Basheer - Together or separate the river will flow unturnable!

"At 1 minute and 29 seconds is the lyric "we are a river flowing..." To me this means we are all mingled and united we are strong!"

Once upon a time there was
Irish Ways and Irish Laws
Villages of Irish blood
Waking to the morning
Waking to the morning

Then the Vikings came around (1)
Turned us up and turned us down
Started building boats and towns
They tried to change our living
tried to change our living

Cromwell and his soldiers came (2)
Started centuries of shame
But they could not make us turn (3)
We are a river flowing
We're a river flowing

Again, again the soldiers came
Burnt our houses stole our grain
Shot the farmers in their fields

Working for living
Working for a living

800 years we have been down (4)
The secret of the water sound
Has kept the spirit of a man
Above the pain descending
Above the pain descending

Today the struggle carries on
I wonder will I live so long
To see the gates being opened up (5)
To a people and their freedom
A people and their freedom

Once upon a time there was
Irish Ways and Irish Laws
Villages of Irish blood
Waking to the morning
Waking to the morning

Notes

(1)
The first documented Viking landing took place in 795. Until the
Anglo-Norman invasion in 1170 the Vikings would play an important
role in Ireland, both politically and economically. They created trade
routes, founded kingdoms, and built the first towns in Ireland,
including Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

(2)
Oliver Cromwell landed in Ireland in August 1649 at the head of a
huge army, by May 1650 he had crushed opposition in all but the West.
(By 1652 the Irish population had fallen to .7 m. In 1641 it had
been 1.5 m.
By 1660 .5 m cattle were being exported annually to
England.)

(3)
Both Cromwell's and subsequent colonisation campaigns used the twin
techniques of "planting" English and Scotish settlers and forcing
some locals to change or "Turn" their religion to the Protestant
faith.
So here he uses the ambiguity of the term "turn" to echo both
the image of the unbowed Irish peasant and a metaphor for Irish
History flowing like a un-turnable river.

(4)
Since the first English invasion in 1170

(5)
"Gates" here evokes both images of the besieged walled cities of the
17th century and also of the present day prison camps in the North
of Ireland
which at the time the song was being written (in the late
1970's early 1980's) were the subject of much political campaigning
including Hunger Strikes by the inmates.

So what is it to me if I can even own this world?

Sahir Ludhianvi, the writer of this song was sent to jail by Congress Government. He criticised the govenment on their promise after independance.

Pyaasa 1957 (THIRST)

In 2005, Pyaasa was rated as one of the 100 best films of all time by Time Magazine, which called it "the soulfully romantic of the lot." On the occasion of Valentine's Day 2011 Time magazine has declared it as one of the top 10 romantic movies of all time. Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. It is also surmised that the story is based on the life of film's lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi who had failed affair with poet and writer Amrita Pritam. The film was originally titled Pyaas (thirst), but Guru Dutt later changed it to Pyaasa to better describe the film.

Yeh Mehlon, Yeh Takhton, Yeh Taajon Ki Duniya,

Yeh  Insaan Ké Dushman Samaajon Ki Duniya,

Yeh Daulat Ké Bhuukhe Riwaajon Ki  Duniya,

Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaé To Kya Hain?

This world of palaces, thrones, and crowns
This world of societies that hate humanity
This world of those hungry for material wealth
So what is it to me if I can even own this world?

Har Ek Jism  Ghayal, Har Ek Ruuh Pyaasi,
Nigaahon Mein Uljhan, Dilon Mein Udaasi,
Yeh  Duniya Hai Ya Aalam-E-Badhawasi,
Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaayeh To Kya  Hain?

Each body can feel pain, each soul thirst.
With confused eyes and hearts full of sorrow
Is this the world or the realm of the senseless?
So what is it to me if I can even own this world?

Jahaan Ek Khilauna Hai Insaan Ki Hasti,
Yeh Basti Hai  Murdaa-Parasto Ki Basti,
Yahaan To Jeevan Se Hai Maut Sasti,
Yeh  Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaayeh To Kya Hain?

In this world where a human being is only a toy
It is a place that worships death
Where it is cheaper to die than to live
So what is it to me if I can even own this world?

Jawaani Bhatakti Hai  Badkaar Ban Kar,
Jawaa Jism Sajte Hein Baazaar Ban Kar,
Yahaa  Pyaar Hota Hai Vyapaar Ban Kar,
Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaayeh To Kya  Hain?
Here youth wanders about in search of evil pleasures
Young bodies adorn and sell themselves in the market
Where love is treated as a commodity
So what is it to me if I can even own this world?

Yeh Duniya Jahaan Aadmi Kuchh Nahin Hai
Wafaa Kuchh Nahin Dosti Kuchh Nahin Hai
Yeh Duniya Jahaan Aadmi Kuchh Nahin Hai
Wafaa Kuchh Nahin Dosti Kuchh Nahin Hai

This world where human life is worthless
Where loyalty has no value and friendship is meaningless
This world where humans have no value
Loyalty means nothing and friendship means nothing

Jahan Pyaar Ki Kadr Hi Kuchh Nahin Hai
Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye, To Kya Hai ?
Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye, To Kya Hai ?

Where the fate of love is only total ruin
So what is it to me if I can even own this world?
So what is it to me if I can even own this world?

Jalaa Do Ise, Phoonk Daalo  Yeh Duniya,
Mere Saamne Se Hata Lo Yeh Duniya,
Tumhaari Hai Tum Hi  Sambhaalo Yeh Duniya,
Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaayeh To Kya Hain?
Burn it down, set it all on fire this kind of world!
Remove this world from my sight!
It is yours, so you take care of that world!
What is it to me if I can even own this world?

Michael Jackson You are not alone

Live Munich

Another day has gone
I'm still all alone
How could this be
You're not here with me
You never said goodbye
Someone tell me why
Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

But you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
But you are not alone

'Lone, 'lone
Why, 'lone

Just the other night
I thought I heard you cry
Asking me to come
And hold you in my arms
I can hear your prayers
Your burdens I will bear
But first I need your hand
Then forever can begin

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
That you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
For you are not alone

Whisper three words and I'll come runnin'
And girl you know that I'll be there
I'll be there

You are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay
For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay

For you are not alone
For I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart

For you are not alone...

Peace be upon you!
How are you dear Basheer?
I understand my communication skills are lacking, that is why I use songs as a device. Sometimes I am filled with dread of rejection and abandonment, but not today.
I AM an emotional being & I believe in you, I love you and that is unchangeable as you know well, insha'Allah.
I wish you a fulfilling New Year of all the best.

Yours,
Kaamilah

  1. Peace be upon you. You are always teaching me Basheer! I " heard this song with my heart" and now I understand with the logical side of my head. Because you took the time to research. You share yourself and your time so generously and I am grateful, with love and respect, katebates (Dadi Kaamilah)
