Warning: The chronology of events might be a little incorrect, as I cannot guarantee that I remember everything in the proper order.
I took my 17 months old grand daughter out in her pram on Thursday 10th of August 2006, in the late afternoon, when I saw a Police van, with “white” Police people inside, parked on Queen’s Road, Walthamstow, London E17, on the other side of the road opposite newly-built Masjid Umer, an ex-synagogue, and one “white” Policemen and a “white” Policewoman in faction in front of a house occupied by Asians. In another house a bulky “white” man in plain clothes was standing at the open door and watching the Masjid. Two “white” photographers were on each side of the road pacing up and down. As the Police officers and the man in plain clothes were inside private properties, I decided not to approach them and took out my digital camera and shot a few pictures when I saw four “black” persons (youths) address the two Police officers and then those inside the van. They burst out laughing (rire aux éclats) and seemed to have a jolly good time with the Police officers although the atmosphere seemed all tense because I was asking myself whether the Police had not closed down the Masjid, but I saw a few persons still heading towards the Masjid for worship.
When Masjid-goers were emerging out of the Masjid, I asked one of them what the matter was. I was engaged in a conversation with him (it seems that women are not allowed in this Masjid) when another one barged in and addressed me visibly not happy, but there was neither loud discussion nor any verbal violence. I asked him to tell the Muslims that Israel is behind this Terror Alert again as they have blackmailed England into joining them in their war of aggression and genocidal campaign, otherwise they will face severe attacks from Israeli government or “uncontrolled” factions that might even blow up numerous planes over Europe using their “new” weapons of mass destruction that they are actually experimenting in Lebanon and Palestine. This scenario, and not a “conspiracy theory”, looks very plausible. I told him that Alex Jones* had predicted in July 2001 that the US government would attack the Trade Centre and accuse Usama Bin Ladin of the attack, and it happened as predicted except for one thing, that the Israeli were behind the attacks. So, if planes will be blown up, Muslims will be the scapegoats. Suddenly, a bulky “white” Police officer crossed the road and addressed me not very courteously, which already instinctively put me on the defensive. I did not appreciate his interference, as he did not address the one who seemed to be aggressive, but I remained civil. I only had time to notice his number, 520. When questioned, I answered (probably amongst other things) that I was talking to MY people, and asked him if this was forbidden. He did not answer and went back to the other side of the road. I left with my grandchild heading towards Tesco on Hoe Street.
* Alex Jones lied because it was Martyr Milton William Cooper who made that prediction somewhere in June 2001 and Alex knew about it as he had interviewed Cooper himself, but he falsely claimed he made the prediction instead of Cooper.

As I do not watch television and was not on the Internet for some time, I was not aware of the alleged “Muslim Terror Plot” and of the nth arrest of “Muslim Terror suspects”. The new western diktat is that all suspects are guilty until proven innocent. According to new government ukases, the Police (some trained in Israel, I am told) can shoot on site, up to 11 bullets on unarmed civilians. Is it a coincidence that I never hear of Jewish, Christian or Homosexual Terror suspects or criminals being arrested, their families molested, and their “religion” (way of life), or gunned down by Police or the Secret Services?
A neighbour tipped me off about the current situation and stressed that
the Muslim worshippers were being harassed day and night and terrorized
by Police and others armed with machine guns at 4 or 5 o’clock in the
morning, Fajar Salaat time, and added that many worshippers do not turn
up to the Masjid any more. By the way, the only people attending
Masjids are usually local small business people and their families,
mostly simple-minded guys who are for the most part collaborators with
the Local authorities, and are absolutely harmless, and they do not
represent the Muslims at large.

I was told later on that Police had arrested several “Muslims” suspected of plotting to blow up many passenger planes. My first reaction was – another fake government Terror Alert in order to distract the people’s attention from the mass murder perpetrated in Lebanon and Palestine by the Nazis from Zionist Israel (with UN blessings) and other genocide to come (Syria, Iran, etc.!). I learned that Daryl Bradford Smith, Eric Husfschmid (and Alex Jones) had already denounced the Fake British Terror Alert reminding their audience that the USA had acknowledged 50 such Terror Alerts in the past years to be absolutely as fake as the British ones, made only to re-establish the popularity of the leaders and rally public opinion behind such mass-murderers as George W. Bush and Tony Blair! Only the notorious lying media (Zionists are masters of deception) can continue to pretend that those Terror Alerts are not fakes! When the media are allowed to publish the names of the “suspects”, the message is quite clear! THE SUSPECT IS GUILTY IN ADVANCE AND NO EVIDENCE IS REQUIRED!
The next day, 11.8.2006, I had an appointment after the Friday prayers. I am one of those very few Muslims who do not attend mosques, but do attend the Catholic Church every now and then!
While waiting, I ventured down Queen’s Road alone as I had heard
repeated Police sirens and helicopter noise. (For several years Police
have been sounding their sirens in the area dozens of times each day,
apparently to instill fear in the community or make people get use to
it for the day Martial Law will be finally established in the UK like
the Zionists have planned for the USA and other western nations.) A
neighbour had told me that the place was packed with Police and
television cameras. On the way, Geneviève (Independent) approached me, and Jane (The Times).
We had a chat. When we arrived at the spot, what I saw was absolutely
revolting. The Police had invested the Masjid and well-equipped
television crews were all over the place. Police in plain clothes
mingled with the worshippers and performed salaat, I was later told.
When the Masjid worshippers came out of the mosque, cameras went into
action. I said to Jane/Geneviève something like: “Where are all the
sexy girls? It’s not at all interesting to make all that fuss for such
a pathetic crowd!”
It seems to me that Jane/Geneviève asked me permission to film me while she was asking me a few questions. I was very upset by what I had just seen, an absolute violation of Muslims’ right to worship in peace, and not under the guns of shoot-to-kill assassins, and said whatever came to my mind. But, I remember clearly saying that this was a fake government Terror Alert announcing an impending major government sponsored terrorist attack on the British people like the Zionist orchestrated one on 7/7 or like 9/11 in the USA that was carried out by MOSSAD-CIA. When asked how I knew that, I answered because I do not watch television or read the controlled Zionist media. I added that the USA has arrogantly acknowledged (boasted) about 50 government orchestrated Fake Terror Alerts. I also said that I had known Britain to be the most civilized and tolerant country in Europe (obviously a colossal blunder!), but that now it had turned into a Fascist State like France and the US.
Another journalist came to me (Libération, France) just outside the
Masjid, and we spoke in French. I told him that if he was one of those
racist Zionist journalists of the French media, he should know that the
Zionist-Jews, Israel and the Lubavitchis are behind this Fake Terror
Alert. I told him that the Israelis Nazis want England to join in their
genocidal war effort, and have most probably blackmailed the British
Government into cooperating or suffer dire consequences, for example
the blowing up of numerous planes over Europe, but, as soon as he heard
the magical words “Jews…Zionists…Luibavitchis…Israel…”),
he excused himself and said he was going to hear what the Imâm who had
just come out of the Masjid had to say, saying that he would come back
to me later, but he never did. I went back to Jane/Geneviève on the other side of the road. I heard a journalist question a man with a beard while taking notes. His colleague was writing in short hand. I took a picture of them and proceeded back to the other side of the road.

There, I stood behind (slightly by the side) of a cameraman and took a shot when a young 'Asian' approached me and asked me politely to leave the pavement in order not to obstruct the worshippers who were coming out of the Masjid. He addressed me as “uncle”. But, I was annoyed because, first, I was not obstructing anybody and, then, that young man seemed to be monitoring only the Asian (allegedly Muslim) crowd! I said something like:
“Why
don’t you say the same thing to the Rupert Murdoch’s mafia who is
filming even your women in hijaab or to the Police who is causing a
public disturbance by their mere provocative presence. The Police are
terrorizing the Muslim communities all over England making the British
people hate the Muslims the more."
“ How dare you touch me?" pointing my finger at him. This is an assault!”He immediately released me. Other officers were watching, but did not intervene. I was not in the way at all, but other people were on the pavement while I was on the side, as the picture I had taken at that very moment tends to show. I went back to the other side of the road and informed Jane or Geneviève about this incident. They were surprised and left me to go to the other side to carry on with their job.

I have seen the British government, at National and Local levels, use Jews (or vice versa), Blacks and Asian collaborators to discriminate against Muslims who do not submit to their diktat. I am one such victim. When I object, I am accused of “racism and anti-Semitism”, and the discrimination has been going on for years, mainly through the bogus bodies called the Commission of Racial Equality (CRE) and its “Equal Opportunities” vassal. I have witnessed so many times the hatred of Blacks, including Black Evangelical Zionist Christians, for anything Muslim and Arab, even in their literature. Several years back, when I had invited the Police to my Black ghetto following an attack of Christian Blacks on Muslim Asians at the Hackney Marsh Sunday Market, and showed them the racist anti-Muslim (and anti-Catholic) literature portraying Muhammad as a Mercenary Terrorist paid by the Pope, and the Pope as Satan himself, the two “white” officers said that they had all the rights because they were in England, a country of “Free Speech”.
It is impossible to walk down the streets of Walthamstow without being
aggressed verbally and sometimes pushed about by Blacks, especially
Black women, even with my granddaughter in her pram while the Whites,
Asians and North Africans will normally show all kinds of courtesy. The
hatred of some Blacks can be easily spotted in their face as well as in
their unwarranted aggressive behaviour. The government is responsible
for this anti-Muslim racism as it has made England into a land of
hatred against Muslims and Arabs, and this visceral hatred is
increasing against innocent Muslims and their families who are
systematically targeted by the Gestapo-like Police on a daily basis,
imprisoned, tortured, demonized, as well as their religion Islam.
It is obvious that this is again a Fake Terror Alert to boost the popularity of mass-murderers and war criminals Tony Blair (Knight of Malta ?) and George W. Bush (Knight of Eulogia ?). Blair was risking a Coup d’État anytime! To the look of it he is preparing for Martial Law and for another major government sponsored terrorist attack on the British people in order to stir hatred against Muslims and Arabs in order to distract the people from the real national and international issues.
However, the most vicious attack did not come from the
Police, but from a group of Asian (Muslim) thugs (probably on the
payroll of the British Secret Services) who threatened to “punch me in
the face”, swore at me several times using the f… word, knocked me on
purpose in order to provoke a reaction, told me to “f… off otherwise
there will be blood” with the Police standing only a few yards from
them. No officer moved. It is the very first time that I felt my life
so closely threatened. I had to use my skills in order to divert
attention away from me, but the “Secret Service” Asian ring leader was
watching me closely from the other side of the road while I was talking
to a couple of very young lads. They came over to me. They were a group
of about 15 youth led by the B.S.S.(British Secret Service) agent
provocateur. This confirmed my suspicion that the Masjid or a group
of Asian close to the Masjid and working for the British Secret
Services had in fact staged that event.
So, for the alleged “Terror plotters”, as usual Police will find no evidence at all, and will have to release the “guilty-suspects” after having destroyed their career and provoked their anger and that of their family! But, some of them might one day take their revenge! Or the Police will concoct “evidence” or make other false charges like, for example, “one of the suspects have been found to access child pornography on the Internet”, or “a book on Al-Qaeda (The CIA-MOSSAD Terrorist cells) was found in one of the suspects’ house”, etc.! This is what the government is actually doing, creating “des bombes à retardement”! They are lucky that their victims are not yet armed! But, as the saying goes: “Chickens always come home to roost!”
When Bush was told that America was under attack, he did not move a finger nor bat an eyelid, and all he did when he awoke from his deep sleep was to speak of vengeance against Iraq and Afghanistan and a Holy Jewish-Christian War on Islam and Muslims - Operation Infinite Justice! When Blair is now told that there exists a plot to blow up several planes, what does he do? He discusses the matter with the other war criminal Bush and then goes on holiday while Bush joins the orgy party (normally with male porn stars) at Bohemian Grove! Both Blair and Bush orchestrated this Government Fake Terror Alert in advance for their own benefits! What does this tell people like me who are not mind controlled by the Zionist media? Blair has obviously planned this coup with Bush well before he went on holidays. Or Can he be running away from a possible coup d’état from his enemies? The (obvious) reason why Blair keeps enjoying his holidays is because he has staged this masquerade himself and knows that there would not be any risk of any highjacking of planes at all!
Muslims are not that stupid! If they had the technology and the superhuman skills like the ones they have been accused of possessing during 9/11, they would not attack innocent people or civilians (it’s against their religion by the way) but use those deadly weapons against the invading Israeli and Allied European armies of assassins in their own lands!!!!!!!
The greatest Holocaust of modern history is that of
Muslims with over one hundred million casualties and the quasi totality
of their countries stolen, devastated and controlled by the western
super powers with their people enslaved and groping under political and
cultural terrorism. Because none of them is adequately armed (most of
them are literally unarmed), the west got away with the worse genocides
of the past two centuries by attacking totally defenseless nations, and
label all Muslim resistance to their invading and occupying armies of
murderers as Islamic fascism or Islamic terrorism, Islamists,
Fundamentalists, Fanatics, etc. As for the Masjids, there are no and
there has never been any “Muslim Terrorists” in anyone of them that are
run by the local communities. There may be some however that are
actually run by MI5 and MI6, like the one in Finsburry Park, I am told, or like the one run by homosexuals.
Slaves
(“house-Negroes”) of the local and national government run most of the
Masjids where no free speech is allowed (except for MPs, Police and
other government officials), while synagogues and churches can do
practically anything they want without ever being bothered by the
authorities, from raising funds for the army of Israeli assassins and
to finance insurrections of Christian minorities in the third world, to
political campaigns run directly from their places of worship.
I have attended many times Catholic churches in Paris, Colombes and Neuilly-sur-Seine, until the day I got disgusted because the Zionists had taken over all of them!
Often Muslims have hated and shunned me because of my Hindu, Jewish and Christian tendencies, but that is the Being I am and I will never change my Hindu-Israelite-Christian-Islamic Religion for all the gold in the world. It is known world-wide that 40 million Zionist Anti-Christians (Evangelical) are setting up a powerful lobby in the USA in order to support the criminal war of Eretz Israel and their extermination campaigns of the Palestinian and other Arab peoples in order to be “raptured” and to hasten the coming of their Jewish Messiah, but not of Jesus Christ. So, let Britain continue labeling Muslims as terrorists, fascists, fundamentalists, fanatics and what not when in fact Muslims are the true victims of British and western terrorism and genocidal policies. The west has Terrorist Camps all over their lands, where they train the worst criminals on planet earth, but they call those camps Military Academies! The west manufactures, sells and uses weapons of mass destruction while they fight tooth and nail to prevent Muslims from arming themselves against invading armies from both East and West. But, one day will have to be payback day! The West cannot exterminate all the one billion + Muslims in the world! Or can it? They will exterminate more than five billion people as they have planned only if we allow them to do so without a fight, an economic and an armed struggle, but not any kind of sterile pacifist talks! The West invented the term “peace-process” which in real fact means the continuation of war and of the status quo while they remain the real masters and destroyers of the planet and its habitat.
However, the persecution, humiliation and demonization of Muslims in Britain (and in the West) will continue as long as the Muslims do not stand up for their rights as equal citizens! For the time being, only collaborators (traitors) enjoy some privileges until their masters turn on them and their families and murder them also without any pity. From pseudo-democracy to fascism, Britain has not changed much however, the same old bloody imperialist thanks to mainly Zionist bankers! But, Islam is a force. Islam is power. Islam is to lead not to be led. Islam is for slaves and the oppressed to free themselves. Islam is for the free not to ever let them be oppressed and enslaved. Islam cannot ever be destroyed as it is in every man and woman that comes to life on this planet. Sooner or later it comes out from all the pores of all freedom fighters, fighters against all kinds of injustices, and not for nationalism, socialism, liberalism or democracy. Islam is the latest greatest gift the world has ever been granted by the Almighty powers that gave life and meaning to everything. The Holy Qur’ân remains forever the most powerful Book and the Best ever Book that has reached Mankind (and Jinnkind).

I repeat, as we continue to sit on the edge of the cliff that is full scale World War III and likely nuclear annihilation, that every racist, corrupt, war murdering state, as well as the UN in its current form, should be destroyed. This includes more than any others, the true ‘Axis of Evil’ in Israel, Britain and America. These three nations are the scourge of humanity and the greatest threat this world has ever faced. Hitler will look like a saint compared to those behind these criminal states if they have their way. Mass de-population is not a ‘theory’, it is their ultimate agenda knowing full well that the fraud they have perpetuated on all of the people is being irreversibly exposed. Their time is running out… and they know this.
These three nations, along with a disgraced and disgusting UN, must be destroyed in their current form, in their place must be people who represent the true will of the people and an absolute commitment to respect for every single persons rights. So it really does not matter what happens to me, because whenever it is that I meet my maker I shall smile, knowing that I did my best in this very, very fucked up world of ours. I have shown my ultimate respect for all life and made my life an example of the price we should be willing to pay in order to make the world right. I am not alone, I am proud to follow in the footsteps of countless people who made one decision, to face the tyranny without fear and without compromise.

A controversial Muslim cleric will
not face action despite telling his followers to claim benefits and
saying David Cameron should be killed.
Telling fellow fanatics to claim 'jihad seeker's allowance', Anjem Choudary, who in the past has planned to disrupt the minute's silence on Remembrance Sunday, also openly mocked hard-working Britons, calling them 'slaves'.
The Sun newspaper secretly filmed him saying Islam will overrun Europe, David Cameron and Barack Obama should be killed, and called the Queen 'ugly'.
The newspaper gave its evidence to the authorities, but Thames Valley Police today said: 'The material fell below an evidential threshold to pursue a criminal case against him.'
After the incident, Choudary said he had been 'joking' and his words had been misconstrued. He also maintained that Osama Bin Laden was his 'hero'.
The father-of-four takes home more than £25,000 a year in benefits and lives in a £320,000 house in Leytonstone, East London.
He told a crowd of around 30 fanatics: 'People will say, "Ah, but you are not working". But the normal situation is for you to take money from the kuffar (non-Muslim).
'So we take jihad seeker's allowance. You need to get support.'
In another video a grinning Choudary is recorded telling his disciples that it is justifiable to take money from non-believers.
He said: 'The normal situation is to take money from the kuffar. You work, give us the money, Allahu Akhbar (God is great). Hopefully there's no one from the DSS listening to this.'
He
also called Mr Cameron, Mr Obama and the leaders of Pakistan and Egypt
the 'shaitan', or devil, and said he wanted them to be killed.
Choudary spoke glowingly of the 9/11 attacks and urged his followers to have 'hate' in their hearts for core British concepts like democracy, freedom and freedom of religion.
The 45-year-old former lawyer
added: 'We are going to take England — the Muslims are coming. Brussels
is 30 per cent, 40 per cent Muslim and Amsterdam. Bradford is 17 per
cent Muslim.
'These people are like a tsunami going across Europe. And over here we're just relaxing, taking over Bradford brother. The reality is changing.'
At another meeting he displayed a £10 note of the Queen and described the portrait as 'ugly'.
Choudary, 45, ran a group called al-Muhajiroun which held anti-Western demonstrations and is the former leader of Islam4UK. Both were outlawed in 2010 under the Terrorism Act.
He told the Sun that his reference to 'jihad seeker's allowance' was a joke and claims he has never urged his followers to kill anyone.
He said: 'Cameron is doing satanic actions but I am not asking for anyone to be killed. We want everyone to worship Islam.
'I invite Cameron and the Queen to worship Islam.That would be an ideal situation.'
His teachings were met with ridicule by some Muslims. Twitter user Razwan Faraz said: 'Islam teaches us to be independent and self sufficient.
'You clearly are a living dichotomy of ideas and actions!'
Choudary later said that his rant had been 'misconstrued' and said his jihad seeker's allowance' comment had been a mere joke.
He also maintained that he had been comparing economic and welfare systems between Islam and Britain in a talk, and discussing how Islam would provide 'basic needs' for its citizens, The Sun reported.

Police
are investigating comments made at the Israel Apartheid Week event
attended by Liberal Democrat peer Jenny Tonge, the JC can reveal.
Officers are reviewing remarks made by former US marine Ken O'Keefe
following allegations that he incited racial hatred when comparing
Jewish audience members to Nazis.
Baroness Tonge was sitting next to Mr O'Keefe as he screamed at
audience members, said Israel "must be destroyed" and claimed Mossad was
"directly involved" in the September 11 terror attacks on the United
States.
She made no attempt to distance herself from him or his remarks, and
launched her own tirade against Israel which has today been widely
condemned from figures across the political spectrum.
Baroness Tonge told the audience at Middlesex University's Free
Palestine Society that Israel would "not last forever" and would "lose
support and then they will reap what they have sown".
She said Americans would tell "the Israel lobby in the USA: enough is enough".
A Lib Dem spokesman distanced the party from her comments made at the
event last Thursday. He said they were not reflective of party policy
and that her presence at the event was "extremely ill-advised and
ill-judged".
During the heated debate Mr O'Keefe said: "If Israel is inherently a
racist, apartheid state, then I want no part of it. Israel has no place
in this world and it must, in its current form, if you want me to use
some inflammatory language, be destroyed.
"The Jewish state is acting on behalf of the Jewish people. You [the
Jewish people], like the Nazis, now have a special obligation. The
decent Germans of World War Two, what did they do when the Nazis came to
power and instituted their policies? Did they do enough to stop the
Nazis? No, they didn't.
"What are the Jewish people doing right now? Are you doing enough to stop your racist, apartheid, genocidal state?"
Two pro-Israel activists in the audience reported Mr O'Keefe to police.
A Barnet Police spokesman said: "Evidence from the event is being
reviewed. This is obviously a delicate investigation that will require
balancing the right to free speech, and the rights of people not to be
discriminated against".
Labour leader Ed Miliband responded to Baroness Tonge's comments by
tweeting: "No place in politics for those who question existence of the
state of Israel. Nick Clegg must condemn Jenny Tonge's remark and demand
apology."
In a joint statement the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership
Council said: "We call for the Whip to be removed immediately from Jenny
Tonge. Given her long-standing, pernicious views on Israel, her
comments are both sinister and abhorrent.
"There is no place for someone like Jenny Tonge in mainstream
political parties in this country and it is time for the Liberal
Democrats to act quickly and decisively, once and for all."
Mr Clegg originally sacked Baroness Tonge from her role as Lib Dem
health spokesperson in the Lords in 2010 after she called for an inquiry
into allegations Israeli Army staff trafficked organs while helping
Haiti earthquake victims.
She was previously sacked in 2004 by Charles Kennedy for suggesting she would consider becoming a suicide bomber.
Baroness Tonge had preceded her comments on Israel by "welcoming" the JC to the event at the university's Hendon campus.
She said: "Can I give a big welcome to the Jewish Chronicle, I am
sure they are here. Thank you for coming. I hope we give you lots of
things you can say about us.
"However any of you like to interpret my remarks, I am not antisemitic. It is injustice that concerns me most.
"I am certainly anti the current Israel government and I am anti the Israel lobby that supports that government.
"I am not antisemitic. Get it? It is very important to make that distinction."
Baroness Tonge said that when the Israel lobby "decide to go for you, they will go for you in a big way. I bear the scars."
Labour Friends of Israel chairman John Woodcock MP said: "Nick Clegg
must act. Comments and remarks such as these have absolutely no place in
mainstream politics. Words of excuse or apology in response are no
longer enough.
"Nick Clegg needs to take disciplinary action against his offensive
peer to reassure people the government remains serious about a two-state
solution."
Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer said: "This is not a case of
Baroness Tonge misspeaking but the most recent of a series of
vehemently anti-Israeli statements and sharing platforms with people
that I would consider extremists. Nick Clegg must bite the bullet and
remove the Liberal Democrat whip from her once and for all."
A Liberal Democrat spokesman said: "Jenny Tonge does not speak for
the party on Israel/Palestine. Her presence and comments at this event
were extremely ill-advised and ill judged. The tone of the debate at
this event was wholly unacceptable and adds nothing to the peace
process.

Craig Monteilh - The Ex-FBI Informant with a Change of Heart:
‘There Is No Real Hunt. It’s Fixed’

Craig Monteilh says he did not
balk when his FBI handlers gave him the OK to have sex with the Muslim
women his undercover operation was targeting. Nor, at the time, did he
shy away from recording their pillow talk.
“They said, if it would enhance
the intelligence, go ahead and have sex. So I did,” Monteilh told the
Guardian as he described his year as a confidential FBI informant sent
on a secret mission to infiltrate southern Californian mosques.
It is an astonishing admission
that goes to the heart of the intelligence surveillance of
Muslim communities in America in the years after 9/11. While police and
FBI leaders have insisted they are acting to defend America from a
terrorist attack, civil liberties groups have insisted they have
repeatedly gone too far and treated an entire religious group as
suspicious.
Monteilh was involved in one of
the most controversial tactics: the use of “confidential informants” in
so-called entrapment cases. This is when suspects carry out or plot fake
terrorist “attacks” at the request or under the close supervision of an
FBI undercover operation using secret informants. Often those
informants have serious criminal records or are supplied with a
financial motivation to net suspects.
In the case of the Newburgh Four –
where four men were convicted for a fake terror attack on Jewish
targets in the Bronx – a confidential informant offered $250,000, a free
holiday and a car to one suspect for help with the attack.
In the case of the Fort Dix Five,
which involved a fake plan to attack a New Jersey military base, one
informant’s criminal past included attempted murder, while another
admitted in court at least two of the suspects later jailed for life had
not known of any plot.
Such actions have led Muslim
civil rights groups to wonder if their communities are being unfairly
targeted in a spying game that is rigged against them. Monteilh says
that is exactly what happens.
“The way the FBI conducts their
operations, It is all about entrapment … I know the game, I know the
dynamics of it. It’s such a joke, a real joke. There is no real hunt.
It’s fixed,” he said.
But Monteilh has regrets now
about his involvement in a scheme called Operation Flex. Sitting in the
kitchen of his modest home in Irvine, near Los Angeles, Monteilh said
the FBI should publicly apologise for his fruitless quest to root out
Islamic radicals in Orange County, though he does not hold out much hope
that will happen. “They don’t have the humility to admit a mistake,” he
said.
Monteilh’s story sounds like
something out of a pulp thriller.
Under the supervision of two FBI
agents the muscle-bound fitness instructor created a fictitious
French-Syrian altar ego, called Farouk Aziz. In this disguise in 2006
Monteilh started hanging around mosques in Orange County – the long
stretch of suburbia south of LA – and pretended to convert to Islam.
He was tasked with befriending
Muslims and blanket recording their conversations. All this information
was then fed back to the FBI who told Monteilh to act like a radical
himself to lure out Islamist sympathizers.
Yet, far from succeeding,
Monteilh eventually so unnerved Orange County’s Muslim community that
that they got a restraining order against him. In an ironic twist, they
also reported Monteilh to the FBI: unaware he was in fact working
undercover for the agency.
Monteilh does not look like a
spy. He is massively well built, but soft-spoken and friendly. He is 49
but looks younger. He lives in a small rented home in Irvine that blends
into the suburban sprawl of southern California. Yet Monteilh knows the
spying game intimately well.
By his own account Monteilh got
into undercover work after meeting a group of off-duty cops working out
in a gym. Monteilh told them he had spent time in prison in Chino,
serving time for passing fraudulent checks.
It is a criminal past he explains
by saying he was traumatised by a nasty divorce. “It was a bad time in
my life,” he said. He and the cops got to talking about the criminals
Monteilh had met while in Chino. The information was so useful that
Monteilh says he began to work on undercover drug and organised crime
cases.
Eventually he asked to work on
counter-terrorism and was passed on to two FBI handlers, called Kevin
Armstrong and Paul Allen. These two agents had a mission and an alias
ready-made for him.
Posing as Farouk Aziz he would
infiltrate local mosques and Islamic groups around Orange County. “Paul
Allen said: ‘Craig, you are going to be our computer worm. Our guy that
gives us the real pulse of the Muslim community in America’,” Monteilh
said.
The operation began simply
enough. Monteilh started hanging out at mosques, posing as Aziz, and
explaining he wanted to learn more about religion. In July, 2006, at the
Islamic Center of Irvine, he converted to Islam.
Monteilh also began attending
other mosques, including the Orange County Islamic Foundation. Monteilh
began circulating endlessly from mosque to mosque, spending long days in
prayer or reading books or just hanging out in order to get as many
people as possible to talk to him.
“Slowly I began to wear the
robes, the hat, the scarf and they saw me slowly transform and growing a
beard. At that point, about three or four months later, [my FBI
handlers] said: ‘OK, now start to ask questions’.”
Those questions were aimed at
rooting out radicals. Monteilh would talk of his curiosity over the
concepts of jihad and what Muslims should do about injustices in the
world, especially where it pertained to American foreign policy.
He talked of access to weapons, a
possible desire to be a martyr and inquired after like-minded souls. It
was all aimed at trapping people in condemning statements. “The skill
is that I am going to get you to say something. I am cornering you to
say “jihad”,” he said.
Of course, the chats were recorded.
In scenes out of a James Bond
movie, Monteilh said he sometimes wore a secret video recorder sewn into
his shirt. At other times he activated an audio recorder on his key
rings.
Monteilh left his keys in offices
and rooms in the mosques that he attended in the hope of recording
conversations that took place when he was not here. He did it so often
that he earned a reputation with other worshippers for being careless
with his keys. The recordings were passed back to his FBI handlers at
least once a week.
He also met with them every two
months at a hotel room in nearby Anaheim for a more intense debriefing.
Monteilh says he was grilled on specific individuals and asked to view
charts showing networks of relationships among Orange County’s Muslim
population.
He said the FBI had two basic
aims. Firstly, they aimed to uncover potential militants. Secondly, they
could also use any information Monteilh discovered – like an affair or
someone being gay – to turn targeted people into becoming FBI informants
themselves.
None of it seemed to unnerve his
FBI bosses, not even when he carried out a suggestion to begin seducing
Muslim women and recording them.
At one hotel meeting, agent Kevin
Armstrong explained the FBI attitude towards the immense breadth of
Operation Flex – and any concerns over civil rights – by saying simply:
“Kevin is God.”
Monteilh’s own attitude evolved
into something very similar. “I was untouchable. I am a felon, I am on
probation and the police cannot arrest me. How empowering is that? It is
very empowering. You began to have a certain arrogance about it. It is
almost taunting. They told me: ‘You are an untouchable’,” he said.
But it was not always easy. “I
started at 4am. I ended at 9.30pm. Really, it was a lot of work … Farouk
took over. Craig did not exist,” he said. But it was also well paid: at
the peak of Operation Flex, Monteilh was earning more than $11,000 a
month.
But he was wrong about being untouchable.
Far from uncovering radical
terror networks, Monteilh ended up traumatising the community he was
sent into. Instead of embracing calls for jihad or his questions about
suicide bombers or his claims to have access to weapons, Monteilh was
instead reported to the FBI as a potentially dangerous extremist.
A restraining order was also
taken out against him in June 2007, asking him to stay away from the
Islamic Center of Irvine. Operation Flex was a bust and Monteilh had to
kill off his life as Farouk Aziz.
But the story did not end there.
In circumstances that remain murky Monteilh then sued the FBI over his
treatment, claiming that they abandoned him once the operation was over.
He also ended up in jail after
Irvine police prosecuted him for defrauding two women, including a
former girlfriend, as part of an illegal trade in human growth hormone
at fitness clubs. (Monteilh claims those actions were carried out as
part of another secret string operation for which he was forced to carry
the can.)
What is not in doubt is that
Monteilh’s identity later became public. In 2009 the FBI brought a case
against Ahmad Niazi, an Afghan immigrant in Orange County.
The evidence included secret
recordings and even calling Osama bin Laden “an angel”. That was
Monteilh’s work and he outed himself to the press to the shock of the
very Muslims he had been spying on who now realised that Farouk Aziz –
the radical they had reported to the FBI two years earlier – had in fact
been an undercover FBI operative.
Now Monteilh says he set Niazi up
and the FBI was trying to blackmail the Afghani into being an
informant. “I built the whole relationship with Niazi. Through my
coercion we talked about jihad a lot,” he said. The FBI’s charges
against Niazi were indeed later dropped.
Now Monteilh has joined an
American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit against the FBI. Amazingly, after
first befriending Muslim leaders in Orange County as Farouk Aziz, then
betraying them as Craig Monteilh, he has now joined forces with them
again to campaign for their civil liberties.
That has now put Monteilh’s
testimony about his year undercover is at the heart of a fresh legal
effort to prove that the FBI operation in Orange County unfairly
targeted a vulnerable Muslim community, trampling on civil rights in the
name of national security.
The FBI did not respond to a request from the Guardian for comment.
It is not the first time Monteilh
has shifted his stance. In the ACLU case Monteilh is now posing as the
sorrowful informant who saw the error of his ways.
But in previous court papers
filed against the Irvine Police and the FBI, Monteilh’s lawyers
portrayed him as the loyal intelligence asset who did sterling work
tackling the forces of Islamic radicalism and was let down by his
superiors.
In those papers Monteilh
complained that FBI agents did not act speedily enough on a tip he gave
them about a possible sighting of bomb-making materials. Now Monteilh
says that tip was not credible.
Either way it does add up to a
story that shifts with the telling. But that fact alone goes to the
heart of the FBI’s use of such confidential informants in investigating
Muslim communities.
FBI operatives with profiles
similar to Monteilh’s – of a lengthy criminal record, desire for cash
and a flexibility with the truth – have led to high profile cases of
alleged entrapment that have shocked civil rights groups across America.
In most cases the informants have
won their prosecutions and simply disappeared. Monteilh is the only one
speaking out. But whatever the reality of his year undercover, Monteilh
is almost certainly right about one impact of Operation Flex and the
exposure of his undercover activities:
“Because of this the Muslim
community will never trust the FBI again.”

Telling fellow fanatics to claim 'jihad seeker's allowance', Anjem Choudary, who in the past has planned to disrupt the minute's silence on Remembrance Sunday, also openly mocked hard-working Britons, calling them 'slaves'.
The Sun newspaper secretly filmed him saying Islam will overrun Europe, David Cameron and Barack Obama should be killed, and called the Queen 'ugly'.
The newspaper gave its evidence to the authorities, but Thames Valley Police today said: 'The material fell below an evidential threshold to pursue a criminal case against him.'
After the incident, Choudary said he had been 'joking' and his words had been misconstrued. He also maintained that Osama Bin Laden was his 'hero'.
The father-of-four takes home more than £25,000 a year in benefits and lives in a £320,000 house in Leytonstone, East London.
He told a crowd of around 30 fanatics: 'People will say, "Ah, but you are not working". But the normal situation is for you to take money from the kuffar (non-Muslim).
'So we take jihad seeker's allowance. You need to get support.'
In another video a grinning Choudary is recorded telling his disciples that it is justifiable to take money from non-believers.
He said: 'The normal situation is to take money from the kuffar. You work, give us the money, Allahu Akhbar (God is great). Hopefully there's no one from the DSS listening to this.'

Choudary, 45, ran a group called al-Muhajiroun which held anti-Western demonstrations and is the former leader of Islam4UK. Both were outlawed in 2010 under the Terrorism Act.
He told the Sun that his reference to 'jihad seeker's allowance' was a joke and claims he has never urged his followers to kill anyone.
He said: 'Cameron is doing satanic actions but I am not asking for anyone to be killed. We want everyone to worship Islam.
'I invite Cameron and the Queen to worship Islam.That would be an ideal situation.'
His teachings were met with ridicule by some Muslims. Twitter user Razwan Faraz said: 'Islam teaches us to be independent and self sufficient.
'You clearly are a living dichotomy of ideas and actions!'
Choudary later said that his rant had been 'misconstrued' and said his jihad seeker's allowance' comment had been a mere joke.
He also maintained that he had been comparing economic and welfare systems between Islam and Britain in a talk, and discussing how Islam would provide 'basic needs' for its citizens, The Sun reported.
He said: 'As a joke in this talk to lighten the atmosphere I said "jihad seeker's allowance".'
He then said he believed terrorist and 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden was a 'hero' to him and some of the Muslim world.
Choudary said: 'He sacrificed his life and wealth for what he believes.
'He stood up against the super powers of his time.'

EDL "Terror Attack Plot": Six Men Plead Guilty
A planned terror attack - possibly aimed at assassinating English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson - only failed because the rally being targeted finished earlier than planned and the would-be attackers turned up late.Six islamist extremists from the Birmingham area have pleaded guilty to plotting the attack on an EDL march in the West Yorkshire town of Dewsbury last June.
Omar Mohammed Khan, 28, Mohammed Hasseen, 23, Anzal Hussain, 24, Mohammed Saud, 22, and Zohaib Ahmed, 22, and Jewel Uddin, 27, all British nationals, appeared at Woolwich Crown Court.
The court heard they planned to ambush EDL marchers using shotguns, explosives, knives and swords.
West Midlands Police have defended their actions surrounding the case after it emerged one of the men, Uddin, had been under lows-level surveillance in connection with another terrorist plot.
They confirmed he was an associate of some suspects in a Birmingham-based plot to set off a series of rucksack bombs, which they claimed would rival the 7/7 attacks.
But a source told Sky News there had been nothing to suggest in his behaviour and movements that he was involved in any other terrorist planning.
Prosecutors say five of the defendants in the EDL case travelled to the town to carry out the attack on the afternoon of June 30.
When they arrived there in two vehicles at 4pm and discovered the rally had already ended, they drove around Dewsbury for a while before heading back to Birmingham.
The plot only came to light after one of the vehicles, a Renault Laguna driven by Khan, was stopped later that day in a routine check by a police traffic patrol, on the M1 near Sheffield. The car had no valid insurance.
The vehicle was impounded and when it was searched by staff at a compound two days later, they discovered a haul of deadly weapons.
The cache included two sawn-off shotguns and ammunition, as well as an improvised explosive device packed with 458 pieces of metal shrapnel, including nails.
Police also found three partially constructed pipe bombs, samurai swords, machetes and numerous knives.
Also in the boot of the car were 10 leaflets dated the June 30, the day of the planned attack.
Titled, 'Operation in Defence of the Prophet Mohammed', the leaflets set out the men's justification for the planned attack.
It read: "To the enemies of Allah and His Messenger. This is a message to the kuffar female devil, the self-proclaimed Queen Elizabeth and her accursed jubilee, fooling a nation of blind sheep.
" ... To the EDL (English Drunkards League), enemies of Allah: Today is a day of retaliation for your blasphemy of Allah and his messenger Mohammed.
"We love death more than you love life. The penalty for blasphemy of Allah and his messenger is death.
"What we did today was a direct retaliation for your blasphemy of Allah and the Prophet Mohammed."
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said that had the plot succeeded, it would almost certainly have resulted in significant casualties.
Uddin and Khan were arrested by armed police in Birmingham three days after their failed attack. The others were detained a day later.
Senior sources have told Sky News the terror cell appeared to a be a home-grown group.
There is apparently no evidence any of the men travelled to Pakistan or other countries to receive terrorist training.
However, terrorist-related literature and training manuals were discovered during subsequent searches of properties linked to the men.
The group had carried out significant research on their targets. Computers seized by police revealed they had visited internet sites about the EDL.
Although there is no firm evidence EDL leader Tommy Robinson was an intended target, the plotters' computers show they had specifically searched for him online.
Despite apparently not having direct links to al Qaeda or other militant groups, the authorities say the group possessed a good degree of knowledge, especially about counter-surveillance techniques.
On the day of the planned attack they travelled to Dewsbury without their mobile phones, a well-known anti-surveillance tactic to prevent their location being pinpointed.
The six will be sentenced on the June 6.

Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wrote a note before his capture in which he called the victims "collateral damage" for US action in Afghanistan and Iraq, local media reported."When you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims**," Tsarnaev also scribbled on the inside wall of the boat where he hid from police during a massive manhunt in the days after the April 15 blasts, according to CBS News.
The twin explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed three people and wounded more than 260.
Citing unnamed sources, CBS News said the note claimed the bombings were payback for US military action in Afghanistan and Iraq and referred to the victims as "collateral damage."
Dzhokhar also said he did not mourn the death of his older brother Tamerlan, saying he was a martyr after being killed in a shootout with police.
Federal prosecutors have charged Dzhokhar with using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, as well as the malicious destruction of property by means of deadly explosives.
He faces the death penalty if found guilty*.
FBI agents, meanwhile, have searched the home of a former Chechen rebel fighter living in the United States who admits he met with Tamerland Tsarnaev less than a month before the bombings, Voice of America reported.
Musa Khadjimuradov, 35, told VOA that agents took his computer hard drives during a search of his home in Manchester, New Hampshire, along with DNA samples and fingerprints.
Khadjimuradov, who was granted asylum in the United States in 2004, said the FBI told him he was not a suspect in the case.
He denied any involvement but told VOA: "I believe they (were) thinking like he (was) up in New Hampshire (and) like I tried to help him or do something, you know, like that."
The case also allegedly involves three young students, two from Kazakhstan and an Ethiopian-American.
The Kazakhs -- Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov -- are being held on charges of covering up for the Tsarnaev brothers.
According to prosecutors, the two went to Dzhokhar's dorm room at the University of Massachusetts, where they were all studying, and took his backpack and laptop and threw them away.
The third friend of the younger Tsarnaev, Robel Phillipos, was accused of lying to investigators after the blasts. He was ordered free on $100,000 bail May 6 as he awaits trial.
A lawyer for Tazhayakov said his client denies the charges against him.
"As far as where the case is going, the government alleges that my client gave consent for another defendant, Kadyrbayev, to enter the dorm room, which somehow created a conspiracy," Arkady Bukh told AFP."We are trying to get more evidence in order to intelligently assess the case. At this time, my client is denying any involvement in the crime."
A hearing scheduled for the two Kazakhs was canceled on Tuesday to give the parties more time to prepare.

Stan Monteith“Grandpa Liberty”, Dr. Stan Monteith, a 50-year veteran researcher of alternative information suppressed by the mass media, a radio broadcaster since 1993, and a 35-year orthopedic surgeon who has performed many leg amputations said (starting at 1:06) concerning the Boston Marathon bombings on the May 8, 2013 episode of Radio Liberty (emphasis mine and pause words removed):
“I wanted to just call to your attention the Boston bombing on April 15. What really happened? And I’ll tell you, I don’t know what happened. But I know that they’re lying to us.
And basically, I know that they’re lying to us because of a picture that I saw on that very first day. It was a devastating picture. It was a fellow that had both legs blown off. A young man sitting in a wheelchair, being wheeled, certainly by a gentleman — a cowboy figure — who had a cowboy hat on and he was actually holding a tourniquet on the left leg, which was a below knee amputation, and there below, certainly, the stump of the below knee amputation, was the tibia — a bloody tibia — sitting and certainly, but the interesting thing is why the tourniquet wasn’t applied.
The tourniquet was just sort of underneath the leg, holding it up, it wasn’t stopping any flow of blood because there wasn’t hardly flow of blood on that side. It looked like there was some blood on the right leg which was taken off above the knee. But why would they take somebody who had just had both legs blown off and put him into a wheelchair? He would’ve been in profound shock. And why weren’t the tourniquets on both legs, certainly clamping off the blood supply? And when I saw that, I knew something was wrong.
And then of course as you know, I was a trauma surgeon for many years, I was an orthopedic surgeon. And basically, I looked at that below knee amputation on the left side, and it was a well-healed below knee amputation stump, and certainly, the kind that I would’ve done. I did many, many times, so people could wear prostheses. And there was no tear in the skin, no blood, no nothing at all — just a bloody tibia sticking out of the end — and it looked like it had been attached to this stump. Why would they do something like that?
And then of course, we’re told, this fellow’s name was Jeff Bauman. Some people said he was actually a lieutenant who had lost both legs in Afghanistan. He had a different name, but that gentleman had two above knee amputations, not below knee amputations, and this was definitely a below knee amputation, and I puzzled over this for some time.
Until, until recently, and you can get this on the internet, you can see these pictures for yourself, until basically, Jeff Bauman, 19 days after losing both legs, why, he was let out of the rehab hospital. How could that happen?
It takes a long time after you’ve lost both legs, you know, to get prostheses fitted, to get strong enough, and get the strength in your arms., but 19 days after the attack there in Boston, why this young man, Jeff Bauman, went to the Boston Bruins hockey game, and you can see pictures of him — go up on the internet.
And you can see pictures of him — he’s waving a flag, and he has two above knee amputations. Above knee amputations. Now wait a minute, the Jeff Bauman we saw initially had a below knee amputation and this is an above knee amputation.
I puzzled over that. How could that be, until I talked to a gentleman named Jim Fetzer who will be a guest in our programs and we said he was wearing a prosthesis, they put a prosthesis on him. There are even pictures where the prosthesis accidentally fell off, so they put the prosthesis on to give you the idea that it was a fresh amputation — it wasn’t, it was all contrived.
Look at the pictures, ladies and gentlemen — ask yourself, how could he have possibly have had a BK amputation in the initial pictures and now he has two AK amputations? We’re being lied to at every turn.”
Then, at 34:44:
“Of course I’ve tried to call the Spaulding Rehab Center on three occasions, and of course, I’ve tried to talk to the fellow there in charge of the press, and he always says if you’re from the media, and you certainly have a deadline, give us a call. We keep calling and leaving a number and we never get a call back. And the only reason I can think that that is because the last thing they want is for the media to know that this whole picture, this picture that was implanted in our minds, and there was articles in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal about Jeff Bauman who lost both legs there, this is all fraudulent. And if that is fraudulent, then what else is fraudulent?
And quite frankly, we don’t know, ladies and gentlemen, if they had this whole thing contrived. And I believe that this young man was an actor.“

The soldier murdered in a terrorist attack in Woolwich has been named as Drummer Lee Rigby, a "loving father" to his two-year-old son.The 25-year-old, of 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was killed near the Royal Artillery Barracks in front of shocked onlookers.
Witnesses said he was attacked by two men with a number of weapons, including knives and a meat cleaver, while they shouted the name of "Allah".
Drummer Rigby was described as an "extremely popular and witty soldier", who had a "larger than life personality" and was a passionate, lifelong Manchester United fan.
Tributes to the soldier, affectionately known as 'Riggers', each ended with the message: "Once a Fusilier, always a Fusilier."
Lieutenant Colonel Jim Taylor, Commanding Officer of the Second Fusiliers, described him as a "true warrior" * who served with distinction in Afghanistan.
"Drummer Rigby was a dedicated and professional soldier," he said. "He was a real character within the Second Fusiliers. Larger than life, he was at the heart of our Corps of Drums."
"Riggers was what every battalion needs," added Warrant Officer Ned Miller, Regimental Sergeant Major of the Second Fusiliers. "He was one of the Battalion's great characters - always smiling and always ready to brighten the mood."
Sky News understands Drummer Rigby, from Manchester, had served two tours in Afghanistan, the latest of which was in 2009.
His battalion is currently training in Cyprus but he was on attachment to the London headquarters as a recruiter.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said everyone had been "shocked and saddened" by Drummer Rigby's death.
"This was a senseless murder of a soldier who has served the army faithfully in a variety of roles including operational tours in Afghanistan," he said.
"Our thoughts today are with his family and loved ones who are trying to come to terms with this terrible loss."
General Sir David Richards, chief of defence staff, added: "Our first thoughts are with the soldier's family and close friends.
"It's always a tragedy but it's particularly poignant that it happened on the streets of our capital city."
One of the suspects in the murder of Drummer Rigby has been identified as Michael Adeboloja , a 28-year-old Londoner of Nigerian descent.
He and another man are being held under armed guard at separate hospitals in London.
They were both known to the security services but were assessed by MI5 as not posing a threat requiring "immediate intervention", Government sources said.
Police investigating the attack have been searching a flat in Greenwich and a house in Lincolnshire, believed to be connected to Adeboloja.
Witness accounts have continued to emerge about the moment terror returned to the streets of London.
One passer-by filmed Adeboloja holding a bloodied meat cleaver and saying: "We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."
"I apologise that women have had to witness this today but in our land our women have to see the same," he added. "You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don't care about you."
Ingrid Loyau-Kenned, a cub scout leader and mother-of-two, recalled the moment she confronted the alleged attackers and warned them: "You are going to lose."
Another witness, identified as James Heneghan, said the soldier had been attacked with kitchen knives like he was "a piece of meat".
"They were hacking at this poor guy, literally," he told LBC radio.
Meanwile, Prime Minister David Cameron chaired a second emergency meeting of the Government's Cobra committee.Speaking afterwards, he said: "The people who did this were trying to divide us. They should know something like this will only bring us together and make us stronger.
"One of the best ways of defeating terrorism is to go about our normal lives."
Elsewhere, the Muslim Council of Britain said it had received "reports of hate attacks and abuse faced by mosques and individual Muslims following the inexcusable and criminal murder".
The group called for solidarity between "all our communities, Muslim and non-Muslim".
Riot police had to contain an English Defence League demonstration in Woolwich, while two mosques were attacked.

English Defence League supporters clashed with police near Woolwich Arsenal railway station just hours after a soldier was butchered in the streets.Elsewhere, two men were arrested following separate attacks on mosques following the murder, during which two men were reported to have shouted "Allahu Akbar" - "God is greater" in Arabic.
In Woolwich, a group of between 75 and 100 men gathered at The Queen's Arms pub on Burrage Grove, where they sang nationalist songs.
EDL leader Stephen Lennon said: "Enough is enough. Our message is enough, enough. We have weak leaders. Our police, our leaders tip-toe around this issue.
"This issue is political Islam, political Islam that is spreading across this country."
Bottles and other missiles were thrown at police in a square near the station. Police tried to contain the protesters and control them using baton charges.
Nick Raynsford, the MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, told Sky News the EDL members should "go home and grow up".
"Behaving in the way that they did, trying to foment trouble and cause difficulties in a community that has just suffered such an appalling outrage is counter-productive," he said.
The crisis meeting chaired by Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday "recognised and commended" the response of the Muslim community following the murder.
A 43-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of attempted arson after reportedly walking into a mosque with a knife in Braintree, Essex.
Local MP Brooks Newmark tweeted: "Local mosque in Braintree attacked by man with knives and incendiary device. Man arrested. No one injured."
He added: "Just met with leaders of local mosque in Braintree which was attacked this evening. Thanked local police for their swift response."
Essex Police confirmed a 43-year-old from Braintree had been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and attempted arson after the incident in Silks Way at 7.15pm.
The secretary of the mosque, Sikander Saleemy, said: "The police said it's too early to try and link it to what happened in Woolwich, but those of us who were here feel that it was some sort of revenge attack. It was clear from the man's behaviour.
"We absolutely condemn what happened in Woolwich, but it had nothing to do with us. "It was an appalling act of terror - but it wasn't "Islamic" in any way. I wish it wasn't described like that, because sadly people will now start to blame Muslims."
A police spokesman said they were investigating the "full circumstances" and said "it would not be appropriate to speculate at this time".
In Kent, police were called to reports of criminal damage at a mosque in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, at 8.40pm.
A spokesman said a man was in custody on suspicion of racially-aggravated criminal damage.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has urged Londoners to go about their days in the normal way following the murder.
"It is completely wrong to blame this killing on the religion of Islam," he said.
"But it also equally wrong to try to draw any link between this murder and British foreign policy or the actions of British forces who are risking their lives abroad for the sake of freedom."

The letters 'EDL' have been found scrawled on an Islamic community centre which was destroyed in a suspicious fire in north London.Counter-terrorism officers with the Metropolitan Police are investigating whether the blaze in Muswell Hill was started deliberately in a racially-motivated attack.
Most of the roof of the two-storey Bravanese Centre in Coppetts Road, which was being used as a mosque, collapsed in the fire, which broke out at around 3.15am.
A police spokesman said the blaze is being treated as suspicious, adding that although no arrests have yet been made, a team of specialist officers would carry out "vigorous and thorough investigation".
Local resident Abu Bakar Ali said he was "appalled and deeply saddened" by the fire.
"Thankfully no one was injured ... but the effects of this fire will be felt deeply not just by the Somali community but throughout the entire neighbourhood and beyond," he added.
Although there has been no confirmation the fire is linked to the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich last month, there has been a significant increase in reports of attacks against Muslims since his death.
Faith Matters, an organisation that works to reduce extremism, said 11 mosques were targeted in the days after the killing.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Usher, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "I have spoken to community leaders and assured them that a thorough investigation is being conducted.
"The safety of our communities is always our priority and we are consulting widely, offering our support and reassurance.
"All communities can be confident that they have our support and I can be contacted personally to answer their concerns."
A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said it took 35 firefighters nearly an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control.
Daniel McInanny, who lives near the centre, told Sky News: "At around 3am, I heard a bang. At first I thought it was the bin men collecting the rubbish but when I looked out of the window, I saw an inferno. The whole building was alight."
No one was injured in the fire, although a woman living next door to the centre was treated for shock by paramedics.
Two neighbouring properties were evacuated.
Lynne Featherstone, the MP for nearby Hornsey and Wood Green, said the centre had been a "valuable source of advice, education and support" for the local community.
"I would like to express my sorrow," she added.

Police have praised the efforts of officers and the community as "heroic" after four people - including a policeman - were stabbed at a mosque.Three men were stabbed with a large combat knife by a fellow worshipper inside the Washwood Heath Muslim Centre in the Ward End area on Saturday night.
A group of worshippers confronted the attacker, who is not known to the mosque, before police arrived minutes later at around 11pm.
One officer used a taser on the suspect but it failed to have an affect on him, said Chief Superintendent Alex Murray. The policeman was knifed in the chest and stomach, around his stab-proof vest.
Chief Supt Murray said: "The work of those officers was heroic and the work of some of the people in the mosque assisting those officers was also heroic."
A 32-year-old man, believed to be of Somali origin, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody.
Reports suggest an argument may have broken out between members inside the building prior to the attack. Police said there was no information to suggest it was a hate crime.
Witness Arshad Mahmood told Sky News: "Everyone was frightened you know, it was so sudden and he had a proper knife with him.
"A few of us we went to stop him, one of the guys was strong enough to stop him. Then I held his hand - the guy who also tried to stop him had an injury on his thigh.
"After a few minutes, a police officer came and he also attacked the police officer."
Three victims, including the officer, suffered "serious" injuries but they are all said to be "stable". One worshipper was stabbed in the arm, one in the leg while the other had minor injuries.
Mohammed Shafiq, the leader of national Muslim organisation the Ramadhan Foundation, said a nearby resident overheard an argument coming from inside the mosque and believes it followed a dispute between members.
He said: "I have spoken to someone who lives a few doors down from the mosque and they described hearing an argument between some of the people inside the mosque.
"It escalated into violence and a police officer has been stabbed."
Mr Shafiq said: "People, anti-Muslim extremists, are going to try to take advantage of this - it's very serious that a police officer has been stabbed during duty.
"The aftermath of the brutal murder of Lee Rigby has led to an increase of attacks.
"The involvement of a police officer in this incident obviously causes more concern."
Officers were conducting patrols in the area in a bid to reassure local people. A cordon is in place while investigations continue at the mosque.
Chief Supt Murray told reporters: "There’s no connection with any other incidents that we can see at the moment, for example Woolwich or any other incidents around the country but we are exploring all lines of inquiry."
A number of mosques have been targeted since the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby close to his barracks in Woolwich, south London, last month.
The killing also sparked a large increase in anti-Muslim incidents in the days that followed, according to the organisation Faith Matters, which works to reduce extremism.
In what were believed to be reprisal attacks, the Islamic Somali Community Centre in Muswell Hill, north London, was burnt to the ground while the Grimsby Islamic Cultural Centre was also targeted by arsonists who threw petrol bombs.

Despite all medical efforts, a pregnant Muslim woman who was attacked by two Islamophobic men in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil on Thursday suffered a miscarriage and lost her baby, her lawyer said on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Muslim woman, who was four months pregnant, was physically attacked by two men. The attackers first tried taking her headscarf off and later cut off her hair and tore part of her clothing. After she screamed out that she was pregnant, one of the attackers started kicking her in the stomach.
She was taken to Argenteuil hospital where she underwent treatment for injuries.
Daily Mail reported that the police said that the men had shouted racist insults at the woman, saying that the veil was no longer acceptable in France.
"Her husband called me this this afternoon. She lost the baby," the lawyer told AFP news agency. He added that the family were devastated by the tragedy and would not be making any further comment.
French police officer involved in the investigation confirmed to AFP that she lost her baby.
The prosecutor for Pointoise, Yves Jannier, also said the woman had been kicked in the hip before she managed to flee.

A radical Muslim preacher wanted over an acid attack on two British teenagers in Zanzibar has been caught by police, according to reports.It was claimed that Sheikh Issa Ponda Issa was shot in the shoulder with a tear gas canister as he tried to escape from officers after being cornered near the Tanzanian coastal city of Dar es Salaam.
He was reported to be fighting for his life in hospital.
Friends Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both 18, continue to be treated in hospital in London and are said to be "well rested and comfortable".
Police said five men are being questioned by officers on the Indian Ocean island after the women were attacked by men on a motorbike as they walked along a road.
The young women were enjoying the last week of a trip as volunteer teachers to the predominantly Muslim island when the corrosive substance was thrown at them in an apparently unprovoked attack.
Zanzibar's assistant police commissioner Mkadam Khamis Mkadam told an east African newspaper: "They were accosted by two men riding a motorcycle ... they poured this liquid ... we suspect it was acid, before they ran away."
The women had planned to return to the UK in time to collect their A-level results next week, with Miss Trup hoping to study history at the University of Bristol while Miss Gee is considering the University of Leeds, it was reported.
Family members of both teenagers have been at their bedsides after they were flown home and taken to a burns unit.
Meanwhile, Tory MP Bill Cash, who sits on the all-party parliamentary group for Tanzania, has urged the Foreign Office to further upgrade its travel warning for tourists visiting both Zanzibar and Tanzania because it was "more than just an ordinary criminal event".
The Foreign Office updated its Tanzania travel advice page on Friday with details of the attack and warns British nationals to "take care" and read its travel advice.
Mr Cash said: "People need to be extra vigilant and the Foreign Office and High Commission need to make a very thorough evaluation of the threat, as these latest attacks would seem to be on religious grounds.
"The threat to tourists going to Tanzania and Zanzibar needs to be upgraded without doubt."

Four men are in police custody after being arrested in London as part of a pre-planned anti-terror operation.Counter-terrorism police detained the men at 7.10pm on Sunday during raids on addresses across the capital.
A statement from the Metropolitan Police said the men were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Two 25-year-old men were detained in Mansell Street, east London. A 28-year-old man was arrested in Westbourne Grove, west London.
The fourth man - aged 29 - was detained in Peckham Street, southeast London.
Officers conducted a search of six addresses as part of the pre-planned operation.
"These searches are ongoing. Two vehicles are also being searched," said a police spokesman.
"Officers from the MPS Firearms Unit were involved in these arrests. Public safety remains our overriding concern."
A man who witnessed the arrest on Westbourne Grove - a street lined with restaurants and shops in Notting Hill - said he saw two police vans and a police car at the scene.
He said: "There was quite a lot of police. There was quite a scene as I approached."
Sky's defence correspondent Alistair Bunkall described the operation as "significant".
"Sometimes these arrests are made as a pre-emptive measure very early on in any planning for a terrorism operation, and sometimes they are made because the feeling is a terrorist attack may be imminent, but we haven't been given those sort of details yet," he said.
"But S015 officers, from Counter Terrorism Command, and armed Met Police officers were involved, so it certainly was a big operation by the Met."

Terror Suspects Face Controversial Mosque Ban
The Home Office is considering banning terror suspects from visiting controversial mosques, Sky sources say.
Suspects subject to Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (Tpims) would not be allowed to worship at mosques on a Home Office's list, the sources said.
The plan could also clamp down on the amount of time they spent at mosques, the sources said.
The tougher restrictions would form part of a plan to further restrict terror suspects' freedoms after Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed escaped from a London mosque by dressing in a burka earlier this month.
Pressure is mounting on the Government to explain how the al Shabaab-linked suspect managed to escape surveillance despite being the subject of a Tpim.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond told Sky's Murnaghan programme that lessons needed to be learned from the case.
"The security services and the police face a huge challenge monitoring very large numbers of potential threat streams and we are acutely conscious that the terrorist only has to get lucky once - we have to get lucky every time," he said.
"Because of the large numbers of potential threats that we are monitoring and managing, it is inevitable that every now and again that one will slip through the net.
"When that happens we have to learn the lessons, we have to tighten the system."
Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper MP, said her Govermment counterpart Theresa May was "belatedly trying to close the stable door that she herself threw open" with the stricter measures.
"This Home Secretary repeatedly ignored warnings that ditching relocations would increase the risk that terror suspects would abscond," she said.
"After losing two out of the ten suspects she's been forced to admit there's a problem. But her hands are tied by her own legislation.
"If Theresa May has finally realised that she did the wrong thing by weakening terror controls, she should apologise. And David Cameron should take over the crucial decisions on terror suspects as its clear the Home Secretary can't be trusted to get it right."
A hunt involving the Metropolitan Police's counter terrorism command, MI5 and the UK Border Force has so far failed to track down Mohamed.
But he is not the first person to breach a Tpim since they were introduced to replace control orders in early 2012.
Last December, Ibrahim Magag, who is understood to have attended terrorist training camps in Somalia, absconded from a Tpim notice after ripping off his electronic tag. The police search for him is continuing.
Tpims were introduced in place of controversial control orders that individuals could be placed on indefinitely.
The control orders allowed forced relocation, curfews of up to 18 hours a day, electronic tagging and vetting of visitors.
The Coalition moved to the new system after sustained anger of the system, which some said amounted to virtual home arrest.
Tpims saw forced relocation scrapped, the curfews were replaced with a requirement to stay overnight in a house and they would no longer be indefinite and would instead need renewing every two years.
It has been revealed that before Mohamed escaped he had been twice remanded in custody for allegedly breaching controls imposed on him.
The 27-year-old was released from custody despite facing 20 charges for breaking the restrictions Tpim and the earlier control order.
Mohamed is currently seeking damages from the Government in a human rights legal challenge involving allegations of torture.

Amir Chowdury of Ilford, the suspected MI5/MI6 Pakistani informant (a Pakistani Muslim who bragged he had been sleeping with 18 women of all nationalities!) who was also my Martial Art teacher and who I made my business partner |(before I knew about his private life!) walked away with around £30,000 worth of our capital and my Honda Civic car and the POLICE DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! It was after 10 p.m. on July 8, 2009, when Sandra Mansour answered her cellphone to the panicked voice of her daughter-in-law, Nasreen. A week earlier, Nasreen and her husband, Naji Mansour, had been detained in the southern Sudanese city of Juba by agents of the country's internal security bureau. In the days since, Sandra had been desperately trying to find out where the couple was being held. Now Nasreen was calling to say that she'd been released—driven straight to the airport and booked on a flight to her native Kenya—but Naji remained in custody. He was being held in a dark, squalid basement cell, with a bucket for a bathroom and a dense swarm of mosquitoes that attacked his body as he slept. "You have to get him out of there," Nasreen said. But she was unfamiliar with Juba and could only offer the barest details about where they'd been held. "He's in a blue building. You've seen it. It's not far from your hotel."
Sandra remembered passing a blue warehouse ringed by tall, razor-wire-topped fences. She hung up and turned to her daughter, Tahani, who'd flown to Juba to assist in tracking down her brother: "We've gotta go look for Naji." They packed food, water, and bug spray in case they found him. Then Sandra and Tahani laced up their sneakers, retrieved a flashlight, and slipped out onto a pitch-dark, deserted road.
Sudan's long-running civil war had ended a few years earlier, and Juba, once a malarial backwater on the White Nile, was poised to become the capital of the world's newest nation, South Sudan. The city had grown into a boomtown, its expansion fueled by newly discovered oil and an influx of foreign aid. Shacks and half-built concrete structures lined its maze of narrow, trash-strewn streets, and entrepreneurs rented out converted storage sheds for as much as $100 per night. Sandra, a US government contractor, lived in one of them.
The upstart city had a Wild West atmosphere. Rifle- and grenade-wielding bandits occasionally stormed poorly guarded compounds, and violent muggings and carjackings were commonplace. It was not safe to drive after dark, let alone walk, but Sandra and Tahani were desperate. "It was a very crazy thing to do," Sandra later recalled. "But it was the first lead we had, and there was nothing that was gonna stop us."
"He said, 'We want you to work with us. You have what it takes. You're the perfect candidate.' This is the shit you see in movies."Sandra had grown up in Providence, Rhode Island; after leaving there on a backpacking trip in 1973, at age 21, she never stopped traveling. She later married a Sudanese economist, Ali Mansour, and together they lived and worked around the world, raising Naji and his three siblings to view their blue US passports as a ticket to a global life.
But that was before Naji landed in the crosshairs of the FBI and the family's comfortable expat existence started coming undone. For several months, Naji had been repeatedly interviewed by American authorities, detained and interrogated by Kenyan counterterrorism police, and ultimately forced into exile in Juba. Now he had vanished into a basement dungeon.
When Sandra and Tahani reached the blue warehouse, it appeared deserted. They circled it, then attempted to scale a back gate. When that failed, they shouted Naji's name into the lightless building.
Naji couldn't hear them. He was locked up about five miles away in another blue building, a Sudanese intelligence facility near a rocky outcropping called Witch Mountain. There, he was questioned repeatedly about whether he had ties to terrorism or Al Qaeda. The Sudanese interrogators threatened to kill him if he didn't tell them what he knew, and he could hear the screams of other prisoners being beaten.
Two weeks into his detention, Naji's jailers escorted him from his cell into a clean, bright room, where at last he saw a familiar face, a fellow American. It was an FBI agent he'd met with in the past. The agent told Naji that he could end his nightmare. "Help me help you," he said.
Naji first contacted me in April 2012, after I wrote a story about Yonas Fikre, an Oregon man who alleges that he was tortured in the United Arab Emirates after he refused to become an FBI informant. "I went through a similar ordeal," his email said.
Fikre's story fit a familiar pattern in which US citizens suspected of (often tangential) ties to terrorism were detained and questioned abroad by foreign security services—with evidence suggesting that American authorities orchestrated the detentions. This wasn't rendition, the controversial practice in which the CIA has shipped foreign nationals to allied countries where they were abused and tortured. Instead, American citizens were locked up abroad and interrogated by US agents in a manner that seemed designed to bypass their constitutional rights. Human rights advocates and civil libertarians have dubbed this practice "proxy detention."
The FBI acknowledges that foreign governments sometimes arrest Americans based on information the bureau provides. Here's how one FBI source explained it to me: If a guy the Saudi government suspected of terrorism traveled to the United States, we'd want to know. So it's only fair that we tip off the Saudis—or the Yemenis, Sudanese, or Egyptians—when an American suspected of terrorist ties enters their country.
What the bureau doesn't say is that since counterterrorism forces in many countries are funded and trained by the United States, the FBI's suggestions can sound a lot like orders—even when the suspects involved have never been charged with any crime.
"Often it has been US officials who do the real questioning, and sometimes the prisoners have been tortured and abused" by their foreign captors, says Hina Shamsi, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who works on the issue. "Unlawful detention and cruel treatment is wrong when the US government does it, and it's just as wrong if the United States asks another government to do it."
But as Naji discovered, the US government can do more than land you in prison overseas. It can reach deep into a family's life, upending relationships, destroying livelihoods, and leaving citizens stranded far from home without recourse or explanation.
NAJI WAS BORN IN San Diego in 1976, the first of four children, and his upbringing was a whirlwind tour of far-flung locales. As his father worked his way around the globe as an economic consultant to governments and businesses, Naji attended grade school on an American compound in Saudi Arabia and part of high school in a Crusades-era castle (complete with a moat) in Malta. When he was 20, the family visited Nairobi on a vacation, and they moved there for good later that year. All four Mansour children attended American colleges (Naji went to the University of Rhode Island for a year), and two of them now live in the United States. One of Naji's brothers joined the Marines and served two tours in Afghanistan.
Though he's spent most of his life abroad, Naji is an American by birth, by law, and by culture. He's a fan of the comedian Dave Chappelle, a rap aficionado—we had a lengthy conversation about the merits of Biggie Smalls versus Tupac Shakur—and a computer whiz.
Naji was raised Muslim, but he wasn't particularly religious as a child and didn't pray regularly until he was 18. He was more interested in pan-Africanism—in Naji's words, the idea "that a united Africa could be independent from foreign intervention, and people's lives would improve"—a popular school of thought among his professors at the United States International University in Nairobi. But in 1998, Naji dropped out of school and married a young Ugandan named Shamila. They moved to England and had a daughter, but without legal residency he couldn't find work beyond odd jobs, and Shamila eventually returned to Uganda and gave birth to their son. Naji moved back to Nairobi in April 2000 in hopes that Sandra, then working as a housing and travel coordinator for USAID (she supervised luggage handling during then-first lady Laura Bush's May 2007 visit), could set him up with a job at the US Embassy. In 2002, Naji and Shamila divorced. Soon after, he married Nasreen and they started a family together in Nairobi.

Naji spent 2008 working for a tech company in Dubai. During his stay, he occasionally invited friends from work and the mosque he attended to bunk at his mom's house—which the family dubbed "Hotel Sandra"—if they ever visited Nairobi. A week after returning home from Dubai, he got a call from a guy named Muhammad whom he barely remembered. "I got a couple of friends. Could you put them up?" Muhammad asked. "They're coming this week." Naji agreed, expecting more details, but Muhammad abruptly hung up.
A few days later, Naji's phone rang again. The men had arrived. "I was like, 'Uh...okay.'" He hopped into the family's old Mercedes—a memento of his father, who died in 2006—and drove to pick them up.
The two visitors, Bilal el-Berjawi and Mohamed Gamal Sakr, both 24, said they were grad students who had traveled to Kenya to study the farmers who grow miraa (also known as khat), a mild amphetamine that's legal there. But they seemed to do little other than hang around. They watched the Mansours' seven tortoises trudge around the backyard. They prayed. After a week, Naji gently inquired when Berjawi and Sakr would be moving on. They told him they were waiting for their families to wire some money to continue their travels and research.
Around 2 p.m. on February 23, 2009, a bit more than two weeks into the pair's visit, dozens of armed men surrounded the house. Naji and Nasreen were out. The family's maid, Violet Mugasiali, was home with their young daughters. "All of a sudden the bell started ringing nonstop," Mugasiali remembered. The men said they were with Kenya's counterterrorism police, a special American-funded unit. She called Naji and Nasreen as the police burst into the compound, arresting Berjawi and Sakr and confiscating computers belonging to Naji.
Nasreen rushed home while Naji contacted Al-Amin Kimathi, a prominent lawyer and the head of Kenya's Muslim Human Rights Forum. Naji had volunteered for Kimathi's organization, where he helped to investigate the detention and rendition of Muslims who had been arrested in Kenya as they fled Ethiopia's US-backed invasion of neighboring Somalia. Some of the detainees were militants affiliated with the Islamic Courts Union, which spawned al-Shabaab, the terrorist group that pledged fealty to Al Qaeda in 2012. But many were simply refugees attempting to escape the violence.
Now Naji called on Kimathi for a favor. Since he didn't have a Kenyan passport, he was worried he might be deported; Kimathi helped him obtain an official document saying he could stay. Then Naji turned himself in for interrogation. (Nasreen was also arrested; she was held for 30 hours before being released without charges.)
The Kenyan police told Naji that Berjawi and Sakr had been plotting a terrorist attack—perhaps targeting the Westgate, Nairobi's fanciest mall. (The two men were deported to the United Kingdom, where they had grown up, but soon returned to Africa. In 2010, the UK revoked their citizenship for alleged ties to terrorism, and both were later killed by US drone strikes in Somalia—where, the British government said, they had joined al-Shabaab.)
Naji was questioned about his ties to the would-be terrorists, whom he told his interrogators he barely knew. They also confronted him with terrorism-related files that were discovered on his computers. Some were mundane, such as research papers and think tank studies about Islamic extremism, but others were more suspicious, like martyrdom videos and al-Shabaab propaganda. Naji said that he was no terrorist, but was fascinated by the causes of terrorism and curious about how the religious doctrine of jihad was used to justify it; in his spare time, he spent hours doing online research.
"I'm telling you, you might get hit by a car. That is not a threat. That is a solid piece of advice. But you don't want to take it."Following two days of questioning, the Kenyan authorities let Naji go. Sandra suggested that he reach out to the US Embassy, where she had many contacts, to report what had happened and clear up any suspicions about his ties to Berjawi and Sakr. She connected him with a diplomatic security officer named Michael Fogarty. When they later met at the embassy, Fogarty asked Naji if he would "consider speaking to some law enforcement." Then he brought in a heavyset, blondish man he introduced as Jeffrey Roberts, the embassy's deputy regional security officer. Roberts, in turn, ducked out and came back with two FBI agents. The shorter, dark-haired one introduced himself as Mike Jones. (This is a pseudonym. The FBI told Mother Jones that, because of the agent's role in the "recruitment of sources" overseas for counterterrorism work, revealing his identity would put him at risk.)
Naji recounted the story of how Berjawi and Sakr had come to stay with him, but the agents asked few questions about them. Instead, Jones grilled Naji about Kimathi, his acquaintance from the Muslim Human Rights Forum, and inquired about one of Nasreen's distant cousins, a man named Omar Awadh Omar. (Omar is currently being prosecuted in Uganda for helping orchestrate the 2010 bombings in Kampala that targeted soccer fans watching the World Cup finals.) Jones asked Naji whether he had ever brought "guns, money, or people for violence" to Somalia or other countries. Naji said no. After about an hour, the conversation wrapped up; Naji agreed to sit down with Roberts again later that week.
Roberts showed up to their next meeting "in his shades, looking like Top Gun," Naji recalled. And he had a proposition. "He said, 'We want you to work with us. You have what it takes. You're the perfect candidate.' I asked him, 'What exactly are you talking about?' It was very surreal. This is the shit you see in movies. I was laughing."
But Roberts wasn't joking. "He said, 'We can give you rewards for information, or we can put you on full time. But that would require a continuous flow of information.'" Naji understood that his houseguests had placed him under a "cloud of suspicion," he later told me. But Roberts didn't seem interested in that anymore. "Mostly, it was 'We need your help,'" Naji said.
It's not hard to see why the US government would view Naji as an ideal informant. He is religious, conservative, and speaks English and Arabic. He's calm under pressure. He had crisscrossed the globe as a volunteer escort for refugees being resettled through the International Organization for Migration. When he traveled, he went to mosques and counted on the hospitality of strangers to find a bed for the night, and through this he had made connections with dozens of other religious Muslim men around the world.
This is precisely the kind of community that the FBI is trying to track and infiltrate. The bureau's network of paid informants has expanded rapidly since 9/11, and now includes more than 15,000, rivaling the scale of the J. Edgar Hoover era. A guy like Naji—an expatriate working in countries where terrorists operate—would be a real catch.
But to someone not facing criminal charges, the FBI doesn't have much to offer by way of enticement. "The problem for many American Muslims who have been approached by the FBI to become informants is that they aren't involved in criminal conspiracies and don't have relationships with criminals," says Mike German, an ex-FBI agent who now works for the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University. "Instead, they are being asked to spy broadly against their religious community. That creates a conundrum because the person may be perfectly willing to help the FBI fight terrorism but simply has no information to provide."
Naji told Roberts he was planning to move to Juba, where his mother had taken a job with a company called Management Systems International that did work for USAID. He hoped to launch a business there selling rugged laptops. "We could use you there, too," Roberts said.
"No, man," Naji replied. Spying was "not something I want to play around with," especially in a country like Sudan. "This is Africa. There's no law for me here."
Page 1 of 2NextSix weeks after the raid, the Mansour family headed to the Nairobi airport to fly to Uganda for a visit with Naji's ex-wife and their children. When Naji handed his passport to a security officer, she glanced at her computer screen, stared at him, and asked, "What did you do?" Kenyan security officers detained the family for several hours, releasing them just before their flight took off.
When the family returned five days later, Kenyan airport police questioned Naji again. "The deputy immigration officer said, 'We have nothing wrong with you, but we have a directive not to let you in,'" Naji recalled. Soon, Fogarty and Jones showed up at the airport. The FBI agent reiterated the US government's desire that Naji become an informant. Naji once again declined.
He spent three nights at the airport, and when it became clear that he would not be allowed to enter Kenya, Nasreen brought him some clothes and his laptop samples and said goodbye. Then Naji boarded a plane to go stay with his mother in Juba. There, he buried himself in building his laptop business. "We kept thinking things were going to blow over," Sandra said.
In late June 2009, Sandra took a business trip to Kenya, and stopped by the US Embassy to get more pages added to her passport, for all the visas needed for her international travels. She was told there was a "hit" on her passport that needed to be cleared in Washington. A few days later, she was informed her passport would be released if she'd meet with the FBI first. So on Monday, June 29, Sandra sat down with FBI agent Mike Jones. "He asked, 'Where's Naji now?'" she recalled. "I said, 'He's with me in Juba.'"
The next morning, June 30, Naji and Nasreen—who had come to visit her husband in Juba while Sandra was in Nairobi looking after their children—were about to go out for breakfast when they noticed a man peering through the window. Naji opened the door to find two men in suits, sweating in the heat, with guns on their hips. "One of them looked like African James Bond," Naji told me. "And I say, 'Yes, hello?' And they're like, 'Naji Mansour?' and I'm like, 'Yes.' And they just came in." The agents of the South Sudan Security Bureau asked Naji to bring Nasreen out, and then they took the couple's phones and laptops and hustled them into separate unmarked cars.
When I asked the FBI about why Naji and Nasreen were arrested a day after Sandra told Jones of Naji's whereabouts, a spokeswoman told me in an email that the timing "is, in fact coincidence." But there are indications that it may not have been. "Sandra, I'm not supposed to be telling you this, but this is coming from your people," Sandra says a top Sudanese official told her. A former US diplomat who was stationed in Juba at the time told me that US officials there spoke openly of Naji's detainment and said he would be freed if he cooperated with the FBI.
The agents took Naji and Nasreen to the National Intelligence building, where Naji was placed in a basement cell; later, he heard Nasreen sobbing. One of the guards was trying to remove her headscarf—most South Sudanese are not Muslim—but she prevailed. Then the lights went out. Nasreen was still whimpering in a cell down the hall.
In the days that followed, the couple was questioned about their intentions in the country, whether they had ties to terrorism, and the contents of Naji's laptops. One of them contained materials similar to those that had raised eyebrows in Kenya. Nasreen was finally freed after eight days and put on a flight back to Nairobi. No charges were ever filed, nor was she given any reason for her detention.
The weekend after Nasreen's release, guards escorted Naji into an interrogation room. Soon, a blond State Department official entered.
"Do you remember Mike Jones—you met him in Nairobi?" she asked.
"Yeah," Naji replied.
"Would you be willing to see him?" the diplomat inquired. That was fine by him, Naji said, and to his surprise Jones and another FBI agent, Peter Smith (whose real name also has been withheld at the FBI's request), strolled in moments later. Smith said he believed that Naji had done nothing wrong and wasn't involved with terrorism, but told him that the FBI needed Naji to tell them something useful so they could advocate on his behalf with the Sudanese. "Quid pro quo, Naji. Quid pro quo," Jones chimed in.
"Every time I try to cooperate with the FBI, I get deeper into shit. I'm a citizen. They're supposed to have my back, and it's the exact opposite."Naji racked his brain. Then he remembered that Muhammad, the guy who had arranged for Berjawi and Sakr to stay with him, had once called his office phone in Dubai—a number that very few people called. Perhaps the FBI could pull the phone records and locate Muhammad. But Jones was not interested in Muhammad. He wanted to know about Omar, Nasreen's distant cousin—the one who'd later be charged in the Uganda World Cup bombings. Naji said he didn't think Omar was the "type" to join Al Qaeda, but Jones didn't seem to buy it. "All right, Naji, good luck," the FBI agent said. "I hope everything works out for you, buddy."
Then, 37 days after he'd been arrested and three weeks after his conversation with the FBI, Naji was brought upstairs again. A Sudanese officer told him he was free to go, so long as he stayed in the country for the next 30 days and didn't talk to the media.
After his release, the director of South Sudan's Security Bureau penned a memo to the local minister of internal affairs briefing him on Naji's case. "The accused has been very much willing to know in-depth about Terrorism and Islamic Jihad," he wrote in the document, which was obtained by Mother Jones. "Thus, Mr. Naji is believed to have much interest in Terrorism activities, in fundamentalism and Islamic teachings. Whether that could lead to joining such activities or help in one way or another he will just remain a suspect that would require trailing."
A month later, Naji moved to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, where his late father's family had lived. Nasreen and their children later joined him there. He began to think his problems were over. Then, in October 2009, Jones got in touch. "I am heading back to Africa in the near future," he wrote in an email. "I'd be willing to stop by area, or Khartoum, and meet if you have the time." Naji replied that he wanted to talk on the phone before committing. He planned to tape their conversation.
When Jones called a month later, Naji turned on his phone's recording app and told the agent that he believed US officials had ordered his detention. (Clips of the conversation follow; you can listen to the entire recording and read a transcript here.)
"We had 100 percent nothing to do with that," Jones responded, according to a copy of the recording that Naji gave me. "It runs counter to everything that we do and that we stand for."
"I just want normalcy for my family," Naji said. "'Cause I think they deserve it. 'Cause it's been a screwed-up year, let me tell you." Jones pressed for a meeting, and they agreed to talk again the next morning.
Naji recorded their subsequent conversation, too. This time Peter Smith was on the line with Jones, and the collegial tone of their previous interactions was gone. The agents again asked for a meeting, but Naji declined. Ever since he had first told his story to US officials, he said, his life had been thrown into chaos. "There's scrutiny on your mom," Jones finally said. "...That's not going to go away unless we sit down and get down to business."
Smith jumped in, telling Naji that if he refused, "a series of events is going to be put into motion. And once you put it into motion, honestly I, I'm out of it. I honestly do not care. I'm going home, you know, I got a vacation to plan. My life goes on. Yours might change. And it's not going to, it might not be necessarily to your liking." He added: "I'm telling you, you might get hit by a car—that is not a threat. That is a solid piece of advice. But you don't want to take it."
(The FBI refused to comment on the bureau's attempt to recruit Naji as an informant, nor would it comment on his taped conversations with Jones and Smith or whether any misconduct on their part had occurred.)
Four days later, on November 17, a State Department security officer visited the offices of Management Systems International in Juba. Sandra was fired the same day—less than a week after the company had renewed her contract for another year. She was told her position had been eliminated, but MSI posted the same job a month later. Stefanie Frease, one of Sandra's supervisors, told me the dismissal came at the behest of the US government.
"We all thought she was blackballed," said Inez Andrews, a former foreign-service officer working in the US compound in Juba at the time. "It's awful she hasn't been able to clear this up, that she's being held hostage to a system that was trying to extract information."
In a statement, USAID maintained that "decisions regarding the termination of employees...are ultimately made and executed by contractors themselves." And an FBI spokeswoman said the bureau "made no recommendations in regards to Sandra Mansour's employment status."
But Sandra's ordeal wasn't over. When she tried to return to her home in Nairobi in 2011, she was blocked from entering the country, just as Naji had been. An immigration official told her, she recalled, "If the Americans don't want you here, you ain't coming in." She was finally allowed entry to Kenya last December, when American nationals were evacuated there after South Sudan descended into violence.
Other members of Naji's family have been targeted, too. In 2011, Naji's sister, Tahani, was detained at the Nairobi airport for three days. "I've heard, 'It's your people'"—that the US is behind her family's troubles with customs officials—"more times than I can count," she told me. "I go to airports now and there's this constant sense of trepidation. Am I gonna make it? Am I gonna get locked up again?"
"As a family we have always been mobile and traveling our whole lives, and as a result completely took it for granted," she told me. "The removal of the liberty to travel was crippling."
One of Naji's brothers says he is frequently questioned about Naji when he crosses an international border. The other, a Marine veteran based in Virginia, was visited by members of the Navy's criminal investigative service, who grilled him about Naji. The FBI even interviewed Naji's uncle and aging grandmother in Rhode Island in 2009.
"They didn't get to me, so they had to target my family," says Naji.
On September 21, 2013, members of al-Shabaab, armed with assault rifles and grenades, stormed the Westgate, the upscale mall that Bilal el-Berjawi and Mohamed Gamal Sakr had allegedly plotted to bomb four years earlier. Over the next three days, at least 72 people (including the attackers) were killed and the mall was almost entirely destroyed.
I had just left Nairobi—where I had visited Tahani at the Mansour family's home, just a few miles from the mall—the day before. As the news broke, I was sipping white tea with Naji in the lobby of the Acropole Hotel, a Khartoum landmark with a Raiders of the Lost Ark vibe and a cartoonishly large safe in its office. The hotel's prime clientele are foreign archaeologists (Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt); it's also a popular haunt for journalists, as the bumper stickers—CNN, BBC, CBC—on the lobby window attest.
Naji was skinny and 5-foot-7. He had close-cropped black hair with a sprinkling of gray, stylish glasses, and a mustacheless beard that he absentmindedly stroked when he grew sad or worried. He spoke quietly and slowly, telling me about his passion for organic food and his interest in "open-source ecology," in which people build their own tractors and plows from plans available on the internet.
Sudan, Naji told me, had become his prison. He felt trapped and helpless. He was no longer welcome in Kenya, and he feared what might happen if he set foot outside Sudan, believing he might be detained—and possibly tortured—at the behest of the US government. The experience "made me scared of traveling," Naji said. "What happens if I go to a US-friendly country or pass through a US-friendly country?"
The older two of his and Nasreen's four children now live with his mother-in-law in Nairobi (it has better schools than Khartoum), where he cannot visit them. He hasn't seen his son and daughter from his first marriage in three years. And Naji's lifelong ambition—to travel the world with his kids, "doing all the stuff with my children that my father did with me"—is blocked by fear.
Over and over during my time in Khartoum, Naji assured me that he had no ties to terrorism. I asked him about the terrorism-related files that had been found on his computer and what had kept him from following his interest in jihad down a path toward violence, as has been the case with some other conservative Muslims who have immersed themselves in extremist dogma online. "Knowledge" of Islam, he replied, explaining that he has had a long-standing "intellectual" interest in jihad and political Islam. I pressed Naji on whether he thought killing civilians was justified in certain situations. "What happened at Westgate is forbidden," he told me. "Am I a sleeper cell? I like to sleep a lot!"
In fact, it was a notorious act of terrorism that first prompted Naji's curiosity about jihad—Al Qaeda's 1998 bombing of the US Embassy in Nairobi. Among the 213 people killed in the blast was his sister's best friend, Jay Bartley, who liked to shoot hoops with Naji and his brothers. Bartley's father, Julian, the consul general, was also killed in the attack.
"The following days were a haze," Tahani told me. "I don't think I ate anything other than coffee for three days. I burned a huge chunk of my hair off with the hair dryer just in a daze." Naji, then 22, saw his sister's despair. Yet when he went to the mosque, some of the men there spoke of the attack as a legitimate act of jihad, Naji remembered. "I honestly had no idea what to think," he said. "I became very curious about how something like that could be justified under Islam."
When Naji moved to London in 1999, he fell in with a group of conservative Pakistani men. Once drawn to secular pan-Africanism, he became more devout and enthusiastic about Islam as a political solution to the world's problems. "I started learning that Islamic systems were behind some of the greatest empires," he said. He educated himself about the structure of an Islamic state—how banking and finance would be conducted, how the poor would be cared for. "'Oh wow,' I thought, 'something other than democratic socialism and capitalism'—it was very appealing to me, liberating."
Tahani didn't view her brother's increasing interest in political Islam and jihad as unusual, even in light of what had happened to the Bartleys. "He was totally open about it," she told me. Jihad "was just the next topic" for Naji. "He really takes it upon himself to properly look into things through multiple sources." She told me her brother had once been fascinated by Sufism, Islam's more mystical branch. "Naji's approach to the whole jihad thing was similar to that. There was an enigma about it and he wanted to be informed. That's what he does—he teaches himself."
As we watched Kenyan police and military units respond to the mall attack, Naji called his mother-in-law, who works in a hair salon near the Westgate. She told him that her building had been evacuated and she had fallen running away, but she and the kids were fine. Then he rolled his prayer mat out on the hotel balcony and prayed. Later we took an ancient minibus to Omdurman, Khartoum's sister city across the Nile, and sat on the sagging couches in Naji's apartment and talked until the muezzin sang the sunrise call to prayer from the minaret across the street.
"Even if I was guilty, there's a process," he told me.
Though he spent much of his life abroad, Naji had never doubted his rights as an American citizen. But the experience with the FBI had made him deeply distrustful of his government. "Every time I try to cooperate with the FBI, I get deeper into shit. I'm a citizen. They're supposed to have my back, and it's the exact opposite. You shouldn't expect this from the beacon of democracy."
On my last day in Khartoum, Naji and Sandra picked me up at the Acropole. We drove for 30 minutes to the outskirts of the city, where the US Embassy complex sits on a desolate road near a turn in the Blue Nile. Naji needed to renew his passport. He was nervous—he had told Nasreen that if he didn't return within two hours, she should notify the press and local authorities. A security officer took our phones, and then we followed a covered walkway that cut across the bright green lawn.
We stepped into a scene that would not have been out of place in a municipal building in Dayton, Ohio. It was just before 8:15 a.m. and a television mounted on the wall was tuned to the Armed Forces Network, which was showing The Doctors. Five numbered windows lined the wall. A table was covered with old magazines, and official portraits of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and John Kerry peered down from the wall. Soon, a disembodied voice asked Naji to report to window one. He handed in his form and his passport. As we waited, 10 or 12 other people renewing passports came and went. Finally, after about an hour, a voice announced over a loudspeaker, "Excuse me, Mr. Mansour? Can you go to window number six?" There was no window, only a soundproof door, marked "INTERVIEW ROOM."
Inside, a window looked through to another room, but its shades were drawn. After a few minutes, the shades rose and two State Department officials were on the other side: Chris McVay, an assistant regional security officer at the embassy, and a woman who introduced herself as Amelia Sanders, the second secretary for regional, political, and economic affairs. They didn't mention any of Naji's previous troubles, although they brought up his time in Juba and travels throughout Africa. The diplomats said they were interested in hearing Naji's thoughts about the countries he had visited. Before they let him go to collect his passport, Sanders asked if perhaps they could meet again sometime soon.

The terror threat level has been raised from substantial to severe, Home Secretary Theresa May has said.This means an attack is deemed to be "highly likely", but there is no intelligence to suggest one is imminent.
Ms May said the increase was because of the threat from militant groups in Iraq and Syria, where the Islamic State fighters have seized large swathes of territory.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK was in the midst of a "generational struggle" against a "poisonous ideology" and said IS poses a "greater and deeper threat to our security than we have known before".
He said the intelligence and security services believed at least 500 Britons have gone to fight in Syria and potentially Iraq.
Mr Cameron revealed new legislation would be introduced to make it easier to take passports away from people would would travel abroad to fight.
Speaking before the PM's statement, Mrs May said: "The increase in the threat level is related to developments in Syria and Iraq where terrorist groups are planning attacks against the West.
"Some of those plots are likely to involve foreign fighters who have travelled there from the UK and Europe to take part in those conflicts."
She went on to add: "We face a real and serious threat in the UK from international terrorism.
"I would urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police."
Police forces say they will increase their patrols in response to the raising of the terror threat, which is set by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC).
The JTAC's decision comes amid growing concern about hundreds of aspiring British jihadis travelling to Iraq and Syria and the murder of American journalist James Foley.
Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the UK's most senior police officer, said Scotland Yard is ready for an influx in case large numbers of homegrown extremists return at the same time.
National Policing Lead for Counter-Terrorism, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, said: "We need communities and families to bring to our attention anyone they perceive may be vulnerable, a danger or escalating towards terrorism.

There are five levels of threat: critical (an attack is expected imminently), severe (an attack is highly likely), substantial (an attack is a strong possibility), moderate (an attack is possible but not likely) and low (an attack is unlikely).

Hello all,
I do not claim to be an expert on 7/7, but I think it is fair to say that few UK sceptics think 7/7: The Ripple Effect is correct, while most think the truth is probably a great deal murkier, as Nafeez Ahmed thought in his book on 7/7.
From this perspective this article in yesterday's Daily Mail is pretty good I think. It fails to explicitly mention MI6 and the vanishing 7/7 ringleader but raises a question over this area too. It points to the issue of what explosives were used (for the first week it was high grade military explosives) and where they were (a glaring gap in the BBC account which was unable to produce any evidence refuting reports they were under the trains).
One key question is: where did the BBC Conspiracy Files get their apparent CCTV videos, when Sue in the Mail is saying none have ever been released? One possibility is that Sue is not aware of the Commons report which released (at least to the BBC) more picture evidence, and which I drew attention to on this list a few weeks ago. It would be amazing even by BBC crap standards if the videos they presented were not taken on the day but some other time.
Politically, I would suggest the main thrust should now be that any enquiry must be overseen by relatives of the dead victims (not "survivors" - it is too easy to infiltrate fake survivors) and the Muslim community (not the sort of CIA Muslims the BBC manages to dig up to support the various New Labour wars). It should have unfettered access to all MI6 operatives and files and all allied intelligence services must produce relevant documentation and personnel on pain of limits on future co-operation if they fail.
The Niger forgeries, authenticated by the Blair government, were what swung American public opinion to back the invasion of Iraq, they were the only hard evidence to support the false accusation that Iraq was planning to acquire nuclear weapons. When MI6 authenticated the Niger forgeries for Blair, exposed as fakes in a morning by the UN when they finally saw them, it was either an act of gross incompetence or more likely grave criminality.
