'Bad news for our enemies': EU launches defence pact

European Council President Donald Tusk deemed the move "bad news for our enemies". First blocked by the French parliament in the 1950s and later by Britain, which feared creation of an EU army, the pact aims to end the squandering of billions of euros by splintered defence policies. It is also aimed at lowering Europe's heavy reliance on the United States. "More than half a century ago, an ambitious vision of the European Defence Community was created but what was missing was the unity and courage to put it into practice," Tusk, who chairs EU summits, said of the failed 1950s attempt. "The dream was at odds with reality. Today this dream becomes reality," he said in a speech in front of EU leaders and military personnel from each of the 25 countries involved. Denmark, which has an opt out from EU defence matters, and Malta, were the only EU countries not to sign up, along with Brexiting Britain. French President Emmanuel Macron, whose election victory in May gave new impetus to efforts to revive defence cooperation after Britons voted in 2016 to leave the bloc, hailed "concrete progress." Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the pact would make the EU more agile abroad and would support NATO. The pact, called Permanent Structured Cooperation, or PESCO, is meant as a show of unity and a tangible step in EU integration, diplomats said, particularly after Britain's decision to leave. Caught off guard by Russia's Crimea annexation in 2014 and facing threats ranging from state-sponsored computer hackers to militant attacks, EU governments say the pact is justified by EU surveys showing most citizens want the bloc to provide security. EU governments proved unable to act as a group in the 1990s Balkan wars and relied on U.S.-led NATO to stop the bloodshed on their doorstep. In Libya in 2011, a Franco-British air campaign ran out of munitions and equipment and was again forced to turn to the United States, in what is considered an enduring embarrassment for the EU, a major economic power. U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of low European defence spending, a host of divisions on foreign policy, and Trump's warnings to allies that they could no longer rely on the United States if they did not pay up, have also played a role.
"It's sad that we needed Donald Trump to give us a boost, but whatever, it is the right outcome," said former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer, who as minister backed NATO's intervention in Kosovo in 1999 but opposed the 2003 Iraq war. BRITISH INTEREST Unlike past attempts at European defence integration, NATO backs the project, but NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who attended part of the summit, warned against duplication. Twenty-two EU countries are also members of NATO. "There has to be coherence between the capability developments of NATO and the European Union. We cannot risk ending up with conflicting requirements from the EU and from NATO to the same nations," he told reporters. "Forces and capabilities developed under EU initiatives also have to be available for NATO because we only have one set of forces," Stoltenberg said. Issues remain about financing future EU missions. An EU defence fund, with money from the European Commission for the first time, still needs to be approved, although a pilot phase is already underway for defence research. In one irony noted by EU diplomats, British Prime Minister Theresa May, who attended the summit, was left seeking a way into the project now that it was an actuality. A 1998 Anglo-French EU defence accord is considered the genesis of Thursday's agreement. In a possible compromise on PESCO, Britain may be able to join in later on, but only on an exceptional basis if it provides funds and expertise. Britain and France, both nuclear-armed, are Europe's two biggest military powers, and in 2010 set up a Combined Joint Expeditionary Force to cement long-standing ties in defence. "We do face a number of threats across Europe," May said. "I'm very clear that although the British people took a sovereign decision to leave the EU, that does not mean that we were going to be leaving our responsibilities in terms of European security," she told reporters.

A good amount of E-mail and even some old fashioned 'Snail-mail' flows into the inboxes of TomatoBubble.com & The Anti-New York Times. We don't always have a chance to respond, but we do read and reflect upon every single incoming message. In addition to the fan mail (and the vicious hate mail -- which we also enjoy!) interesting items pertaining to news and history also come in. Much of it is news to us and greatly appreciated. But there is also no lack of hoaxes and falsely attributed quotes floating around the alternative news community.
One day, a reader called our attention to a sentence which he claimed appeared in the New York Slimes back in 1914. It was said to be from an obituary for a prominent, make that extremely prominent, Zionist leader namedDavid Wolfsohn(sometimes spelled Wolffsohn). The brief write-up closed with this stunning statement of admission:
"... he (David Wolfsohn) pleaded for greater unity among the Jews and said that eventually they must conquer the world." (emphasis added)
Though such a sentiment would not be surprising, the idea that the Slimes would publish such a claim did not seem credible. This was not going to be shared with our readers until we could verify it 100%. So, Sugar the Cat, my trusted feline sidekick with a nose for research, was dispatched into The Times Machine Archive(a service that is paid for each month from the donations of readers -- hint, hint). Lo and behold -- look what the cat sniffed out and brought back from page 9 of the September 17, 1914 issue:

It is interesting to note that in the very same issue of the Slimes; propaganda cheap shots, aimed at Turkey (often referred to as "the sick man of Europe"), were already being launched. The Zionists already had it in mind to eventually drag the U.S. into the war so that the struggling British could still win the war and then steal Palestine for the Zionists. The development of the modern nation states throughout the Arab
world is a fascinating and heartbreaking process. 100 years ago, most
Arabs were part of the Ottoman Empire/Caliphate, a large multi-ethnic
state based in Istanbul. Today, a political map of the Arab world looks
like a very complex jigsaw puzzle. A complex and intricate course of
events in the 1910s brought about the end of the Ottomans and the rise
of these new nations with borders running across the Middle East, diving
Muslims from each other. While there are many different factors leading
to this, the role that the British played in this was far greater than
any other player in the region. Three separate agreements made
conflicting promises that the British had to stand by. The result was a
political mess that divided up a large part of the Muslim world.
The Outbreak of World War I
In the summer of 1914, war broke out in Europe. A complex system of
alliances, a militaristic arms race, colonial ambitions, and general
mismanagement at the highest government levels led to this devastating
war that would claim the lives of 12 million people from 1914 to 1918.
On the “Allied” side stood the empires of Britain, France, and Russia.
The “Central” powers consisted of Germany and Austria-Hungary.
The Ottoman Empire in 1914 at the start of the war
At first, the Ottoman Empire decided to remain neutral. They were not
nearly as strong as any of the other nations fighting in the war, and
were wracked by internal and external threats. The Ottoman sultan/caliph
was nothing more than a figurehead at this point, with the last powerful sultan, Abdulhamid II,
having been overthrown in 1908 and replaced with a military government
led by the “Three Pashas”. They were from the secular Westernized group,
the Young Turks. Financially, the Ottomans were in a serious bind,
owing huge debts to the European powers that they were not able to pay.
After trying to join the Allied side and being rejected, the Ottomans
sided with the Central Powers in October of 1914. The British immediately began to conceive of plans to dissolve the
Ottoman Empire and expand their Middle Eastern empire. They had already
had control of Egypt since 1888 and India since 1857. The Ottoman Middle
East lay right in the middle of these two important colonies, and the
British were determined to exterminate it as part of the world war.
The Arab Revolt
One of the British strategies was to turn the Ottoman Empire’s Arab
subjects against the government. They found a ready and willing helper
in the Hejaz, the western region of the Arabian Peninsula. Sharif
Hussein bin Ali, the amir (governor) of Makkah entered into an agreement
with the British government to revolt against the Ottomans.
His reasons for allying with the foreign British against other Muslims
remains uncertain. Possible reasons for his revolt were:
disapproval with the Turkish nationalist objectives of the Three Pashas,
a personal feud with the Ottoman government, or simply a desire for his
own kingdom. Whatever his reasons were, Sharif Hussein decided to revolt against
the Ottoman government in alliance with the British. In return, the
British promised to provide money and weapons to the rebels to help them
fight the much more organized Ottoman army. Also, the British promised
him that after the war, he would be given his own Arab kingdom that
would cover the entire Arabian Peninsula, including Syria and Iraq. The
letters in which the two sides negotiated and discussed revolt were
known as the McMahon-Hussein Correspondence, as Sharif Hussein was
communicating with the British High Commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry
McMahon.

In June of 1916 Sharif Hussein led his group of
armed Bedouin warriors from the Hejaz in an armed campaign against the
Ottomans. Within a few months, the Arab rebels managed to capture
numerous cities in the Hejaz (including Jeddah and Makkah) with help
from the British army and navy. The British provided support in the form
of soldiers, weapons, money, advisors (including the “legendary”
Lawrence of Arabia), and a flag. The British in Egypt drew up a flag for
the Arabs to use in battle, which was known as the “Flag of the Arab
Revolt”. This flag would later become the model for other Arab flags of
countries such as Jordan, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Kuwait. As World War One progressed through 1917 and 1918, the Arab rebels
managed to capture some major cities from the Ottomans. As the British
advanced into Palestine and Iraq, capturing cities such as Jerusalem and
Baghdad, the Arabs aided them by capturing Amman and Aqaba. It is
important to note that the Arab Revolt did not have the backing of a large majority of the Arab population.
It was a minority movement of a couple thousand tribesmen led by a few
leaders who sought to increase their own powers. The vast majority of
the Arab people stayed away from the conflict and did not support the
rebels or the Ottoman government. Sharif Hussein’s plan to create his
own Arab kingdom was succeeding so far, if it were not for other
promises the British would make.
The Sykes-Picot Agreement

Before the Arab Revolt could even begin and before Sharif Hussein
could create his Arab kingdom, the British and French had other plans.
In the winter of 1915-1916, two diplomats, Sir Mark Sykes of Britain and
François Georges-Picot of France secretly met to decide the fate of the
post-Ottoman Arab world. According to what would become known as the Sykes-Picot Agreement,
the British and French agreed to divide up the Arab world between
themselves. The British were to take control of what is now Iraq,
Kuwait, and Jordan. The French were given modern Syria, Lebanon,
and southern Turkey. The status of Palestine was to be determined
later, with Zionist ambitions to be taken into account. The zones of
control that the British and French were given allowed for some amount
of Arab self-rule in some areas, albeit with European control over such
Arab kingdoms. In other areas, the British and French were promised
total control. Although it was meant to be a secret agreement for a post-WWI Middle
East, the agreement became known publicly in 1917 when the Russian
Bolshevik government exposed it. The Sykes-Picot Agreement
directly contradicted the promises the British made to Sherif Hussein
and caused a considerable amount of tension between the British and
Arabs. However, this would not be the last of the conflicting agreements
the British would make.
The Balfour Declaration
Another group that wanted a say in the political landscape of the
Middle East were the Zionists. Zionism is a political movement that
calls for the establishment of a Jewish state in the Holy Land of
Palestine. It began in the 1800s as a movement that sought to find a
homeland away from Europe for Jews (most of which lived in Germany,
Poland, and Russia).
Arthur Balfour and the original Balfour Declaration
Eventually the Zionists decided to pressure the British government
during WWI into allowing them to settle in Palestine after the war was
over. Within the British government, there were many who were
sympathetic to this political movement. One of those was Arthur Balfour,
the Foreign Secretary for Britain. On November 2nd, 1917, he sent a
letter to Baron Rothschild, a leader in the Zionist community. The
letter declared the British government’s official support for the
Zionist movement’s goals to establish a Jewish state in Palestine:
“His Majesty’s government view with favour the
establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and
will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this
object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may
prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish
communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by
Jews in any other country.”
Three Conflicting Agreements
By 1917, the British had made three different agreements with three
different groups promising three different political futures for the
Arab world. The Arabs insisted they still get their Arab kingdom that
was promised to them through Sharif Hussein. The French (and British
themselves) expected to divide up that same land among themselves. And
the Zionists expected to be given Palestine as promised by Balfour. In 1918 the war ended with the victory of the Allies and the complete
destruction of the Ottoman Empire. Although the Ottomans existed in
name until 1922 (and the caliphate existed in name until 1924), all the
former Ottoman land was now under European occupation. The war was over,
but the Middle East’s future was still in dispute between three
different sides.
The mandates that the League of Nations created after WWI
Which side won? None fully got what they wanted. In the aftermath of
WWI, the League of Nations (a forerunner to the United Nations) was
established. One of its jobs was to divide up the conquered Ottoman
lands. It drew up “mandates” for the Arab world. Each mandate was
supposed to be ruled by the British or French “until such time as they
are able to stand alone.” The League was the one to draw up the borders
we see on modern political maps of the Middle East. The borders were
drawn without regard for the wishes of the people living there, or along
ethnic, geographic, or religious boundaries – they were truly
arbitrary. It is important to note that even today, political borders in
the Middle East do not indicate different groups of people. The
differences between Iraqis, Syrians, Jordanians, etc. were entirely
created by the European colonizers as a method of dividing the Arabs
against each other. Through the mandate system, the British and the French were able to
get the control they wanted over the Middle East. For Sharif Hussein,
his sons were allowed to rule over these mandates under British
“protection”. Prince Faisal was made king of Iraq and Syria and Prince
Abdullah was made king of Jordan. In practice, however, the British and
French had real authority over these areas. For the Zionists, they were allowed by the British government to
settle in Palestine, although with limitations. The British did not want
to anger the Arabs already living in Palestine, so they tried to limit
the number of Jews allowed to migrate to Palestine. This angered the
Zionists, who looked for illegal ways to immigrate throughout the
1920s-1940s, as well as the Arabs, who saw the immigration as
encroachment on land that had been theirs since Salah al-Din liberated it in 1187. The political mess that Britain created in the aftermath of WWI
remains today. The competing agreements and the subsequent countries
that were created to disunite Muslims from each other led to political
instability throughout the Middle East. The rise of Zionism coupled with
the disunity of the Muslims in that region has led to corrupt
governments and economic decline for the Middle East as a whole. The
divisions that the British instituted in the Muslim world remain strong
today, despite being wholly created within the past 100 years.

The Man Behind The Curtain: Israeli Colonel Among ISIS Forces In Iraq

This was definitely not
supposed to happen. It seems that an Israeli military man with the rank
of colonel was “caught with IS pants down.” By that I mean he was
captured amid a gaggle of so-called IS – or Islamic State or ISIS or
DAESH depending on your preference – terrorists, by soldiers of the
Iraqi army. Under interrogation by the Iraqi intelligence he apparently
said a lot regarding the role of Netanyahu’s IDF in supporting IS.
In late October an Iranian news agency,
quoting a senior Iraqi intelligence officer, reported the capture of an
Israeli army colonel, named Yusi Oulen Shahak, reportedly related to the
ISIS Golani Battalion operating in Iraq in the Salahuddin front. In a
statement to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency a Commander of the
Iraqi Army stated, “The security and popular forces have held captive an
Israeli colonel.” He added that the IDF colonel “had participated in
the Takfiri ISIL group’s terrorist operations.” He said the colonel was
arrested together with a number of ISIL or IS terrorists, giving the
details: “The Israeli colonel’s name is Yusi Oulen Shahak and is ranked
colonel in Golani Brigade… with the security and military code of Re34356578765az231434.”
Comment:The news of this capture went further:
… that the relevant bodies are now
interrogating the Israeli colonel to understand the reasons behind his
fighting alongside the ISIL forces and the presence of other Zionist
officers among ISIL terrorists.
The Iraqi security forces said the captured colonel has already made shocking confessions.
Several ISIL militants arrested
in the last one year had already confessed that Israeli agents from
Mossad and other Israeli espionage and intelligence bodies were present
in the first wave of ISIL attacks on Iraq and capture of Mosul in Summer
2014, but no ranking Israeli agent had been arrested.
Political and military experts told FNA
that the capture of the Israeli colonel will leave a grave impact on
Iraq’s war strategy, including partnership with Israeli allies.
Why Israel?
Ever since the beginning of Russia’s
very effective IS bombing of select targets in Syria on September 30,
details of the very dirty role of not only Washington, but also NATO
member Turkey under President Erdogan, Qatar and other states has come
into the sunlight for the first time.
It’s becoming increasingly clear that at
least a faction in the Obama Administration has played a very dirty
behind-the-scenes role in supporting IS in order to advance the removal
of Syrian President Bashar al Assad and pave the way for what inevitably
would be a Libya-style chaos and destruction which would make the
present Syrian refugee crisis in Europe a mere warmup by comparison.
The “pro-IS faction” in Washington
includes the so-called neo-conservatives centered around disgraced
former CIA head and executioner of the Iraqi “surge” General David
Petraeus. It also includes US General John R. Allen, who since September
2014 had served as President Obama’s Special Presidential Envoy for the
Global Coalition to Counter ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant)
and, until she resigned in February 2013, it included Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton.
Significantly, General John Allen, an
unceasing advocate of a US-led “No Fly Zone” inside Syria along the
border to Turkey, something President Obama refused, was relieved of his
post on 23 October, 2015. That was shortly after launch of the
highly-effective Russian strikes on Syrian IS and Al Qaeda’s Al Nusra
Front terrorist sites changed the entire situation in the geopolitical
picture of Syria and the entire Middle East.
UN Reports cites Israel
That Netanyahu’s Likud and the Israeli
military work closely with Washington’s neo-conservative war-hawks is
well-established, as is the vehement opposition of Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu to Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran. Israel regards the
Iranian-backed Shi’a Islamist militant group, Hezbollah, based in
Lebanon, as arch foe. Hezbollah has been actively fighting alongside the
Syrian Army against ISIS in Syria. General Allen’s strategy of
“bombings of ISIS” since he was placed in charge of the operation in
September 2014, as Russia’s Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov have
repeatedly pointed out, far from destroying ISIS in Syria, had vastly
expanded their territorial control of the country. Now it becomes clear that that was precisely the intent of Allen and the Washington war faction.
Since at least 2013 Israeli military
have also openly bombed what they claim were Hezbollah targets inside
Syria. Investigation revealed that in fact Israel was hitting Syrian
military and Hezbollah targets who are valiantly fighting against ISIS
and other terrorists. De facto thereby Israel was actually helping ISIS, like General John Allen’s year-long “anti-ISIS” bombings.
That a faction in the Pentagon has
secretly worked behind-the-scenes to train, arm and finance what today
is called ISIS or IS in Syria is now a matter of open record. In August
2012, a Pentagon document classified “Secret,” later declassified under
pressure of the US NGO Judicial Watch, detailed precisely the emergence
of what became the Islamic State or ISIS emerging from the Islamic State
in Iraq, then an Al Qaeda affiliate.
The Pentagon document stated:
“…there
is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist
Principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly
what the supporting powers to the opposition [to Assad-w.e.] want, in
order to isolate the Syrian regime, which is considered the strategic
depth of the Shia expansion (Iraq and Iran).”
The supporting powers to the
opposition in 2012 then included Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the USA
and behind-the-scenes, Netanyahu’s Israel.
Precisely this creation of a “Salafist
Principality in eastern Syria,” today’s territory of ISIL or IS, was the
agenda of Petraeus, General Allen and others in Washington to destroy
Assad. It’s what put the Obama Administration at loggerhead with Russia,
China and Iran over the bizarre US demand Assad must first go before
ISIS can be destroyed. Now the game is in the open for the world to see
Washington’s duplicity in backing what the Russian’s accurately call
“moderate terrorists” against a duly-elected Assad. That Israel is also
in the midst of this rats’ nest of opposition terrorist forces in Syria
was confirmed in a recent UN report.
What the report did not mention was why
Israeli IDF military would have such a passionate interest in Syria,
especially Syria’s Golan Heights.
Why Israel wants Assad Out
In December, 2014 the Jerusalem Post
in Israel reported the findings of a largely ignored, and politically
explosive report detailing UN sightings of Israeli military together
with ISIS terrorist combatants. The UN peacekeeping force, UN
Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), stationed since 1974 along the
Golan Heights border between Syria and Israel, revealed that Israel had
been working closely with Syrian opposition terrorists, including Al
Qaeda’s Al Nusra Front and IS in the Golan Heights, and “kept close
contact over the past 18 months.” The report was submitted to the UN Security Council. Mainstream media in the US and West buried the explosive findings.
The UN documents showed that the Israeli
Defense Forces (IDF) were maintaining regular contact with members of
the so-called Islamic State since May of 2013. The IDF stated that this
was only for medical care for civilians, but the deception was
broken when the UNDOF observers identified direct contact between IDF
forces and ISIS soldiers, including giving medical care to ISIS
fighters. Observations even included the transfer of two crates from the
IDF to ISIS forces, the contents of which have not been confirmed.
Further the UN report identified what the Syrians label a “crossing
point of forces between Israel and ISIS,” a point of concern UNDOF
brought before the UN Security Council.
The UNDOF was created by a May, 1974 UN
Security Council Resolution No. 350 in the wake of tensions from the
October 1973 Yom Kippur War between Syria and Israel. It established a
buffer zone between Israel and Syria’s Golan Heights according to the
1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement, to be governed and policed by
the Syrian authorities. No military forces other than UNDOF are
permitted within it. Today it has 1,200 observers.
Since 2013 and the escalation of Israeli
attacks on Syria along the Golan Heights, claiming pursuit of
“Hezbollah terrorists,” the UNDOF itself has been subject to massive
attacks by ISIS or Al Qaeda’s Al Nusra Front terrorists in the Golan
Heights for the first time since 1974, of kidnappings, of killings, of
theft of UN weapons and ammunition, vehicles and other assets, and the
looting and destruction of facilities. Someone obviously does not want UNDOF to remain policing the Golan Heights.
Israel and Golan Heights Oil
In his November 9 White House meeting
with US President Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu asked
Washington to reconsider the fact that since the 1967 Six-Days’ War
between Israel and the Arab countries, Israel has illegally occupied a
significant part of the Golan Heights. In their meeting, Netanyahu,
apparently without success, called on Obama to back formal Israeli
annexation of the illegally-occupied Golan Heights, claiming that the
absence of a functioning Syrian government “allows for different
thinking” concerning the future status of the strategically important area.
Of course Netanyahu did not address in
any honest way how Israeli IDF and other forces had been responsible for
the absence of a functioning Syrian government by their support for
ISIS and Al Nusra Front of Al Qaeda.
In 2013, when UNDOF began to document
increasing contact between Israeli military and IS and Al Qaeda along
the Golan Heights, a little-known Newark, New Jersey oil company, Genie
Energy, with an Israeli daughter company, Afek Oil & Gas, began also
moving into Golan Heights with permission of the Netanyahu government
to explore for oil. That same year Israeli military engineers overhauled
the forty-five mile border fence with Syria, replacing it with a steel
barricade that included barbed wire, touch sensors, motion detectors,
infrared cameras, and ground radar, putting it on par with the Wall
Israel has constructed in the West Bank.
Interestingly enough, on October 8,
Yuval Bartov, chief geologist from Genie Energy’s Israeli subsidiary,
Afek Oil & Gas, told Israel’s Channel 2 TV that his company had
found a major oil reservoir on the Golan Heights: “We’ve found an oil
stratum 350 meters thick in the southern Golan Heights. On average
worldwide, strata are 20 to 30 meters thick, and this is 10 times as
large as that, so we are talking about significant quantities.” As
I noted in an earlier article, the International Advisory Board of
Genie Energy includes such notorious names as Dick Cheney, former CIA
head and infamous neo-con James Woolsey, Jacob Lord Rothschild and others.
Of course no reasonable person in their
right mind would suggest there might be a link between Israeli military
dealings with the ISIS and other anti-Assad terrorists in Syria,
especially in the Golan Heights, and the oil find of Genie Energy in the
same place, and with Netanyahu’s latest Golan Heights “rethink” appeal
to Obama. That would smell too much like “conspiracy theory” and all
reasonable people know conspiracies don’t exist, only coincidences. Or?
In fact, to paraphrase the immortal words of Brad Pitt in the role of
West Virginia First Lieutenant Aldo Raine in the final scene of
Tarantino’s brilliant film, Inglorious Basterds, it seems that ‘Ol
Netanyahu and his pecker-suckin pals in the IDF and Mossad just got
caught with their hands in a very dirty cookie jar in Syria.

Western powers have been creating, funding, directing, and fighting
among terrorists for a long time. Its nothing new, but is a fact that
rarely seems to make it into the Western media and to the awareness of
most people. Or if it does, the implications are never explored. No
surprise there. Perhaps that will now begin to change since these types
of ‘smoking guns’ have never been better documented and more apparent.
