il importe pour les premiers d’étudier les antécédents, et pour les
seconds de chercher à connaitre les mobiles qui les font agir. »
C’est ainsi que commence l’ouvrage de Gaston Wiet dont nous allons parler. Cette citation est pleine de bon sens, n’importe qui ayant deux sous de jugeote l’accordera. Pourquoi présenter ce livre? Tout est dit dans la citation introductive. Parce qu’on entend trop de bêtises innommables sur l’Islam (la religion) et sur l’Islam (le peuple et la terre). Parce que trop de gens parlent sans savoir, jugent sans connaitre, regardent mais ne voient pas, écoutent mais n’entendent pas. Parce qu’aujourd’hui et depuis quelques années, l’Islam est présenté comme l’ennemi de l’Occident capitaliste sans raison valable, si ce n’est la propagande américano-israélienne. Pourquoi l’Islam est-il l’ennemi de l’Occident ? Parce que ce dernier refuse d’admettre que l’Islam est foi et loi, qu’il est utilisé comme rempart à l’impérialisme libéral-libertaire, parce que son modèle économique méprise l’usure et la recherche de profit, antithèse de notre système.
Ce livre, qui n’est pas une thèse
islamophile à outrance, mais un ensemble de textes, expliqués,
contextualisés, permettant à chacun d’y voir un peu plus clair sur cette
question de l’Islam, sans pour autant trouver toutes les réponses. En
espérant que cela incitera chacun à aller chercher plus d’informations
ailleurs et de son propre chef.
Dieu a doté tous les hommes (ou presque) de l’intelligence, il serait péché de ne s’en servir point.
Dans un climat actuel de tensions et
d’inquiétude, où les factieux désignent trop vite le coupable idéal pour
faire taire toute force de débat ou de critique et cacher ainsi les
vraies causes des événements, le citoyen se doit de s’informer et de ne
pas se laisser berner par l’émotion. Parce que nous ne devons pas
laisser journalistes et politiques penser à notre place, éteignons nos
télévisions, et lisons.

Gaston Wiet (1889-1971) est un
orientaliste français, diplômé de l’Ecole des langues orientales et
licencié en droit. Il enseigna le turc et l’arabe comme maître de
conférence à Lyon, puis comme professeur au Caire. En 1914, il est
mobilisé et décoré de la médaille d’or serbe pour la bravoure. Il
reprend ensuite ses activités d’enseignement à Lyon, puis à Paris, avant
d’être nommé directeur d’un musée d’art arabe au Caire de 1926 à 1951,
dont il écrit une grande partie du catalogue. De retour en France, il
est nommé professeur de langue et littérature arabes au Collège de
France, et est élu en 1957 à l’Académie des inscriptions et
belles-lettres. Il a rédigé de nombreux ouvrages et a également traduit
et annoté les écrits d’un grand nombre d’auteurs arabes, aussi bien
anciens que contemporains.
L’ouvrage
Grandeur de l’Islam est écrit en
1961. Son but : raconter, par le commentaire de textes de tous genres
—chroniques, poèmes, textes scientifiques — l’épopée de l’Islam, de
Mahomet à l’Empire ottoman en passant par le khalifat Abbasside, le
sultanat mamelouk, et bien d’autres encore, ou comment l’islam, par le
biais de tribus nomades du désert d’Arabie, a conquit, en mille ans, la
moitié du monde en passant par la Palestine, la Perse, l’Egypte, le
Maghreb, l’Espagne, les Balkans, jusqu’aux confins de l’Inde.
L’objectif de l’auteur, par le
commentaire de nombreuses sources littéraires, magnifiques, veut
démontrer que si l’islam est un, l’Islam lui est une mosaïque de peuples
différents priant le même Dieu tout-puissant dans la même direction, et
que donc un Perse ou un Turc n’est pas un Egyptien, ni un
Arabe. L’islam, c’est une tentative d’harmoniser la foi et l’amour de
Dieu avec la métaphysique grecque, la raison, la science.
L’ouvrage de Wiet a aussi un grand
intérêt historique : contrairement à l’idée que le Moyen Age fut marqué
par l’affrontement manichéen de deux forces antithétiques, à savoir
l’Europe chrétienne et l’Orient musulman, Gaston Wiet nous démontre bien
le contraire. Les rapports furent conflictuels certes, mais parfois
cordiaux, voire amicaux. Charlemagne ne recevait-il pas des ambassades
d’Orient chargées de présents pour le plus grand des princes d’Occident ?
Nous invitons vraiment chacun à lire cet
ouvrage, magnifiquement bien écrit et relativement court (519 pages)
qui vous fera voyager à travers les siècles et le monde, en plus de vous
offrir un regard neuf sur une question toujours brûlante aujourd’hui.
