Irish singer Sinead O'Connor was known for her controversial career and her hit song "Nothing Compares 2 U" (via Biography). Although she still performed and made music until her death in 2023, it's clear that her sole focus became her four children toward the end of her life (per RSVP Live). According to The Mirror, the singer was married four times and was the mother of Jake, Roisin, Shane, and Yeshua. Jake, her firstborn, is the product of her first marriage to John Reynolds, a music producer (via Smooth Radio). After the birth of her second child, Roisin, O'Connor endured a custody battle with her ex, journalist John Waters, in 1995.
Per the Daily Mail, her third child, Shane, whom she shared with musician Donal Lunny, would be born in 2004. In 2006, she had her final child, Yeshua, with Frank Bonadio. In January 2022, O'Connor announced on social media that her son Shane had gone missing and was asking for his safe return (via People). She stated that her "world would collapse" without him and pleaded with him to not harm himself.

The Guardian reports that on January 8, authorities confirmed that 17-year-old Shane O'Connor had died. His remains had been found in Bray, a town outside of Dublin. The New York Post writes that the teen had "escaped suicide watch" shortly before going missing. As reported by the Daily Mail, Sinead O'Connor later revealed that he took his own life by hanging. "'I have now formally identified the remains of my son, Shane," she tweeted.
The singer took to social media to write about her son's death (via People). "My beautiful son, Nevi'im Nesta Ali Shane O'Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God," she tweeted. "May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace."

In a series of tweets posted in January 2022, Sinead O'Connor claimed that her son had planned his suicide in advance — and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), which discharged him at the time, was aware of such plans.
"A month ago Shane was brought to CAMHS after vanishing leaving suicide notes including detailed funeral plans," she wrote (per the Daily Mail)." They discharged him. Said he had no plans. When objections were raised by the adult with him she was told 'planning a funeral is no different to planning a wedding.' ... I'm here to tell CAMHS that planning my child's funeral is nothing remotely similar to planning his wedding. Which will now never happen."
According to the Irish Examiner, Shane ended up in Tallaght Hospital — though it's unclear whether he was there voluntarily or not. Child and family agency Tusla, his legal guardian at the time, was alerted, and though Ireland's national police service was contacted after, he was ultimately found dead.
Sinead blamed Tusla, CAMHS, and Tallaght Hospital for their purported negligence. According to The Scottish Sun, she threatened a lawsuit against the latter, saying she didn't understand how a "traumatized young person" like her son could have gone missing. She added that the hospital was "refusing to take any responsibility."

Shane O'Connor, like his mother, had a way with words. As reported by The Sun, Sinead O'Connor shared one of her son's works — which she noted is in 6/8 tempo — in 2021, shortly before his death: "The blood never ends / The failure of men / Is to pick up a knife as quick as a pen / How many lives must we spend again / For the freedom of my cock and the love of my hen / Would you swap places with a man out of tune if the birds of December became the birds of June / Would you go to old places just to make them look new or bring memories with you when out of the blue."
In tribute to her son in the wake of his death, Sinead shared a link to Bob Marley's song "Ride Natty Ride," which speaks of overcoming adversity: "Natty keep on comin' through / And no matter what they say / Natty do them every day, yeah! / Natty dread rides again / Through the mystics of tomorrow / Natty dread rides again / Have no fear, have no sorrow, yeah!"
Such a tribute is unsurprising — not just because of the challenges Shane faced in his life, but because of his talent for poetry.

In early 2022, Shane O'Connor, the son of Irish musician Sinéad O'Connor, died by suicide. Distraught, Sinead O'Connor was then hospitalized after a series of distressing tweets that have since been deleted, expressing the singer's own suicidal intentions, via CNN. These are just the latest examples, among many others, of the troubled singer's tragic real-life story, including public controversy and personal struggle beginning when she was only a child and ending when she died on July 26, 2023, at the age of 56.
Born and raised in Ireland, O'Connor's music career began in the 1980s with her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra." Her most well-known work, however, came in the 1990s with "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got," featuring the smash hit single, "Nothing Compares 2 U," penned by Prince. O'Connor stayed active as a recording artist up through 2014, but she never matched the critical or commercial acclaim she once enjoyed. Her work throughout the rest of her life was eclipsed by a tumultuous private life and a contentious public image.
She was institutionalized as a teenager

Sinéad O'Connor was born in 1966 in Dublin, Ireland. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she chose to live with her father. By the age of 15, she began shoplifting and was sent to one of Ireland's so-called "Magdalene Laundries," sometimes called "Magdalene Asylums." Most often, young women were sent to these institutions because they were pregnant, or engaged in what were perceived to be some other kind of anti-social behaviors, via The Washington Post.
In many respects, Sinéad O'Connor did well in the roughly year-and-a-half she spent in one of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries, run by the Roman Catholic Church. During this time, she received her first guitar from a nun, as O'Connor herself wrote in The Washington Post. But she also witnessed many instances of abuse at the hands of priests, although how much of this behavior was targeted at O'Connor remains unclear. Nevertheless, exposing abuse in the Roman Catholic Church became one of the singer's overwhelming missions in life, a theme recurring frequently after becoming an established musician. Further solidifying her break from the church, O'Connor converted to Islam in 2018, changing her name twice in the years between then and her death, but still performed as Sinéad O'Connor, via the Irish Post.

Sinéad O'Connor may have not only witnessed child abuse in her time spent at one of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries, which purportedly included barbaric corporal punishments, psychological abuse, and sexual abuse, as the singer wrote in The Washington Post. She said she also experienced herself at the hands of her mother, who died in a car wreck when O'Connor was 19 years old, according to People Magazine.
As Sinéad O'Connor revealed to Dr. Phil in 2017, her mother, who experienced mental health and substance use disorder, abused her both physically and sexually, even forcing her to live outdoors in a shed for months at a time. O'Connor's mother, she said to Dr. Phil, "ran a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight and a smile in hurting you ... We used to be terrified." Looking back, O'Connor somehow managed to forgive her mom. "I hate not being able to take care of her, maybe give her some love back. And help her, nobody helped her," she said (via People).
She had beef with Madonna and Prince

Sinéad O'Connor was at the pinnacle of her professional career in 1992. As the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live," she set off a firestorm of controversy by tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II as a means of protest against alleged abuses within the Catholic Church. This act quickly divided her audience, putting O'Connor on trial in the court of public opinion.
One voice joining the chorus of criticism was none other than the widely popular singer Madonna, who came down on the side of the Catholic Church. "I think there is a better way to present her ideas, rather than ripping up an image that means a lot to other people," she said, via The New York Times. "If she is against the Roman Catholic Church, and she has a problem with them, I think she should talk about it."
Sinéad O'Connor also had a rocky relationship with Prince, who wrote the singer's biggest hit to date, "Nothing Compares 2 U." The two nearly came to blows early on in her career. "We didn't get on at all. In fact, we had a punch-up," she told the Irish Independent in 2014. She also called Prince "a devil worshiper" in her 2021 memoir "Rememberings," according to the Irish Post. "I believe he was involved in devil business because an old girlfriend of his told me he had the power to make s*** move around the room," she said (via Irish Post).
She lived with fibromyalgia and possibly bipolar disorder

On top of personal trauma and professional controversy, Sinéad O'Connor managed physical and mental challenges. She reportedly had bouts with fibromyalgia, causing widespread musculoskeletal pain that's sometimes a result of stress, per Mayo Clinic, as well as bipolar disorder, characterized by dramatic peaks and valleys of hypomania and depression. After briefly retiring from music, O'Connor opened up to HARP Magazine about her experience with fibromyalgia, which she called a "chronic fatigue illness that painfully affects your muscles."
"When you get something like that it's a gift, actually, because you have to reassess your life," she said (via HARP Magazine). "It's purely stress-related, so you have to get out of your life the things that are taking your energy." As far as bipolar disorder, she told Oprah Winfrey in 2007 that she was diagnosed around 2003 after a suicide attempt, according to The Toronto Star. She was later told that she may in fact not be bipolar after further mental health evaluation, as Musicoholics reports.

Over the course of her career, O'Connor put out 10 studio albums, but she never saw the same success that she did with her cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U." The Billboard Music Awards named it the No. 1 single in the world in 1990.
O'Connor's was a life of both struggle and great success, but the devastating loss of her son was something she never recovered from. Besides the crushing blow of having her 17-year-old take his own life, it happened after he escaped from a psychiatric hospital where he was on suicide watch.
In a Twitter post from July 17, just about 10 days before her death was reported, she wrote, "Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

Sinéad O'Connor, the Irish singer known for her intense and beautiful voice, her political convictions and the personal tumult that overtook her later years, has died. She was 56 years old.
O'Connor's recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U" was one of the biggest hits of the early 1990s. Her death was announced by her family. The cause and date of her death were not made public. The statement said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."
Alternative radio in the late 1980s rang with the voices of female singers who defied commercial expectations of what women should look like and how they should sound. But even in a crowd that included Tracy Chapman, Laurie Anderson and the Indigo Girls, O'Connor stood out.
The cover to her first album, released in 1987, was so striking — not just because of her beautiful face. It was her head, bald as an eaglet, and her wrists locked defensively across her heart. The album's title, The Lion and the Cobra, refers to a verse from Psalm 91 about believers, and the power and resilience of their faith. And throughout her early life, Sinéad O'Connor was resilient.
"I grew up in a severely abusive situation, my mother being the perpetrator," O'Connor told NPR in 2014. "So much of child abuse is about being voiceless, and it's a wonderfully healing thing to just make sounds."
O'Connor started making sounds in a home for juvenile delinquents, after a childhood spent getting booted out of Catholic schools and busted, repeatedly, for shoplifting. But a nun gave her a guitar and she began to sing, on the streets of Dublin and then with a popular Irish band called In Tua Nua.
O'Connor came to the attention of U2's guitarist The Edge, and she got herself signed to the Ensign/Chrysalis label. Her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, went double platinum in 1990, partly because of a hit love song written by Prince: "Nothing Compares 2 U."
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got was
a distillation of O'Connor's prayerful sense of music and her fury over
social injustice. She rejected its four Grammy nominations as being too
commercial — and, in her words, "for destroying the human race." She
was banned from a New Jersey arena when she refused to sing "The
Star-Spangled Banner," for its lyrics glorifying bombs bursting in air.
Rock critic Bill Wyman says O'Connor belonged to a proud Irish tradition of speaking up against the established order. "You know she's always on the side of the victims, and the vulnerable, and the weak," he observes.
In 1992, at the height of her fame, Sinéad O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live. In her performance, she raised her voice against racism and child abuse. There was dead silence when she ended the song, a version of Bob Marley's "War," by ripping up a picture of then-Pope John Paul II.
What followed in the media was a collective howl of outrage. It drowned out a prescient protest against abuse in the Catholic church. Years later, in 2010, O'Connor told NPR she'd known exactly what to expect.
"It was grand, to be honest," she said. "I mean, I knew how people would react. I knew there would be trouble. I was quite prepared to accept that. To me, it was more important that I recognized what I will call the Holy Spirit."
Rock music's Joan of Arc, as she began to be called, became increasingly erratic in her convictions. O'Connor was a feminist; then she wasn't. She supported the Irish Republican Army, until she didn't. She got ordained as a Catholic priest by a rogue sect. She converted to Islam. She went from celibacy to oversharing about her tastes in sex. She changed her name several times, calling herself Shuhada' Sadaqat after her conversion, though she continued to release music under her birth name. And her music veered unpredictably, from New Age to opera to reggae.
Even though O'Connor never produced another notable hit, tabloids kept covering her: Her four marriages, four divorces and four children; her feuds with celebrities, ranging over the years from Frank Sinatra to Miley Cyrus.
"I think people lost respect for her credibility," says Bill Wyman. "And her later records just aren't as much fun. They're poorly produced, and they're odd. They're just not as enjoyable."
In later years, O'Connor took to Facebook and Twitter to write about her struggle with mental illness. She brought up suicide — and she attempted it more than once.
If you came of age in the 1980s, one song you heard over and over from Sinéad O'Connor's first album was "Never Gets Old." If only — somehow — she could have gotten old as powerfully as her strongest songs.
After her death, the prime minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, issued a statement on social media, saying: "Really sorry to hear of the passing of Sinéad O'Connor. Her music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare. Condolences to her family, her friends and all who loved her music. Ar dheis Dé go Raibh a hAnam [may her soul rest at the right hand of God]."
