Today, each of us must ask and answer for ourselves: What is a good life? What is a life worth living? This is not an easy task, but the world's great philosophical and religious traditions provide us with invaluable resources as we attempt to tackle these most important questions. In our pluralistic moment, we need to learn to hear from these traditions and engage in conversation about meaning and purpose across important and enduring lines of difference. In this video, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, president of Zaytuna College and perhaps the most influential Islamic scholar in the Western world will lay out a Muslim vision of a life worth living. After Shaykh Hamza's remarks, he and Miroslav Volf, Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School and Founding Director of the Yale Center for Culture, engage in an inter-tradition conversation about the good life– what it is, how we can get it, and how we can realize it together. Prominent Muslim scholar Hamza Yusuf faced opposition at the Reviving the Islamic Spirit Convention in Canada for his stance on Israel’s war on Gaza. Some people in the audience interrupted his speech, accusing him of undermining the Palestinian cause. In 2020, Yusuf received a wave of criticism for publicly supporting the UAE’s choice to establish relations with Israel, a decision that was widely criticised by many Muslim religious authorities. Yusuf has previously courted controversy by positing blame on the Palestinians for their suffering, mocking the Syrian uprising, and for having referred to the UAE as country that was “committed to tolerance”. 1 It is not 'Temple Mount' and no Muslim should refer to it as such never mind a Shaykh 2 It is never upto the Ulama of Jerusalem to decide whether a Jewish temple should be made on the Aqsa Complex. That also smacks sheer ignorance or an agenda. 3 It is good. Sh Asrar refuted Sh Hamza on this because the Zionists will utilise this otherwise, and the other Ulama are quiet. 4 This is not the first time. Many years ago, Sh Hamza said Lahori Qadiyanis are Muslim, and Sh Asrar alone pulled him up, after which he only retracted due to an Azhar fatwa. 5 Sh Hamza receives UAE funding, and his guide, Sh Bin Bayyah, gave the fatwa for normalisation with Israel, so there is an agenda. 6 Sh Asrar is clearly annoyed, but the entire interview of Sh Hamza has worse things like pacifying Muslims, spewing Zionist myths about Hamas killing children on October 7th, and making excuses for Benjamin Netanyahu.
