1. Balsamic vinegar
Why? - Two tablespoons of salad dressing contain approximately 150 calories. Two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar contain less than 10 calories and yet your salad will taste every bit as good.
How? - When you're not drizzling it on your salads add it to your pastas. A splash of balsamic vinegar, a little brown sugar and a pinch of salt will turn even the plainest tinned tomatoes into a mouthwatering, waistline friendly sauce that tastes great on pasta, home-made pizza, chicken, fish or pulses.
2. Tinned puy lentils
Why? - Once thought of as 'hippy' food, tinned green lentils are now all the rage. Packed full of cholesterol lowering, blood sugar balancing
fibre, these super convenient, ready in moments lentils are also a great source of six important minerals, two mood balancing B-vitamins and, as if all that wasn't enough, they are high in hunger zapping protein too - all with virtually no fat. At just 230 calories for a whole cup of cooked lentils these really do earn their 'super food' title.
How? - Lentils are the chameleon of the food world as they take on almost any flavours you care to throw at them so they taste great with everything from light, white fish through to rich and meaty beef dishes.
Use then in place of mashed potatoes, as a base for salad dishes, as a substitute for mince, add to soups, stews, and casseroles or mix with a little half fat crème fraiche, mint or flat leaf parsley and lemon juice and serve with a hot smoked fillet of salmon on top — delicious!
3. Rapeseed oil
Why? - Rapeseed oil contains the lowest saturated fat content of any oil, has 10 times more
omega 3 than olive oil and is a good source of skin enhancing, immune strengthening vitamin E. It also has a high 'smoke point' which means its nutritional value is maintained, even during cooking at high temperatures. What's more, it's produced on our own British soils. To learn more visit
Wharfe Valley Farms.
How? - Blend with tinned chick peas and tahini paste to make a super healthy and delicious hummus. Drizzle a little over salads, pasta or risottos, mix with lemon juice, garlic and balsamic to make a salad dressing and use in place of butter in mashed potato.
4. Oatbran
Why? - We all know how good
oats are for us and oat bran, in many ways is even better. That's because it is lower in calories and even higher in protein and cholesterol lowering fibre. In fact, just one 40g serving of oatbran contains 83% of the recommended daily amount (3g) of betaglucan — a soluble fibre that binds with excess cholesterol and removes it from our blood stream. This high fibre content is great for making you feel full for up to four hours after eating too.
How? - Oat bran is creamy in texture so it goes down effortlessly and makes a great thickener for soups, stews and casseroles. Add it to home made breads, muffins, biscuits and pancakes or sprinkle it on top of your usual breakfast cereal.
For a really delicious, super fast, incredibly healthy breakfast that will see off hunger pangs to lunchtime and beyond, mix equal quantities of oats and oatbran with nuts and seeds of your choice and store in an airtight container. To serve mix two tablespoons with a little fruit juice or skimmed milk and top with fresh fruits such as sliced kiwi, blueberries, strawberries or grapes.
5. Tinned wild salmon
Why? - There are so many health benefits associated with eating this fish that the question should actually be 'why not'? It reduces cholesterol, protects heart health, reduces the risk of stroke, helps prevent immune and inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and some skin conditions, minimises the risk of some mental disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and is essential in infant brain and eye development during pregnancy and nursing.
Oh, and the delicate bones that are rich in calcium and magnesium are cooked in the can (don't worry, they're so soft you won't notice them in your finished dish) making canned wild salmon one of the most calcium-rich, bone strengthening non-dairy foods you can eat. Of course, because it's wild it is relatively low risk in terms of contaminants such as mercury and pesticides.
How? - Use it as a main ingredient of fish pies, Thai fish curries, pasta dishes or chowders. Mix with some vinegar, lemon juice, horseradish sauce and plenty of black pepper for a delicious sandwich filling. Alternatively, combine the tinned salmon in a bowl with a couple of tablespoons of bread crumbs, some finely chopped spring onions or chives, deseeded, red chilies (optional) and an egg to bind it all together.
Coat in a little more egg and bread crumbs mixed with finely chopped chives and a little oil and bake in a hot oven for approximately 30 minutes turning once for a super, healthy, delicious supper.

Dr. F. Karach, M.D., presented a paper before the All-Ukrainian Association. The meeting was attended by oncologists and bacteriologists belonging to the Academy of Science of the USSR. Dr. Karach explained an unusual simple healing process using cold-pressed oils.
The results of this therapy invoked astonishment and doubt concerning the contents of his report. However, after further examining the workings of the oil pulling therapy, one has but to then test it on oneself to prove its validity and effectiveness. It is most astonishing that such results can be achieved with this absolutely harmless biological healing method. This simple method makes it possible to effectively treat the most varied diseases, in some cases enabling one to avoid surgical intervention and the taking of medications that can have harmful side effects.
The exciting factor of this oilpulling healing method is its simplicity. It consists of swishing or pulling cold-pressed oil in the mouth( Sunflower or Seasme, Pl. note you don't need to go for organic oils only, A normal refined sunflower oil bought from any supermarket proven to be effective in many people). The healing process is accomplished by the human organism on its own. ( Read more at
What is oil pulling) In this way it is possible to heal cells, tissue and all organs simultaneously, the body itself gets rid of toxic waste without disturbing the healthy microflora. Dr. Karach says human beings are living only half their life span. They could potentially live healthy to be 140 to 150 years old.
oil pulling method
In the morning, before breakfast on an empty stomach you take one tablespoon in the mouth but do not swallow it. Move Oil Slowly in the mouth as rinsing or swishing and Dr Karach puts it as ' sip, suck and pull through the teeth' for fifteen to twenty minutes. This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth , the oral cavity must be thoroughly rinsed and mouth must be washed thoroughly. Just use normal tap water and good old fingers to clean.
Clean the sink properly, you can use some antibacterial soap to clean the sink. Because the spittle contains harmful bacteria and toxic bodily waste. If one were to see one drop of this liquid magnified 600 times under a microscope, one would see microbes in their first stage of development.
It is important to understand that during the oilpulling / oilswishing process one's metabolism is intensified. This leads to improved health. One of the most striking results of this process is the fastening of loose teeth, the elimination of bleeding gums and the visible whitening of the teeth.
The oil pulling /swishing is done best before breakfast. To accelerate the healing process, it can be repeated three times a day, but always before meals on an empty stomach.

Precautions
(a) Do not swallow. The oil should be spat out. But inadvertently if you swallow there is nothing to worry. It will go out through faeces. Nothing is to be done.
(b) If you are allergic to a particular brand of oil, change the brand of oil or oil itself to different oil.
(c) Sunflower and Sesame oil have been found to be equally effective in curing diseases. Other oils were not found to be as good. Do not blame oil pulling by practicing with other oils.
Results of Oil Pulling
The result of this healing research has attracted amazement and resulted in further research. This additional research concerning Oil Therapy has now been thoroughly documented, especially with regard to physiological similarities between individuals. It is surprising that through this biological healing method a wide variety of symptoms have unquestionably disappeared without any side-effects. This simple method makes it possible completely heal such a wide variety of diseases which would normally be treated by an operation or by powerful or potent Drugs, usually with significant side-effects.
The simplicity of this healing system in which Oil is swirled backwards and forwards in the mouth, is due to the stimulating effect which it has on the body's eliminatory system.
Through this method it is possible to heal individual cells, cell conglomerates such as lymph nodes and more complex tissues such as internal organs simultaneously. This occurs because the beneficial microflora throughout the body are provided with a healthy continuum. Without this natural bodily intrusive element evinced by the microflora the usual pattern of human health tends to lean towards illness rather than wellness. Dr. Karach anticipates that regular application of this treatment by reversing this process so that wellness is the dominant state of the human body is likely to increase the average human lifespan to approximately 150 years, double the present life expectancy.
Dr. Virend Somers, is a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic,

Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally
between 6 A.M. and noon.Having one during the night, when
the heart should be most at rest, means
that something unusual happened. Somers and his colleagues
have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is
to blame.
1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day,
take it at night.
The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life";
therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the
wee hours of the morning, the
Aspirin would be strongest in your system.
2. FYI
Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest
for years, (when it gets old, it smells like vinegar).
Please read on.
Something that we can do to help ourselves - nice to know.
Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue.
They work much faster than the tablets.
Why keep Aspirin by your bedside? It's about Heart Attacks -
There are other symptoms of a heart attack, besides the
pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense
pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating;
however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.
Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.
The majority of people (about 60%) who had
a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up.
However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from
your deep sleep.
If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.
Afterwards:
- Call 911/000
- Phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by.
- Say "heart attack!"
- Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins.
- Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and

[The effect of Kislovodsk narzan mineral water on dental caries incidence and intensity and on periodontal status].
[Article in Russian]
Abstract
Effects of drinking Kislovodsk narzan water on the status of hard dental tissues and periodontium are assessed. A total of 540 residents of Kislovodsk of both sexes aged 20 to 59 were examined, 270 of these having contacts with narzan and drinking it for many years and 270 ones who had no contacts with this water and did not regularly drink it. A total of 150 intact human teeth were examined after being kept in tubes with narzan, normal saline, or 0.3 carbon dioxide for 30 days (the solutions in tubes were daily replaced). The results brought the authors to a conclusion that Kislovodsk narzan is a caries-static agent which, if indicated, may be effectively used for the treatment of periodontal inflammations.

Have we been conned about cholesterol?
by MALCOLM KENDRICK
Last updated at 19:59 24 January 2007
Conventional medical wisdom about cholesterol and the role of statins is now being challenged by a small, but growing number of health professionals. Among them is Dr Malcolm Kendrick. A GP for 25 years, he has also worked with the European Society of Cardiology, and writes for leading medical magazines: When it comes to heart disease, we have been sold a pup. A rather large pup.
Actually, it's more of a full-grown blue whale. We've all been conned.
If you've got a raised risk of heart disease, the standard medical advice is to take a cholesterol-lowering statin drug to cut your chances of having a heart attack because, as we all know, cholesterol is a killer.
Indeed, many of you already believe that you should take statins for the rest of your natural lifespan.
Nearly everybody is in agreement about the need to lower your cholesterol level. The NHS spends nearly £1 billion a year on prescriptions for statins and possibly the same amount administering the cholesterol tests, surgery visits and the rest.
But is it all worth it? According to an article being published in the medical journal The Lancet this week, the answer is probably no.
A leading researcher at Harvard Medical School has found that women don't benefit from taking statins at all, nor do men over 69 who haven't already had a heart attack.
There is a very faint benefit if you are a younger man who also hasn't had a heart attack - out of 50 men who take the drug for five years, one will benefit.
Nor is this the first study to suggest that fighting cholesterol with statins is bunk. Indeed, there are hundreds of doctors and researchers who agree that the cholesterol hypothesis itself is nonsense.
What their work shows, and what your doctor should be saying, is the following:
• A high diet, saturated or otherwise, does not affect blood cholesterol levels.
• High cholesterol levels don't cause heart disease.
• Statins do not protect against heart disease by lowering cholesterol - when they do work, they do so in another way.
• The protection provided by statins is so small as to be not worth bothering about for most people (and all women). The reality is that the benefits have been hyped beyond belief.
• Statins have many more unpleasant side effects than has been admitted, while experts in this area should be treated with healthy scepticism because they are almost universally paid large sums by statin manufacturers to sing loudly from their hymn sheet.
So how can I say saturated fat doesn't matter when everyone knows it is a killer? Could all those millions who have been putting skinless chicken and one per cent fat yoghurts into their trolleys really have been wasting their time?
The experts are so busy urging you to consume less fat and more statins that you are never warned about the contradictions and lack of evidence behind the cholesterol con.
In fact, what many major studies show is that as far as protecting your heart goes, cutting back on saturated fats makes no difference and, in fact, is more likely to do harm.
So how did fat and cholesterol get such a bad name? It all began about 100 years ago, when a researcher found feeding rabbits (vegetarians) a high cholesterol carnivore diet blocked their arteries with plaque.
But it took off in the Fifties with the Seven Countries study by Ancel Keys, which showed that the higher the saturated fat intake in a country, the higher the cholesterol levels and the higher the rate of heart disease.
The countries he chose included Italy, Greece, the USA and the Netherlands. But why these particular ones?
Recently I did my own 14 countries study using figures from the World Health Organisation, and found the opposite.
Countries with the highest saturated fat consumption ? Austria, France, Finland and Belgium ? had the lowest rate of deaths from heart disease, while those with the lowest consumption ? Georgia, Ukraine and Croatia ? had the highest mortality rate from heart disease.
Added to this, the biggest ever trial on dietary modification put 50 million people on a low saturated fat diet for 14 years.
Sausages, eggs, cheese, bacon and milk were restricted. Fruit and fish, however, were freely available. I?m talking about rationing in Britain during and after World War Two. In that time, deaths from heart disease more than doubled.
Even more damning is what happened in 1988. The Surgeon General's office in the US decided to gather all evidence linking saturated fat to heart disease, silencing any nay-sayers for ever.
Eleven years later, however, the project was killed. The letter announcing this stated that the office "did not anticipate fully the magnitude of the additional expertise and staff resources that would be needed".
After eleven years, they needed additional expertise and staff resources? What had they been doing? If they'd found a scrap of evidence, you would never have heard the last of it.
Major trials since have been no more successful. One involved nearly 30,000 middle-aged men and women in Sweden, followed for six years.
The conclusion? "Saturated fat showed no relationship with cardiovascular disease in men. Among the women, cardiovascular mortality showed a downward trend with increasing saturated fat intake." (In other words, the more saturated fat, the less chance of dying from heart disease).
Even stronger evidence of the benefits of increased fat and cholesterol in the diet comes from Japan. Between 1958 and 1999, the Japanese doubled their protein intake, ate 400 per cent more fat and their cholesterol levels went up by 20 per cent.
Did they drop like flies? No. Their stroke rate, which had been the highest in the world, was seven times lower, while deaths from heart attacks, already low, fell by 50 per cent.
It's a bit of a paradox, isn?t it? That's one of the features of the dietary hypothesis - it involves a lot of paradoxes.
The most famous is the French Paradox. They eat more saturated fat than we do in Britain; they smoke more, take less exercise, have the same cholesterol/LDL levels, they also have the same average blood pressure and the same rate of obesity.
And you know what? They have one quarter the rate of heart disease we do.
The official explanation is that the French are protected from heart disease by drinking red wine, eating lightly cooked vegetables and eating garlic.
But there is no evidence that any of these three factors are actually protective. None. By evidence, I mean a randomised, controlled clinical study.
Every time a population is found that doesn't fit the saturated fat/cholestrol hypothesis - the Masai living on blood and milk with no heart disease, the Inuit living on blubber with low heart disease - something is always found to explain it.
One research paper published more than 20 years ago found 246 factors that could protect against heart disease or promote it. By now there must be more than a thousand.
The closer you look the more you find that the cholestrol hypothesis is an amazing beast. It is in a process of constant adaptation in order to encompass all contradictory data without keeling over and expiring.
But you don't need to look at foreign countries to find paradoxes - the biggest one is right here at home. Women are about 300 per cent less likely to suffer heart disease than men, even though on average they have higher cholesterol levels.
For years there was an ad hoc hypothesis to explain this apparent contradiction - women were protected by female sex hormones.
In fact, there has never been a study showing that these hormones protect against heart disease in humans.
But by the Nineties, millions of women were being prescribed HRT to stave off heart disease.
Then came the HERS trial to test the notion. It found HRT increased the risk of heart disease.
So what to do? Put them on statins; bring their cholesterol level down ? below 5.0 mmol is the official advice.
But, as The Lancet article emphasises, women do not benefit from statins. The phrase "Statins do not save lives in women" should be hung in every doctor's surgery.
But it's not just hugely wasteful handing out statins to women and men who are never going to benefit; it also exposes them to the risk of totally unnecessary side effects.
These include muscle weakness (myopathy) and mental and neurological problems such as severe irritability and memory loss.
How common are they? Very rare, say experts, but one trial found that 90 per cent of those on statins complained of side effects, half of them serious.
Only last week, a study reported a link between low LDL cholesterol and developing Parkinson's disease.
Statins are designed to lower LDL. In the face of anticholesterol propaganda, it is easy to forget cholesterol is vital for our bodies to function.
Why do you think an egg yolk is full of cholesterol? Because it takes a lot of cholesterol to build a healthy chicken.
It also takes a hell of a lot to build and maintain a healthy human being.
In fact, cholesterol is so vital that almost all cells can manufacture cholesterol; one of the key functions of the liver is to synthesise cholesterol.
It's vital for the proper functioning of the brain and it's the building bock for most sex hormones.
So it should not be such a surprise to learn that lowering cholesterol can increase death rates.
Woman with a cholesterol level of five or even six have a lower risk of dying than those with a level below four.
The Lancet reported that statins didn't benefit anyone over 69, not even men; in fact, there's good evidence that they may hasten your death.
The Framingham study in the US found that people whose cholesterol levels fell were at a 14 per cent increased risk of death from heart disease for every 1mg/dl.
Set up in 1948, the study screened the whole population of Framingham near Boston for factors that might be involved in heart disease and then followed them to see what happened to them.
It is still going today, making it the longest running and most often quoted study in heart-disease research.
A massive long-term study that looked specifically at cholesterol levels and mortality in older people in Honolulu, published in The Lancet, found that having low cholesterol concentration for a long time increases the risk of death.
This may be because cholesterol is needed to fight off infections or there may be other reasons ? but many other studies have found exactly the same thing.
Low cholesterol levels greatly increase your risk of dying younger. So the cholesterol hypothesis looks something like this:
There is no evidence that saturated fat is bad - and there are lots of 'paradoxes' where countries with a high cholesterol intake don't have a higher death rate from heart disease.
But there is an even more fundamental problem. The theory claims fat and cholesterol do things in the body that just don't make sense.
To begin with, saturated fat and cholesterol are talked of as if they are strongly connected. A low-fat diet lowers cholesterol; a high-fat diet raises it.
What is never explained is how this works. This isn't surprising because saturated fat doesn't raise cholesterol. There is no biochemical connection between the two substances, which may explain all those negative findings.
It's true that foods containing cholesterol also tend to contain saturated fats because both usually come from animals.
It's also true that neither dissolve in water, so in order to travel along the bloodstream they have to be transported in a type of molecule known as a lipoprotein - such as LDLs (low-density lipoproteins) and HDLs (high-density lipoproteins).
But being travelling companions is as close as fats and cholesterol get. Once in the body, most fat from our diet is transported to the fat cells in a lipoprotein called a chylomicron.
Meanwhile, cholesterol is produced in the liver by way of an incredibly complicated 13-step process; the one that statins interfere with.
No biochemist has been able to explain to me why eating saturated fat should have any impact on this cholesterol production line in the liver.
On the other hand, the liver does make fat - lots of it. All the excess carbohydrate that we eat is turned first into glucose and then into fat in the liver.
And what sort of fat does the liver make? Saturated fat; obviously the body doesn't regard it as harmful at all.
Recently, attention has been shifting from the dangers of saturated fat and LDL "bad" cholesterol to the benefits of HDL "good" cholesterol, and new drugs that are going to boost it.
But the idea that more HDLs are going to fight off heart disease is built on equally shaky foundations.
These lipoproteins seem to be cholesterol "scavengers", sucking up the cholesterol that is released when a cell dies and then passing it on to other lipoproteins, which return it to the liver.
Interestingly, the "bad" LDL lipoproteins are involved in the relay. The idea seems to be that HDLs can also get the cholesterol out of the plaques that are blocking arteries.
However, there is a huge difference between absorbing free-floating cholesterol and sucking it out of an atherosclerotic plaque which is covered by an impermeable cap.

The trouble with Monsanto and GMOs — Dr. David Suzuki spells it out
From Jeremy Bloom on the Red Green and Blue blog:
Well-known geneticist and science broadcaster Dr. David Suzuki. Photo via Red Green and Blue blog.
I’ve been asked why we’re writing so much about Monsanto and genetically modified food. “It’s been tested,” they say. “It’s safe,” they say. “There’s nothing to fear. Why are you spreading disinformation?”
I’m not a geneticist. If I say “We don’t know enough about this,” I’m just one guy. So I’ll let a geneticist answer those questions.
David Suzuki is a geneticist. He’s one of the top scientists in Canada, his textbook is one of the most widely-used in the world, he’s published more than 30 books. As head of the David Suzuki Foundation, he’s both a promoter of science and a popularizer.
So when David Suzuki speaks, I listen (see the end of this article for a list of sources). And David Suzuki says,
“Because we aren’t
certain about the effects of GMOs, we must consider one of the guiding
principles in science, the precautionary principle. Under this
principle, if a policy or action could harm human health or the
environment, we must not proceed until we know for sure what the
impact will be. And it is up to those proposing the action or policy
to prove that it is not harmful.”
It’s complicated
One plus one equals two. That’s simple. But one gene inserted into a complex chromosome may not work in a simple, linear fashion.
Transgenic crops are not
simple products like widgets, ipods or even automobiles. They are
living organisms that can interact with other creatures in the
environment in myriad ways. Nature is complicated. When you modify an
organism at a genetic level, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the
results are also complicated, and often unexpected.
…Science does not proceed in a linear
fashion the way we write up our grant applications, you
know—experiment A leads to experiment B to C to a cure for cancer. So
all of the supposed benefits of our manipulations are purely
speculative. We don’t know how it will all turn out. And then when we
create new organisms, new products, and release them in the wild, in
our food, in our drugs, we simply don’t know enough to anticipate what
the consequences will be.
We don’t know…
The bottom line with GMO is very simple: We simply don’t have the science lined up to make any sort of blanket reassurances that GMO is really safe. Here’s Suzuki:
I’m a geneticist. What
bothers me is we have governments that are supposed to be looking out
for our health, for the safety of our environment, and they’re acting
like cheerleaders for this technology, which… is in its infancy and we
have no idea what the technology is going to do.
…At the cutting edge of scientific
research, most of our ideas are far from the mark – wrong, in need of
revision, or irrelevant. That’s not a derogation of science; it’s the
way science advances. We take a set of observations or data, set up a
hypothesis that makes sense of them, and then we test the hypothesis.
The new insights and techniques we gain from this process are
interpreted tentatively and liable to change, so any rush to apply
them strikes me as downright dangerous.
…Because they won’t tell us
Not only have there not been enough studies done… when studies ARE performed, outside researchers often have to pry the data out of Monsanto via Freedom of Information filings and lawsuits. That’s a big concern concern as well.
Transgenic crops are, in
many ways, radically new and should be subject to the greatest of
scientific scrutiny, not suppressed by proprietary concerns.
So what is the rush to apply ideas that will prove to be irrelevant or wrong? Money, of course.
Unintended consequences
The history of science is the history of the unexpected.
…History informs us that
though we love technology, there are always costs, and since our
knowledge of how nature works is so limited, we can’t anticipate how
those costs will manifest. We only have to reflect on DDT, nuclear
power, and CFCs, which were hailed as wonderful creations but whose
long-term detrimental effects were only found decades after their
widespread use.
…As we learned from experience with
DDT, nuclear power and CFCs, we only discover the costs of new
technologies after they are extensively used. We should apply the
Precautionary Principle with any new technology, asking whether it is
needed and then demanding proof that it is not harmful. Nowhere is
this more important than in biotechnology because it enables us to
tamper with the very blueprint of life.
Putting genes back in bottles
How do you clean up a potential GMO mess? You don’t.
The difference with GM
food is that once the genie is out of the bottle, it will be difficult
or impossible to stuff it back. If we stop using DDT and CFCs, nature
may be able to undo most of the damage – even nuclear waste decays
over time. But GM plants are living organisms. Once these new life
forms have become established in our surroundings, they can replicate,
change, and spread; there may be no turning back. Many ecologists are
concerned about what this means to the balance of life on Earth that
has evolved over millions of years through the natural reproduction of
species.
Natural Alternatives to Blood-Thinning Drugs
January 4, 2013
By Nick Tate
Blood-thinning drugs, like the anticoagulants used to treat Hillary Clinton, are a medicinal cash cow for the pharmaceutical industry. A new one was just approved by federal regulators – Eliquis, made by Bristol-Myers Squibb – and it is expected to be a money-making blockbuster.
Doctors note powerful clot-busting medicines can have unpleasant, dangerous, and even life-threatening side effects – ranging from weakness and abdominal discomfort to abnormal bleeding. However, a variety of safe and natural alternatives are available for individuals who aren’t in immediate danger of a stroke or heart attack from clotting.
Fish oil, garlic, vitamin E, and nattokinase – an enzyme extracted and purified from natto, a Japanese soybean dish – have all been shown to help thin the blood to varying degrees, without negative side effects associated with drugs like Coumadin (warfarin) and Plavix (clopidogrel). Simply keeping active and hydrated can reduce the risk of blood clots, says David Brownstein, M.D., a board-certified family physician and one of the nation’s foremost practitioners of holistic medicine.
Unfortunately, notes Dr. Brownstein, natural alternatives aren’t for everybody. What’s more, there isn’t a way to track their effectiveness in the same way doctors can now monitor the actions of anti-clotting drugs through routine blood tests.
“There are natural alternatives to blood-thinning drugs out there,” says Dr. Brownstein, a Newsmax contributor and editor of Dr. David Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter. “The problem is we don’t have a monitor. With Coumadin, you can do a blood test and can tell if your blood is thin or not. With the natural stuff, we can’t tell that.”
For this reason, Dr. Brownstein recommends people who are at serious risk of having a blood clot “break off and go to the brain or heart or lungs” take a prescription medicine like Coumadin “until the crisis has passed, to prevent clotting.”
But for people who aren’t facing an acute health crisis, natural alternatives offer a healthy option.
“The best thing you can do is keep hydrated, that’s number one,” he says. “And then the best natural substance I’ve seen to decrease blood clotting is nattokinase.”
Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., with the Heart MD Institute in Manchester, Conn., agrees that patients on Coumadin shouldn’t quit taking the drug without consulting their physician. Coumadin is recommended for people who have enlarged heart chambers; valves that do not function properly; a history of heart attack or embolic stroke; prosthetic or mechanical heart valves or pacemakers; or a condition known as atrial fibrillation (but not “lone AF”), he notes.
“A lot of people want to get off Coumadin, but can’t do it because it would be dangerous for them to do so,” explains Dr. Sinatra, a board-certified cardiologist, nutrition specialist, and author of “The Great Cholesterol Myth,” and more than a dozen other books. “You always have to talk it over with your doctor; we don’t want [higher-risk] people to get off Coumadin.”
But for individuals who want to reduce their risk of blood clots, natural alternatives — taken under a physician’s supervision — are an excellent choice and don’t carry the negative side effects of drugs, or require the inconvenience and discomfort associated with having blood drawn every four to six weeks to monitor an anticoagulant’s action.
Among the most popular and effective alternatives to prescription clot-busting drugs are:
• Nattokinase — Nn enzyme derived from natto, a traditional Japanese soybean dish, is available in supplement form to help thin the blood. It works by boosting the actions of plasmin, an enzyme that breaks down fibrin, a protein involved in the clotting of blood. Recommended dosage: 100 mg daily.
• Fish Oil — Contains omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA, that make platelet cells in blood less prone to clotting. They also lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of arteries becoming clogged. Cod liver oil and fatty fish — such as salmon, herring, mackerel, albacore tuna, and anchovies — are good sources of omega-3s. They are also found in flaxseed oil, walnuts, canola oil, and pumpkin seeds and in supplement form. Dosage: 2-3 grams daily.
• Garlic — Contains a variety of compounds that prevent platelet cells from clotting, as do onions, jicama, pomegranate juice, olive oil, and alcohol. Garlic can enhance the flavor of many foods; it can also be taken in capsule form. “Garlic is a terrific blood thinner,” says Dr. Sinatra. “I’ve heard from people who’ve cut themselves shaving and then bleeding [excessively].” Dosage: 1-2 grams daily.
• Vitamin E — It's fat-soluble and not only considered a safe, natural mild blood thinner, but is also a powerful antioxidant that protects artery walls from damage caused by free radicals that can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Good sources of vitamin E include nuts, vegetable oils, chickpeas, lentils, oats, tomatoes, spinach, and broccoli. It is also available as a supplement. Dosage (as mixed tocopherols): 200-300 IU daily.
Some experts recommend aspirin as an anti-platelet agent with significant anti-clotting properties that is often taken to help manage cardiovascular disease. Salicylates — aspirin-like substances that have the ability to block vitamin K absorption, which is essential to blood-clotting processes — have also been shown to have clot-busting effects. Foods that are high in salicylates include many spices such as curry, cayenne pepper, ginger, paprika, cinnamon, turmeric (curcumin), licorice, and peppermint. Fruits high in salicylates include raisins, prunes, cherries, cranberries, blueberries, and strawberries.
Magnesium supplements can also prevent blood platelets from becoming too sticky and causing clots.
Taking any these substances in conjunction with anticoagulant drugs can be dangerous and cause too much blood-thinning activity or bleeding.
Dr. Brownstein and Dr. Sinatra say they have not yet prescribed the latest clot-busting drug, Eliquis, because it was only recently approved by the FDA. The medication has been highly anticipated by cardiologists and is believed to carry fewer side effects than Coumadin and requires less monitoring. The drug, also known as apixaban, is the third new anti-clotting medicine to be approved in recent years — after Pradaxa.
Cardiologists expect Eliquis will likely be aggressively promoted as a better alternative to older clot-busters like Coumadin.

15 Amazing Benefits of Ghee
get healthy living updates
Modern science now verifies what Ayurvedic health science has said for thousands of years: Ghee has a host of health and cooking benefits and is good for the mind and spirit.
I consider ghee — a form of clarified butter — an essential powerfood!
Great For Cooking and Taste
1. Ghee has a high smoke point (250 °C 482 °F).
You can cook and fry with ghee and it will not break down into free radicals like many other oils.
2. Ghee does not spoil easily so does not need refrigeration.
Some ghee mixtures last up to 100 years.
3. Buttery taste without causing dairy allergies.
Ghee is made from butter but the milk solids and impurities have been removed so most people who are lactose or casein intolerant have no issue with ghee.
Ghee has a nutty buttery taste without disturbing dairy sensitivities.
High Nutrition:
4. Ghee is rich in the oil soluble vitamins, A D and E.
5. Ghee is rich in K2 and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) – an antioxidant with anti-viral properties if it is sourced from grass fed cows.
Energy and Weight Management
Ghee is converted directly into energy like carbohydrates.
6. Ghee is Nutritionally Rich Like Coconut Oil
Ghee is rich in medium chain fatty acids which are absorbed directly to the liver (like carbs) and burnt as energy. Athletes can use ghee as a consistent energy source.
7. Weight Loss
The energy from these medium chain fatty acids can be used to burn other fats in the system and lose weight.
Digestion and Immune Strengthening
Ghee (unlike other oils) is rich in butyric acid, a short chain fatty acid. Beneficial intestinal bacteria convert fiber into butyric acid and then use that for energy and intestinal wall support. A healthy body therefore makes it own form of ‘ghee’ but you can aid that greatly by just consuming it.
Eating ghee is like eating probiotics and prebiotics and fiber combined.
8. Healthy Digestive Tract
Research shows that people with unhealthy digestive tracts do not produce butyric acid.
9. Healthy Immune System
Research shows that adequate production of butyric acid supports the production of killer T cells in the gut, and thus a strong immune system.
10. Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Cancer
- Researchers are using oral butyrate supplements and butyrate enemas to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis.
- Ayurvedic physicians have been using ghee enemas for centuries to decrease inflammation.
11. Strong Appetite
Ghee stimulates the secretion of gastric acid, thus aiding in the digestive process. Better digestion equals better health and weight loss.
Mind and Spirit
- Ghee can help cleanse negative emotions from the body and feed the positive.
12. Molecules of Emotion
Modern research is now revealing that negative emotions have a chemical nature. This is what ancient cultures have always maintained, that the mind and body are one. These chemicals are attracted to and stored in fat.
Ghee can be used to replace those fats. Plus, if used properly in a cleanse, can attract and pull out these emotional toxins so they can be cleansed from the body.
13. Positive Food
Within Ayurveda, ghee is considered one of the most satvic foods. Satvic foods promote positivity, growth and expansion of consciousness.
14. Holy Cow
The positive subtle effects of ghee is said to come from the fact that it comes freely from cows. Cows are special or holy because they receive and store thousands of spiritual energies from the environment. The milk from cows therefore contains the essence of all those energies and ghee is the essence of the milk.
Herbal Energizer

15. Fry Your Spices in Ghee
Many of the medicinal properties of herbs and spices can be absorbed and transported to targeted areas of the body with ghee.
This is why Ayurveda uses ghee in thousands of different herbal preparation.
You can do the same thing by frying your kitchen spices in ghee before adding to your dishes.
Making and Storing Ghee
Ghee is made the same as clarified butter but heated longer. Learn how to: Make Ghee
The two things that will degrade ghee are water and sunlight.
- Always store your ghee in a container with a good seal in the dark.
- This is why it is best not to store ghee in the refrigerator if you are using it often. When you open it up to the warm air, water will condense on the ghee and cause oxidation.
- Ghee will last 2-3 months if you keep it in an airtight container.
- When kept in a refrigerator, without opening, ghee can last up to a year.
Don’t Be Scared of Ghee
Ghee was once thought to be unhealthy because it is saturated, but research has now revealed the truth about fats and oils. Ghee is one of the seven healthy fats YOU NEED in your kitchen.

5 Recipes For Garlic Lovers
get healthy living updates
April 19th is National Garlic Day! If you’re a garlic lover, celebrate it with one of my five favorite garlic recipes.
Garlic is both a food and a medicine in many cultures, and has been for centuries. People have been enjoying garlic’s medicinal properties dating as far back as the building of the Giza pyramids. I consider it a PowerFood.
All my recipes are vegan and healthy. They are made with fresh whole foods and healthy oils.
“No cook who has attained mastery over her craft ever apologizes for the presence of garlic in her productions.” Ruth Gottfried, ‘The Questing Cook’ (1927)
1. Simple Garlic Zucchini
The first time I saw this recipe being prepared was on the Yaku Yama mountain in the ’70s (my hippy days). I watched with amazement while my friend David added clove after clove of garlic; I am sure he put in more then I have listed below! In those days the idea was to eat lots of garlic for all of its health benefits.
Ingredients:
2 large zucchinis
10 cloves of garlic Almond oil
Sea salt
Directions:
- Grate 2 large zucchinis.
- Chop 10 cloves of garlic*.
- Sauté zucchini and garlic in almond oil till soft for 5 minutes.
- Add salt to taste.
- Serve.
Arthur Baer says: “There is no such thing as a little garlic.”
But if the amount above is too much, then add the amount to suit your taste.
Nothing tastes better than sauteed onions and garlic!
2. Garlic Onion Gravy.
Ingredients:
2 medium onions (yellow ones are best), peeled and thinly sliced into rounds
2 – 8 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
2 – 4 tablespoons Almond Oil or Clarified butter (ghee)
1/2 tsp marjoram
1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp balsamic vinegar
4 tsp arrowroot
2 – 3 tsp Tamari or 1 – 2 tsp Spike seasoning
1 1/2 c water
Black pepper
Directions:
1. Sauté onion in oil in a frying pan, on medium high heat until rich golden brown.
2. Add garlic and sauté on medium low heat for 2 minutes.
3. Now, add marjoram, thyme and balsamic vinegar.
4. Add 1 cup of water to the onion mixture, stir and simmer for a few minutes on low heat.
5. Mix arrowroot into 1/2 cup water.
6. Stir the arrowroot mixture into the onion mixture.
7. Turn heat up to medium and continue to stir while the mixture boils for a few minutes. It will become translucent with a creamy consistency of gravy.
8. You can add more water to create the desired consistency.
9. Add tamari and pepper to taste.
Yummy stew with garlic and many hardy vegetables.
“No one is indifferent to garlic. People either love it or hate it, and most good cooks seem to belong in the first group.” – Faye Levy
3. Spring Cleanse Vegetable Stew
This is an easy and delicious simple meal to make and you don’t have to wait until vegetarians come to dinner to make a vegetable stew. I recommend it in my seasonal detoxes.
Ingredients:
1 bunch Broccoli
1 cup Cauliflower
1 cup shredded Cabbage
1 large Onion
3 pieces Kale or 2 cups Spinach
1/2 pound Asparagus
3 – 7 cloves garlic, sliced
2 Tbsp Coconut oil
1 tsp Basil
1 tsp Marjoram
2 Tbsp Braggs or 2 tsp Vegetable salt
Black Pepper to taste
2 cups Water
2 Tbsp Tahini
1/2 lemon, juiced
Directions:
1. Remove skins from onions, chop fine.
2. Sauté onion and garlic in coconut oil till golden brown.
3. Put the onions and garlic in a large sauce pan with the water.
4. Add basil, marjoram, pepper and Braggs.
5. Cook for 10 minutes; this is to make flavorful stock.
6. Chop rest of vegetables into 2 inch pieces.
7. Place all vegetables except asparagus and kale into a saucepan.
8. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes till almost tender, stir occasionally.
9. Then add asparagus and kale and cook 5 – 10 minutes till tender (Don’t overcook the vegetables till they’re mushy; it will taste better if there is a slight crunch to the vegetables.)
10. Mix lemon juice and tahini with a little water.
11. Mix in tahini/lemon juice mixture with vegetables and serve.
“The best thing to do with garlic of course, is to eat it.” – Sylvia Rubin
4. Vegan Pesto
I love this vegan pesto; it tastes like the real thing to me only better! Toss with pasta or serve with bread or crackers for an appetizer.
Ingredients:
1 cup olive oil
3 cups fresh basil
1 2/3 + 1/3 c for later cup pine nuts
1 – 5 cloves garlic
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1/4 -3/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt or 3 tsp Braggs
Directions:
1. Put olive oil first into the blender; then add basil blend until smooth.
2. Next add pine nuts and garlic; blend till they are ground.
3. Now add Braggs or sea salt and nutritional yeast; blend till smooth.
4. Pesto is best to not be completely smooth; a little texture is good.
5. Add 1/3 cup pine nuts and mix in at the end
Adjust amounts to your own taste. You can use other herbs besides basil; cilantro, parsley and mint are good too. Substituted walnuts or almonds in place of the pine nuts, as pine nuts can be expensive. Instead of salt put in a dash of Dr. Bronner’s liquid aminos.
Pesto keeps very well; it is delicious the next day and it freezes well, too.
Dip without all the chemicals and preservatives.
5. Butter Bean Dip
This is a very tasty and healthy dip. Also, very easy to make.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter beans (cooked)
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp Lemon Juice
1/2 onion, finely chopped
2 – 4 cloves of garlic to taste
A few sprigs of fresh parsley, chopped
Olives & watercress or parsley for garnish
Directions:
1. Mash butter beans until smooth and creamy.*
2. Add rest of ingredients.
3. Mix together until well-blended.
4. Adjust seasoning to taste (salt, Lemon juice, olive oil, garlic).
5. Put into a decorative bowl and garnish with olives & watercress.
6. Serve with corn chips or whole meal crackers.
* you could use a blender, when I developed this recipe I did not have one by choice!
My Garlic Story:
We ate lots of garlic in our house. My father would grow it and put garlic into everything. He would make garlic sandwiches which we all loved to eat. Toast with butter and chopped garlic and a sprinkle of salt mmmm it was yummy. There were 3 girls in our family and my father used to love to tell us that the garlic would grow hair on our chests!
Remember that garlic is GOOD FOR YOU! You can read about the health benefits of garlic or listen to a garlic lover and a garlic hater discus the relative merits of garlic in this youtube video.

I URGE ALL MY FRIENDS TO READ & SHARE THIS; YOU COULD SAVE A LOVED ONE'S LIFE BY KNOWING THIS SIMPLE INFORMATION!!!
Stroke has a new indicator! They say if you forward this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along? Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue:
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this.
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
>>RECOGNIZING A STROKE<<
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. Chicken Soup)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is
'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
I have done my part. Will you?

EXTRACT FROM A CURRENT DRAFT - FRIDAY 28 JANUARY 2022
ReplyDelete"In some ways I did continue my highly educated father’s mission, but unfortunately I had to start from scratch in many ways, and it took me a lifetime until it was too late to be made fully conscious that I needed first and foremost to protect myself before I got involved into protecting my loved ones and others. Seeing and convinced of my obvious incompetence, my loved ones turned away from me while under the spell of the evil ones who I wrongly trusted with our domestic affairs. Instead of working for our welfare, they set out to destroy our home because they had no concept of TRUE LOVE, the type that lasts a lifetime, and of honesty, and gratitude.
