Fred Hampton was a deputy chairman of the Black Panther Party. He worked in his community to teach about political action and fought for civil rights by demanding simple things like integrated public pools. He was also an outspoken critic of Cook County State's Attorney Edward Hanrahan, whose “War on Gangs” was largely an excuse to target and persecute the city’s black youth. 

 

On December 4th, 1969, a secret FBI operation stormed Hampton’s apartment, firing nearly 100 rounds and executing Hampton, who was unconscious after being drugged by an undercover FBI operative. Shockingly (or not?), it was only after leaked documents from an FBI office in Pennsylvania revealed an illegal counter-intelligence operation that the FBI’s involvement was proven. 

 

This is just one of many historical examples that makes it easy to believe that government agencies have no problem working secretly and illegally to persecute American citizens.
