the shade of a tree. For about 15 minutes he played the harmonium, fine-tuning it. By this time a large crowd had gathered. Then Rafi Sahaab began to sing to the immense pleasure of the crowd. He sang three songs. After each song he would ask the listeners to donate generously in the name of Allah. The people in the crowd willingly gave what they had in their pockets. Soon coins and currency notes were piled up before him. He asked for a sack and the money thus collected was put in the sack. Then Rafi Sahaab handed over the entire half-full sack of money to the three Sardars who were stunned by Rafi Sahaab’s humility as well as his helpful and resourceful nature. They thanked him profusely and happily departed from the scene. That’s it!

While on the subject, it would be appropriate to list some of the songs that have come to be termed as “the Beggars’ Delight”. These songs were commonly sung by beggars and street urchins who begged for money on the streets of Mumbai and in the local trains. Since those songs were popular, the beggars did a brisk business. I especially remember the Vachan’s number, O babu O babu O jaane waale babu ek paisa dede… that was popular for decades together. One of the songs even talk about the plight of the Rich. I call these songs as Rich Man-Poor Man Rafi’s Tributes”.
