Note d’avril 2012

Cet entretien date de 1999. Je viens de prendre connaissance treize ans plus tard de sa transcription. Si j’avais aujourd’hui à répondre aux questions qui m’étaient alors posées, je me montrerais moins indulgent pour les Américains. Quant aux juifs, plus que les individualités ou même le groupe, ce sont les organisations qui prétendent les représenter que je mettrais surtout en cause. Enfin, pour ce qui est de Hitler, on ne cesse de le juger par rapport aux juifs, ce qui, déjà en soi, est absurde. Le Führer, le Guide de l’Allemagne, a eu bien d’autres préoccupations que « la question juive », surtout à l’heure où il lui a fallu combattre sur quatre fronts : ceux du gigantesque combat à mener sur terre, sur mer, dans le ciel et celui de la lutte désespérée pour la survie de son peuple en train de brûler vif sous les bombes au phosphore. Pour lui, il l’a expressément fait savoir, c’est à l’après-guerre qu’il convenait de remettre la recherche d’« une solution finale territoriale de la question juive ».

 

Après 1814-1815 la propagande des vainqueurs sur le compte de « l’Ogre » avait fait de Napoléon Bonaparte une incarnation du Mal mais le temps avait assez vite ramené les esprits à une juste « révision » de ces absurdités. Après 1944-1945, la propagande des vainqueurs sur le compte d’Adolf Hitler a fait de ce dernier une incarnation du « Mal absolu » (sic) ; la loi nous oblige à y croire et le tam-tam médiatique nous le répète à la folie mais aujourd’hui enfin, d’une part, les historiens et, d’autre part, l’apparition d’Internet permettent d’espérer que le sens commun va enfin permettre une juste « révision » de l’histoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La vraie figure de Hitler ainsi que les vraies figures de Churchill, de Roosevelt et de Staline commenceront alors à prendre forme. Et cette guerre mondiale apparaîtra pour ce qu’elle a été : une boucherie au terme de laquelle les vainqueurs apparaîtront surtout comme de bons bouchers et les vaincus comme de moins bons bouchers. Et, bien sûr, il restera toujours assez de bellicistes pour prêcher de nouvelles croisades « au nom de l’amour de l’humanité » ou, en d’autres termes, des guerres perpétuelles « pour une paix perpétuelle ».

 Pour répondre à la question sur Adolf Hitler, je dirai qu’il a été essentiellement le Napoléon Bonaparte des Allemands. Les deux personnages ont été, l’un et l’autre, des hommes politiques d’une exceptionnelle envergure, de prodigieux chefs de guerre, des dictateurs, des sauveurs, puis des naufrageurs de leurs patries respectives. Dans le cas de Hitler, ce que la propagande juive nous en raconte avec tant d’insistance relève largement du mythe. L’histoire est une chose, les histoires en sont une autre. L’historien se doit de rechercher l’exactitude et de s’en contenter.
