This was mentioned /quoted in “Islam in theory and practice” 1967 by Maryam Jameelah (Margaret Marcus, a Jewish revert to Islam).

We are friends of Suliman Gani, a British citizen, Muslim community organiser and human rights campaigner, and in recent weeks we have watched his good name being dragged through the dirt by the Conservative Party's efforts to inflict damage on Labour's Mayoral campaign. First Zac Goldsmith called him "one of the most repellent figures in this country", which deeply shocked and distressed us, then, at Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron called him a supporter of Islamic State (IS), which is completely untrue. In fact this poster shows he was on a panel speaking about the 'evils' of ISIS earlier this year. A piece of evidence the PM chooses to ignore.
Some parts of the media have criticised Zac Goldsmiths’s campaign as racist, but there has been no apology from him or from the Prime Minister to Suliman, the real victim of this smear campaign. It is a very serious thing to call a Muslim an extremist and terrorist sympathiser in today's world and it appalls us that they have used the reputation of our gentle friend Suliman as collateral damage in their dirty campaigning, without caring that there is not a a single shred of proof to back their assertion. We worry that without an apology and a full retraction from the Prime Minister, he and his family are put at great risk. On 20th April, during Prime Minister’s Question Time, David Cameron made a damaging and unfounded allegation about Suliman Gani, a British citizen, a teacher and broadcaster, and the former imam of Tooting Islamic Centre, which we call on him to retract.
Seeking to undermine Labour's Mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan, he said that Khan had shared platforms with extremists, and proceeded to name Suliman Gani, describing him as a supporter of Islamic State (IS). Nothing could be further from the truth. Suliman Gani is a man of peace and a campaigner for human rights who has spoken out publicly against the evils of IS and has regularly engaged in events designed to bring different faiths together.

This personal, disgraceful attack on a well-known and widely respected figure in the Muslim community was made using parliamentary privilege and if expressed outside Parliament would be regarded as defamatory and libellous. 

 It has caused great distress to Suliman Gani and his family, as well as the many members of the Muslim community and other communities who know him. The Prime Minister must follow the code of conduct for all government ministers, including himself, which he updated last October. Paragraph 1.2.c states: “It is of paramount importance that ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament, correcting any inadvertent error at the earliest opportunity. Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will be expected to offer their resignation.” 
 The Prime Minister must retract his words and issue a full and unreserved apology in the House of Commons at the earliest opportunity.

David Cameron keeps accusing this British citizen of supporting ISIS - but did he?

David Cameron today stood by his claim that a British citizen was a supporter of Islamic State, despite providing no evidence













David Cameron has been accused of misleading MPs, breaking the ministerial code and smearing a British Muslim by accusing him of supporting Islamic State.
The Prime Minister accused Imam Suliman Gani of being a supporter of Islamic State during PMQs last month.
He used the claim to launch a crude and blistering attack on Sadiq Khan , whom he said "shared a platform with him" on nine occasions.
The accusation has prompted life-long Tory columnist Peter Oborne to write a furious open letter to Mr Cameron, calling on him to withdraw the claim and apologise to Mr Gani.
But does Suliman Gani actually support Islamic State? And what evidence has David Cameron got to prove it?
Here's what you need to know.

What did David Cameron say?


He said: “Suliman Gani - the honourable member for Tooting has appeared on a platform with him 9 times. This man supports IS.

Did anyone else pile in?

Yes. Zac Goldsmith piled in.
Here's what he had to say: "To share a platform nine times with Suliman Gani, one of the most repellent figures in this country, you don’t do it by accident."
This was shortly before it emerged that Mr Gani had been invited by the Conservative Party to an event at which Mr Goldsmith spoke.
And that he'd posed for a photo with him.

Is David Cameron sticking by his accusation?

Yes. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister told the Mirror today: "The Prime Minister stands by the comments he made about Suliman Gani in the House on 20 April."

When does he say Mr Gani supported IS?

According to Number 10, Mr Gani called for an Islamic State at an event in Bradford on November 13th, 2015, the night of the Paris terror attacks.

Is that true?

No. He didn't speak at an event in Bradford on November 13th, 2015.














He did speak at an event in Bedford that night. But, as far as we can tell, he didn't call for an Islamic State. He did say this though:
"We respect, tolerate, live in a society which is multicultural, but wherever we are living - it does not matter in which part of the world - the role model will always remain the Prophet Mohammed."

You can check for yourself. The whole event is on YouTube, here . We've listened to every statement he made in the Q&A session available from the event, and can't find anything that could be construed as a call for an Islamic State.
We've asked Number 10 for a specific quote, but they had not responded at the time of publication.

How's it gone down?

Not well at all.
Mr Gani released a statement which said:
"For the avoidance of any doubt, I state again that Islamic State is in no way compatible with my beliefs. I condemn IS wholeheartedly, and have done so repeatedly in public and in private since its inception.
"This allegation that has been made about me is a smear on my good name. It is highly distressing to me, my family, and to those who know me."
He called for Mr Cameron to withdraw the remarks and apologise.

And life-long Tory columnist Peter Oborne yesterday wrote an open letter to David Cameron , accusing him of misleading MPs over Mr Gani's support for IS.
In the letter, published on the Middle East Eye website , he wrote:
"To sum up, the prime minister has made a very serious charge against a British citizen – namely that that he supports IS, the most notorious terror group in the world.
"Neither he nor his spokespeople ...have been able to provide a scintilla of evidence to support this claim. Since he is unable to provide the evidence, I believe the prime minister must urgently withdraw his false and profoundly damaging assertion about Mr Gani."
He goes on to note that the Ministerial Code requires ministers who inadvertently mislead the house to correct the record as soon as possible.
(Could I remind you of paragraph 1.2.c of the Ministerial Code. It states that: “It is of paramount importance that ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament, correcting any inadvertent error at the earliest opportunity. Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will be expected to offer their resignation.” The prime minister will be familiar with the contents of the Ministerial Code, since he wrote a foreword to it.
It is essential that the prime minister acts as quickly as possible. As you yourself seem to imply by directing me to the prime minister’s political office, he made this allegation against Mr Gani as a partisan ploy designed to gain votes for the Tory candidate Zac Goldsmith in the London elections. It would be utterly discreditable – indeed damnable - if the prime minister’s slur against Mr Gani were to remain on the record. )?

His letter concludes: "It would be utterly discreditable – indeed damnable - if the prime minister’s slur against Mr Gani were to remain on the record. He must either substantiate it, which I am certain he cannot do - or withdraw it, with a full apology"

    David Cameron is planning a crackdown on free speech that could silence dissent

    David Cameron’s new crackdown, reportedly to be announced in the Queen’s speech, will see people silenced and free speech curtailed. According to Politics Home, the legislation will “include measures to gag individuals, close down premises and ban organisations”. Also, programmes perceived to contain “unacceptable extremist material” will be shut down by the UK’s broadcasting watchdog Ofcom, under the Extremism Bill.
    Couple this with the government’s definition of ‘domestic extremist’ and the censorship could apply to literally anyone. According to the National Domestic Extremism and Disorder Intelligence Unit (NDEDIU):
    Domestic Extremism relates to the activity of groups or individuals who commit or plan serious criminal activity motivated by a political or ideological viewpoint.
    Sounds reputable until you discover the government has redefined ‘serious criminal activity’ to suit its agenda:
    That the conduct involves the use of violence, results in substantial financial gain or is conduct by a large number of persons in pursuit of a common purpose.
    The last part reads “a large number of persons in pursuit of a common purpose”. Combine that with “motivated by a political or ideological viewpoint” and you still couldn’t get much more vague. A student union fits that description. The Conservative party fits that description. Sunday mass fits that description. But importantly for the government, a demonstration against fracking, austerity or anything you can think of, fits that description.
    Accordingly, the government’s domestic extremism unit is currently spying on the Green Party, environmental activists and children.

    So it would be naive to think that, after abusing surveillance laws to spy on political opponents, the Conservatives wouldn’t use ‘hate speech’ laws to censor them. The ‘extremist’ label is already in place.

    Does censorship even effectively counter violent extremism?
    Perhaps it’s better if we open up the debate and publicly challenge extremists rather than silencing them. Censorship closes off debate, removing genuine terrorists from scrutiny and enabling them to paint themselves as gagged victims – freedom fighters silenced by the crusading West.
    Moreover, legislating as if we cannot regulate each other for extremist views shows a paternalistic mistrust of the public. If extremist views are aired in public they can be condemned, but in the shadows they can incubate.
    The Times claimed that this ‘anti-extremist’ policy is for David Cameron’s ‘legacy programme’. So we are now safe in the knowledge that the Prime Minister is undertaking a vanity project while presiding over an unprecedented housing crisis, crippled public services and the demolition of the welfare state.
    And it’s a vanity project that could double up as a way to silence criticism and opposition to his own government and allies like the State of Israel. For instance, the military wing of Hamas is a registered terrorist group in the UK (and several other countries) despite there being no Palestinian army. And despite the context of an illegal Israeli apartheid state, the daily segregation and subjugation of Palestinians, Israeli state control of imports and exports, and the land, air and sea blockade of Gaza. One man’s extremist is another man’s freedom fighter.
    To summarise, an ‘extremist’ is pretty much anyone the government wants it to be. To prevent people from publishing their thoughts is in itself an extremist attack on civil liberties.

    This is very troubling indeed. On the night of the Paris attacks Mr Gani was in Bedford where he attended a public meeting called "Quiz-a-Muslim". There is a recording of this meeting on YouTube. I have studied it. At the meeting Mr Gani said nothing which could be construed as expressing support for IS.
    Why did the Downing Street spokesman draw attention to the fact that Mr Gani’s Bedford meeting took place on the night of Paris attacks? This is a disgraceful reference because it can only have been made in order to suggest a connection between the Bedford event and the tragedy in Paris - when no such connection has ever been made and none to my knowledge exists.
